Hello all
I have a marriage certificate for Joseph Worthington and Emmie Holland in the County of Lancaster in June 1937 , It says his Fathers name is also Joseph Worthington . Can anyone suggest how I can trace back the correct male line as I have no other information on the family .
Thanks in advance

What was his father's occupation?
The first step is to search for Joseph and Emmie on the 1939 register, which provides their birth dates. I'm not sure how much information I am allowed to give you for copyright reasons, but I think it would be okay to say that Joseph was born on the 23rd February 1901.
Queenie :)
EDIT: The 1 in 1901 is a little smudged.
SECOND EDIT: As others have established, it was a 7.

I wonder if it is 1907?

Thanks for your reply , I am not sure what the fathers profession is, as its really difficult to read on the certificate

A couple of possible births for 1901
WORTHINGTON, JOSEPH ELLERTON
GRO Reference: 1901 M Quarter in WOLSTANTON Volume 06B Page 131
WORTHINGTON, JOSEPH SMITH
GRO Reference: 1901 M Quarter in MANCHESTER Volume 08D Page 216
The only birth that could fit for 1907 is this one:-
WORTHINGTON, JOSEPH CHARLES SYKES
GRO Reference: 1907 M Quarter in CHESTERFIELD Volume 07B Page 775
I'm more inclined to think it is one of the 1901 ones.

Can you post a snippet of the occupation so we can have a look for you?

There are only two 1901 census records and of those two the one living in Wortley is the more likely. Joseph Jnr has a birth year of 1901 and the other has a birth year of 1900.
Joseph Snr, Wortley, has an occupation of labourer at steel rolling mill.

There is this death:
Emmie Worthington b 9th September 1911 - died Claro, North Yorkshire 1996
There is also a death - Joseph Worthington b abt 1907, died Claro 1966
-
That 1966 death has a probate record and the linked person is Emmie Worthington.
I wonder if 1907 is the correct year of birth. If so it will be the Joseph Charles one mmn Sykes.

1911 has a Joseph Worthington b 1907 Manchester - parents Joseph & Ann Jane

Agree with Carole re the 1911 as a good possibility. Suggest you look for a Joseph Worthyton in the 1921 census to find this family and look at his occupation.

His father was Joseph, his mother was Ann Jane Harrison.
He was baptised on 20th March 1907 in Manchester, with his birth date given as 23rd Feb 1907. Anc* has mis-transcribed his surname as 'Warthington.'
