Title: Location of a Baptist Chapel in the district of Rochdale
Post by: MarMnkly on Tuesday 12 September 23 15:26 BST (UK)
Please can you help?
I have a marriage certificate (1847) for John Brearley and Mary Butterworth. They give their residence at the time of marriage as Millers (or Millen) Street, Haywood and Hooley Bridge near Heywood.
The certificate says,  The Baptist Chapel, and what could then read, Holt St, but the writing is unclear.
Does anyone have any local knowledge
Many thanks
Mar

Don't suppose they are at the same address on the 1851 census?

If so you could look on the census for a Holt St - or even better post a snippet showing the wording to see if anyone can confirm it for you.

Thanks Millipede
They are living in York Street in 1851 with the first of their children (Ephratah)
I've taken a snippet, as suggested, and have attached.
Many thanks

Have found a Holt St in 1881

Use Alice Sharratt born 1847 Rochdale to find the page.  Somewhat later than 1847 but it might help with the area.

Here is some information but can’t see West Street/Holt Street mentioned for a chapel
https://www.heywoodhistory.com/2017/01/churches17.html

You can see the chapel here on a map - close to Miller Street and York Street
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01sno/
West Street us also close - to the left of Queen Street

Does the certificate definitely say the chapel is in Heywood?
Is there a minister’s name?

My ancestors were involved with two Baptist chapel in Rochdale - West Street and Newbold Chapels, West Street having been established in 1833, and Newbold in 1887.  Both were originally sited in different parts of the town meeting in rooms before the buildings were erected.  There is also a Heywood Baptist Church https://www.heywoodbaptist.org.uk/home.  I can't see from their website when this chapel was established.
West Street chapel and its history are described fully in this article/book https://baptisthistory.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/WESTBOOK.pdf

Re the question "Is there a Minister's name" on the marriage certificate, I believe the Rev W F Burchell was the minister at West Street in '47?

The map shows West street Chapel as a large building, indeed it was so when my brother and I attended Sunday School there in the 1940s, but when I last visited Rochdale about 10 years ago I found that that building was a Chinese warehouse and the chapel was a small modern building next door.  The same sort of thing had happened to Newbold Baptist Church, too.

My grandfather was organist and choirmaster at West Street in the early 1900s.

Should have done this earlier  ::)

The marriage took place in Rochdale so you are both right, I would think with West Street, Rochdale.

My Heywood relatives’ marriages were registered in Bury.

Thankyou everyone for all of your help and advice.
Sorry I have only just been able to reply.
The officiating minister reads Peter Provit/Procet/Procit (not the easiest to read)

On your snippet, after the Chapel address it says ‘in …’
What does it say after that?

1851 2213/392/33

Shows that John was b Crompton and Mary b Rochdale so it would be likely they married in Rochdale.
