Title: Meifod Main Independent Chapel Records?
Post by: AlexNoodle on Tuesday 29 August 23 13:56 BST (UK)
Hi All

I was wondering if anyone has a copy of the Montgomeryshire Genealogical Society's publication of Main Independent Chapel : Register of baptisms, 1821-1837? According to their website the booklet is out of stock. I have a transcription of the baptism/birth of Mary Taylor there on 11 Nov 1826 daughter of an Edward Jones Taylor. The actual parish register images are not available online and I live down in Wiltshire. I don't know if the booklet has any other information to expand upon the transcription. If anyone has it I would really appreciate a look up to check if possible.

I know that Mary went on to marry John Brown at Penrhos Chapel on 8 Mar 1850 and gives her father's name as Edward Taylor and that he was a Labourer. She died 7 Jan 1851 in Shrewsbury. Just having trouble finding out further details about her line as the baptism doesn't seem to give a mother's name and not finding any definitive details for Edward in the surrounding area. It is possible that Mary was working at the Britannia Inn in Pool in 1841 - there is also a John Taylor aged 60 who is a Nail Maker living in Pool in 1841 too so I don't know if there is any connection. There is also a Robert Gibbons Taylor aged 30 living at Main, Meifod in 1841 but he is not born in the county and his occupation is down as "Ind". I don't think there is any connection there as he comes from a pretty wealthy family.

Also to note I am not sure whether this 1826 entry is "my" Mary as I am also aware of a baptism in Llanymynech in 1820 for a Mary Taylor daughter of Edward and Jane - and given Mary's age on her death certificate and burial is 30 which puts her year of birth around 1821 - this Llanymynech baptism may be the correct one but I haven't also found anything for either Mary to rule either of those entries out so hoping the Meifod details might help shed some light!

Also if anyone can suggest who might hold the actual parish register as doesn't look like the Montgomeryshire Archives do - is it with the National Archives/Library of Wales? I don't seem to have much luck in locating where it is stored to go about seeing if someone can check the actual register for me.

Thanks in advance!

Alex

Hi,
I have a copy of Parish of Meifod Main Independant Chapel, Baptisms but the surname Taylor does not appear in any of the listings by: Childs surname, Mother's maiden name or Fathers surname. I've looked at dates of all Mary Jones baptisms but none match.
Regards,
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan

Thank you for looking for me. I think that actually the entry is from the Meifod Main Congregational Chapel rather than the one the booklet is for as I think there are two, one being Meifod Main Independent - Main Ganol (that the booklet is for) and the other being Meifod Main Independent (Congregational) having looked on Genuki they seem to be two different chapels.

Still not finding out much about who holds the original records. I have a transcription from FreeReg and corroborated by a transcription from the Wales, Select Births and Baptisms, 1541-1907 record set on Ancestry.

Any suggestions welcome!

There is details on FamilySearch which provide details about it from the Family Search Library - FHL British Book 942.94/M1 V3p "Parish of Meifod memorial inscriptions : Soar Independent Chapel, Congregational Chapel, Main Independent Chapel, Cwm Nant Meichiaid W.M. Chapel, Seion Welsh Presbyterian Chapel, Rock Calvinistic Methodist Chapel, Salem Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Wesleyan Methodist Chapel" located at British B2 Floor Book - essentially in Salt Lake City so not going to be going there to view that!

It is recorded on FreeReg

No other info though.

I have some North Wales non-con records on my other machine. I'll see if I can find anything and will report back later.

Sorry - I  see that you mention Freereg in your previous reply.

Hi Alex
I looked through two collections. Unfortunately the North Wales one, as I suspected, didn't include Montgomeryshire. The other one, a collection of various records by parish, surnames, etc,  included Meifod but stopped in the late 1700s. There was no separate Taylor file.

Sorry.

Thanks for looking for me I appreciate it.

It looks like there is potentially a copy of the same book referenced from the FamilySearch library at the National Library of Wales so I will submit an enquiry to them to see if they can have a look at it for me!

As an update - I got a copy of the original baptism register page from the National Library of Wales which shows that it was a baptism for a Mary Jones born on 11 Nov 1826 (although the year was initially written as 1825 but has been amended and is either a 1 or a 6) and the baptism actually took place on 11 Nov 1828 - daughter of Edward Jones. Taylor. The full stop between Jones and Taylor is there - and it might be that "Taylor" is his occupation. It isn't that clear but it is odd that none of the other entries on the page are like it, they are all quite detailed with a time of birth and both parents names and a place of birth etc. but not this entry.

I think that with it looking more like Jones and not Taylor as the surname that this has helped me to rule out this as being "my" Mary Taylor!
