Hi folks
Looking for information about Archibald Miller my great-grandfather who lived in Rumbling Sikes Craigneuk circa 1865 and Garibaldi Square Craigneuk circa 1900
1. Any information, old photographs of him and his family
2. Any information, old photographs of housing in Rumbling Sikes and Garibaldi Square
3. Siblings or offspring of Archibald Miller. I have some information about my grandfather David Miller and his brother Archibald Miller who emigrated to Canada then settled in the USA
Thanks folks

Hi DM

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

You haven't mentioned wives' names or birth years which would help.

Was it David, son of Archibald Miller and Isabella Paterson, who was born in Rumbling Sikes in 1868?

DAVID PATTERSON MILLER
Mother's maiden name PATERSON
1868
639 / 366
Dalziel

Archibald Miller and Isabella Paterson married on 13 April 1866 in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire.

Some children showing for them on the birth indexes on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk include:

James - 16 Oct 1866 in Dalziel
David - as above, on 19 Oct 1868
Isabella Paterson - 16 Oct 1870 in Dalziel...that is 2 births every 2 years born in mid October!
Archibald - 24 June 1873 in Dalziel

There will be more likely.

Not sure if you have a subscription to Ancestry? There is a family tree owner who has a photo of Archibald and wife Isabella. See www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/187657269/person/252455662207/facts

1881 census for the family:

Archibald Millar 43 Head coal miner b. Rutherglen, Lanarkshire
Isabella Millar 36 b. Glasgow
James Millar 15 coal miner
David Millar 12
Isabella Millar 10
Archibald Millar 7
Matthew Millar 3

Address Craigneuk 7 Sunnyside Row, Dalziel

The family show as living at 15 Merrys Square Dalziel in 1871.

DM, who did David Millar marry? Was it Mary Liddell?

There are the following children showing for them:

Archibald (Thomson) Miller

Christina Liddell Miller...married in Ontario, Canada in 1929

David Paterson Miller

Isabella Paterson Miller...married in Ontario, Canada in 1926. See www.findagrave.com/memorial/233773737/isabella-p-harnett

Jeanie Liddell Hutton Miller...married in Ontario, Canada in 1929

Margaret Lees Miller...twice married in Scotland. Died in PA, USA in a hotel fire in 1923. See www.findagrave.com/memorial/52826632/margaret-winnie

Mary Liddell Miller - married and remained in Scotland

Who was your grandfather, David b. 1868 (Archibald & Isabella) or his son David b. 1903 (David & Mary)?

This looks a possibility for the death of David b. 1868:

DAVID MILLER
Age 75
1943
Ref 639 / 618
Dalziel

And wife Mary:

MARY LIDDELL or MILLER
Age 74
1947
Ref 606 / 102
Monkton and Prestwick, Ayrshire

Is this the family in 1901?

David Miller 32 Head coal hewer b. Dalziel
Mary Miller 27 b. Bothwell
Margaret Miller 4
Archibald Miller 3
Isabella Miller 5 months

Address 33 Garibaldi Sqr, Dalziel

So, from all of this so far:

Your grandfather - David b. 1903
Your great grandfather - David b. 1868
Your g great grandfather - Archilbald born in the 1840s.

Is this family the right family for you, DM? You said in your post that your Grandfather David Miller migrated to Canada and then made his life in the US?

The David Paterson Miller born 1903 and the whole line up from there to Archibald. This David died in an Edinburgh hospital, Scotland in 1960. See clip below from his death reg:

James Millar married Helen Thomson 10 Feb 1828 Old Monkland.

Apart from your Archibald, there is birth record for a son named Matthew born 16 July 1841 Rutherglen.
Matthew married Janet Robertson in 1867. He was also a miner.

This leads to find the Miller family in the 1851 census (father James is dead)

A question for when you log back on. Did your grandfather die in the US? Just concerned that we have a death for David b. 1903 in Scotland really...

Cambusnethan cemetery Wishaw, burial records.

JANET PATERSON, housewife, Rumblingsykes, aged 47 years, married.
Parents - Alexander Gillies and Isabella Tedford.
Interred in common ground on 16th December 1868.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rumblingsykes was the old name for Craigneuk, the name fell into disuse about the turn of the 19th century.
Janet was buried in common ground, which meant she was given a pauper's funeral, so there wouldn't have been a headstone or grave marker of any kind.
I couldn't find any other interments for a combination of "Paterson & Gillies" in Cambusnethan burial records.
I have never seen any photographs of Rumblingsykes or Garibaldi Square, the latter was slum housing of the worst sort, it was demolished many years ago.

Since I first asked if anybody could help me with my Craigneuk Miller family information the response has been great. Some of the detailed information provided makes me think that some others in the wider Miller family has been compiling their own family tree. I would love to make contact with them to exchange family information. Be great if you get in touch DM
PS. Monica's input has been very helpful

Below is a list of eight interments in the Dalziel Parish cemetery in Motherwell, usually called the Globe cemetery. All 8 are interred in public ground, sometimes called common ground. In other words, they had a pauper's burial. Some had the AR spelling of Millar, while some had the ER spelling, I have transcribed them all here as MILLAR, for consistency. All dates are of interment, you can probably knock off 2 days to get the exact date of death.
They may help fill in some blanks in your family tree.

MATTHEW THOMSON MILLAR. 15 Cowie's Square. Aged 9 months.
Parents - Archibald Millar & Isabella Paterson.
28th December 1876.

JOHN MILLAR. Craigneuk. Aged 8 months.
Parents - Archibald Millar & Isabella Paterson.
24th November 1880.

WILLIAM PATERSON MILLAR. Craigneuk. Aged 8 months.
Parents - Archibald Millar & Isabella Paterson.
26th March 1887.

STILLBORN CHILD MILLAR. 201 Windmillhill Street. (Motherwell).
Parents - John Millar & Isabella Gardner.
27th March 1890.

ALEXANDER MILLAR. Craigneuk. Aged 1 year.
Parents - Archibald Millar & Isabella Paterson.
2nd December 1891.

ARCHIBALD MILLAR, miner. 216 Craigneuk. Aged 63 years. Married.
Parents - James Millar & Ellen Thomson.
25th December 1897.

ALLAN MILLAR. 9 McDonald's Land, Craigneuk. Aged 1 year.
Parents - James Millar & Isabella B. Gardner.
16th October 1900.

MATTHEW THOMSON MILLAR. Burnside's Land, Craigneuk. Aged 13 months.
Parents - James Millar & Isabella Gardner.
19th August 1902.

A "Land" here in Scotland referred to a "land of houses", usually but not always, a tenement building (of various sizes). Mostly they were named after the proprieter, in this case - McDonald and Burnside.

Further research of my Miller family has led me to Baillieston previously in Old Monklands parish. I found a Lees family connection address given c.1850 as Lawson Land Baillieston.
So far I have been unable to locate Lawson Land (or Row) amid hundreds of pit rows houses that are shown in Baillieston maps between 1850 to 1900.
Has anyone any information or suggestions on how I can find this information?
PS. Although I was born and brought up in Motherwell, by pure coincidence, I now live in Garrowhill which caused a lot of Old Baillieston to disappear when it was built.

Can you find them in the 1851 census on FreeCEN www.freecen.org.uk? Once you have found them, you can click on the next or previous household and build up a list of the neighbouring addresses which may help to home in on the one you are looking for.

Hello DM,

I am a descendant of the Archibalds. I don’t have a ton of info but I have names from my lines if you’d like them.

I am planning a trip in August to Scotland and am trying to research any sites with family significance that may be worth visiting.
