Title: Fold3
Post by: liznjohn2011 on Tuesday 15 August 23 12:44 BST (UK)
Hi all,

I have had a stumbling block for years but have came across an entry on Fold3 of a William Trainer, 96 Foot
On trial in Berhampore (India?) 8th Sept 1869.

Is there anyway I can find out more about this William? Service records, joining?  Anything else?

If this is my William, i found a grave saying he died India 28 Oct 1875.

Desperately hoping this will be the right ancestor but how can I confirm?

Any help is much appreciated ty

There is a find a grave entry for one who died 28 Sep 1875.

It says born 1843 Berwick upon Tweed.

Parents James Nelson Trainer & Eleanor.

Died India but buried Berwick upon Tweed - note saying "cenotaph only not interred here"

Does this sound like your man?

The 96th were in India from 1865 to 1875, so it's possible he was tried there. And possibly died there. However it appears that no service records for him have survived. In April 1869 the 96th were stationed in Bengal and Berhampore is in Bengal.

The grave inscription definitely says 28 October 1875. Not buried there but commemorated there.

Six years ago I raised the possibility that William was using his mother's maiden name Hope. There was a William Hope who died in India on 28 October 1875.

Iv just had another look at that threat ShaunJ, I forgot about it. Where did you see the info about William Hope being a driver?
Think I looked at prices for the service records from Scotland and it seemed extortionate as I don't know what I'm doing for ordering those, iv not bought any before

William Hope's burial record shows that he was 26 years old, a driver in the Royal Horse Artillery, and he died from TB on 28 October 1875.

As he died in service, his army records will have been destroyed.

and possibly some children:(EDIT - one born 1877 so that must be another William Hope)
