Title: Bergin / Brophy - Kilkenny pre 1830
Post by: Jack2023a on Wednesday 09 August 23 03:37 BST (UK)

James Bergin (m) Mary Brophy - about 1805??
One known son John Bergin 1809 - who married Alice Byrne (date unknown) assuming in the county of Kilkenny - as their first child Bridget was born 1835, Gowran.

I cannot locate anything about John's siblings - or his parents.   I have seen somewhere that James (the father) was born in Gowran, Kilkenny 1782, although not sure if this is correct - as I cannot locate any records, perhaps none exist.

The line from John and Bridget (Byrne) Bergin - family down, is pretty much ok, but it is the line going the other way, that is difficult to trace.

Any help re: this topic would be most appreciated.     Jak

As more general research advice, it can be helpful to look at the sponsors at Catholic baptisms, as they were often relatives of the parents. If not a sibling, a sponsor could be a sister or brother-in-law of one of the parents, sometimes even a cousin.

I recommend going through the baptisms of John and Alice's children and looking at the sponsors.

The NLI website is a useful tool; here is the page for Gowran:

The baptisms show other family names as Queenie suggests and the residence shown looks like ‘Coolgreney’ or similar.
The only place I can see which is similar is Coolcreany in Tiscoffin civil parish.https://www.townlands.ie/kilkenny/gowran/tiscoffin/tiscoffin/coolcreany/

However, Griffiths Valuation shows a John Bergin in Coolgreany in Tiscoffin civil parish.

So hopefully both the same place.
