Title: I’m looking for some grave look ups. The cemetery is the Old Carmel Chapel Cem
Post by: Bidr on Friday 04 August 23 17:14 BST (UK)
I’m looking for some grave look ups. The cemetery is the Old Carmel Chapel Cemetery also known as Hen Garmel Cemetery, Llangiwg, Neath Port Talbot, Wales.

I have checked the Glamorgan burial index 1839-1990 and they are not on there.  The documents and burial information I was told they were archived at the Swansea library… I emailed the library and they are saying they are not archived there. They referred me to this site https://www.peoplescollection.wales/story/886976 , but nothing.

If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated!

All four were buried in the Old Carmel Chapel Cemetery.

When John Thomas Vickers was born on 3 December 1884 in Langley Green, Worcestershire.  He married Martha Jane Davies on 4 August 1907. They had seven children in 17 years. He died on 31 January 1962 at the age of 77, and was buried in Old Carmel Chapel Cemetery Llangiwg, Glamorgan.

When Martha Jane Davies was born on 23 October 1890 in Glamorgan.  She married John Thomas Vickers on 4 August 1907. They had seven children in 17 years. She died in 1966 in Llangyfelach, Glamorgan, at the age of 76, and was buried in Old Carmel Chapel Cemetery Llangiwg, Glamorgan.

David Davies was born in 1854 in Llangyfelach, Glamorgan. He married Mary Williams in 1877. They had 12 children in 26 years. He died around 1936 in Pontardawe, Glamorgan, at the age of 82.

Mary Williams was born in 1856 in Lampeter, Cardiganshire. She married David Davies in January 1877 in Pontardawe, Glamorgan. They had 12 children in 26 years. She died around 1934 in Pontardawe, Glamorgan, at the age of 78.

If there are no headstones & in particular plot numbers - how is anybody going to determine which grave/graves your ancestors are buried in?

What documentary evidence do you have that confirms all 4 were buried at Old Carmel?  From the way your post is worded it looks as though it’s been copied from a Family Tree?  If so - is it your own tree or somebody elses?

This has been copied from my own tree saved me time typing it out, not that fast with the keys!  A reliable family member has told me they are all buried there.

'What documentary evidence do you have that confirms all 4 were buried at Old Carmel? '

This is why I am asking for help because I can't track down where the documents are held.

This states records are at West Glamorgan Archive Service. There would be a charge if staff look up records.

I have emailed them and I'll see what they come back with.  Made a phone call to an elder in Pontardawe yesterday (the only one left) He told me most of the family are buried there, a gem  ;)

A bit confused..  I went to Carmel Capel to see if I could see any gravestones. It is in Gwaun Cae Gurwen about 6 miles from Pontardawe and  is now private dwellings opposite Gron Road GCG. Spoke to resident who claimed that there never was a graveyard at this chapel. I checked with another local who also said that there was never a graveyard here. I have seen the link which shows details of gravestones so do not understand. Google maps shows buildings at the rear and a large space for cars.
Not far from here is Tairgwaith which has a Brook Terrace but as far as I can see there is no Brook Terrace in Pontardawe

The old Chapel is up on the hillside above the villages of Gwaun Cae Gurwen and Cwmgors. The Chapel was destroyed in an arson attack some years ago. The graveyard remains. You visited the 'new' Chapel which was built last century in the middle of Gwaun Cae Gurwen. This never had a graveyard and has recently been converted into a dwelling.

William T Vickers
Birth Registration    Q3  1918
Pontardawe  Volume 11a, p 1869
Mother's Maiden Name    Davies

Suggests he's the son of John and Martha Jane (nee Davies)

David John is also a son of theirs - with them in 1911
