Title: Will of Edward Cowper of Slinfold 1674
Post by: MattD30 on Sunday 30 July 23 22:08 BST (UK)
I am hoping someone here can help me with this part of the 1674 will of Edward Cowper of Slinfold.

I can read most of the will and almost all the names and relationships stated but there are some parts where I am not 100% certain my reading is correct.

In the attached example I would be grateful if someone could confirm what it says between "I give unto her All those my...." [see line 2] and the word "stationer".

In particular I am keen to establish the following

1] the word before "messuages" in the first part of the extract

2] the name of the Alley mention as been near the Great north door. I think it is either Common or Cannon

3] lastly the word written in the last line after where it says "by the name of the..."

Many thank for any help

Matt

To my reading the name of the alley is Cannon.

1) Fower Messuages (= four)

2) I agree with Cannon

3) by the name of the Starre (probably an inn/tavern?)

A huge thank you to shanreagh and Bookbox

So it looks like my original reading of "Cannon" was right, I read it twice then doubted myself lol!

I did wonder if "Fower" was "four" but couldn't quite make out the writing. So a big thank you to Bookbox

Oh so it says by "the name of the Starr" well that makes more sense. I did wonder if it was possibly an Inn or some specific place. Thank you again.

This will is quite long [about 5 pages I think] and typically there are sections slap bang in the middle which I am either having no luck with at all, or which [like this bit] contain phrases or words here and there I am  not convinced I have transcribed correctly lol!

I will post a few more sections here and see if anyone can help explain what's going on.

Many thanks
Matthew

Hi Zacktyr

Sorry for the late reply here, I have been distracted this month by reading a few IPMs and recently came across what looks like a dispute between one member of the Cowper family and the Crown regarding inheritance after an IPM. I was at Chichester last week and I now have a rather large legal document to look through lol. Thankfully it is quite clear and easy to raed.

Any help you can give here would be useful. If you send me a pm with your email and can send the section directly to you. Or do you want me to send you the full will?

let me know what's best.

Matt
