Title: Uckfield Workhouse 1924
Post by: Chetnole on Friday 09 September 05 10:53 BST (UK)
I have a Katherine or Catherine Francis in Uckfield Workhouse giving birth to a son Robert William Francis in 1924, I need to find out if she had her son Ronald with her who would have been 2 years old.
This is a real mystery for us as she was born and lived in East Stour Dorset and we have no idea why she moved to Uckfield, please could someone let me know how to find records for the workhouse, many thanks,

Anne-Marie

Hi there Ann-Marie

If records survive for the workhouse in Uckfield they should be at the East Sussex Record Office in the Maltings, Lewes.

A search of the A2A library website brought just 1 hit for Uckfield Workhouse, but that was to do with erecting a fence around it.

Try contacting Lewes to see what they have got

East Sussex Record Office,
The Maltings,
Castle Precincts,
Lewes.

Tel: (01273) 482359 Fax: (01273) 482341

or

East Sussex Record Office "Handlist of Registers"

http://www.eastsussexcc.gov.uk/leisureandtourism/localandfamilyhistory/familyhistory/familyhistorydocs.htm

I know they have the following for Uckfield Workhouse
Births 1905 - 1931
Baptism 1902 - 1928
Deaths 1905 - 1976

Hello,

I'm planning my first trip to Lewes this week. One of the things I want to research is my Gt Gran's death in Uckfield Workhouse.  If I find a record of her death am I likely to find any more information?

Many thanks

Brig

Brig and Anne-Marie you both need to ask if the Record Office has the Board of Guardians Minute Books for the time period that your relative would have been an inmate.

These can give a wealth of information or next to nothing but well worth looking at.
