Title: Henry Threlfall 1826-? Born Halsall, Lancashire - A seaman?
Post by: Chris Pyne on Thursday 27 July 23 20:38 BST (UK)
What is the phrase underneath his "Cancelled" membership as a Merchant seaman.
I am thinking one of the words is "lost" which has bad connotations for any future records?

thanks
Chris

Hi,

The last word looks like "Samaritan" to me. Maybe a ship's name?

Edit: I found this:

A quick Google suggests that “Samaritan” was lost in 1846 on Bedruthan  steps, sailing from Liverpool.

 Thanks Karen and Mazi,

I think that is a good end story from a tragedy. The beachcombers took the cargo and the ship's figurehead became a local landmark and it was eventually replaced.

There is more research to do - my person and the seaman have a different birthday, by 2 days, probably not significant but there is another Henry Threlfall event in the future, a local marriage, so was he one of the 2 survivors and made his way home or is that a cousin?

Just thinking out loud....
Is that a T in front of "lost with Samaritan"?  As in Ticket?
I am wondering if it is, they are cancelling his Ticket number, as his actual ticket was lost in the sea.
The reports in the newspapers say the ship was lost on 22 Oct, 1846, and the 27 Oct, 1846 papers were already saying that apprentice Henry Threlfell and one other survived.  That's a pretty short timeline to say he was lost.
Of course, he may never have gotten a new ticket..... I sure as heck wouldn't have put a foot on a ship again after that!

Yes, it is Ticket lost, as bbart says.

Thanks Bookbox!

I just found the record for John Cass, which was the other sailor that survived.  It has the same note as Henry's did.

Can you point me in the direction of local newspapers, reporting on the wreck and that Henry was a survivor?

That will link into the story that he did make it back to Halsall for a local marriage and family.

Hopefully this link works; it is from FindmyPast but it states "free to view"

Column 5, lower third for mention of Henry.  The Samaritan appears in two sections of the article, with the survivors named in the second entry.

Let me know if it doesn't work for you!

Well, this thread is becoming really interesting!  :)

In Hanes' link Henry is named as Thrappall, but I would like to think that is just an error on the part of the newspaper.

I was confused about the letter in front of "lost" - I thought it was an "I" to begin with, which obviously makes no sense  ;D - so I am very glad that this little matter has been cleared up. (Thanks bbart and Bookbox!)

What a dramatic story!

Thanks bbart. That link works.

I am a member of Findmypast. I must make more use of their newspapers. I did look up his father Thomas Threlfall. In 1851 he was accused of the murder of Henry's mother, 19 years after she was found floating in the Leeds Liverpool canal in Halsall. There was a deathbed witness to the alleged murder but Thomas was acquitted.  I was just following up on Henry's future life when I came across the link to becoming a Merchant Seaman. Now I have two stories, a murder, and a shipwreck !

My comment about it being a dramatic story was a bit premature!  ;D
