My Grandfather was born in the Malkins Bank area of, I believe, Sandbach. He was Thomas Wainwright born Circa 1897 died in a coalpit accident Newcastle staffs 1952.
any one have any information on Wainwright's in this area on a census or other record?
-
Hi
His birth is registered in 1896 in the Congleton registration district which would be right for Sandbach, see the http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/cheshirebmd/index.html
I cannot find him in the 1901 census, do you have his fathers name at all ?

Thanks for that information.
No I am afraid not. I am struggling at the moment in this area.

Hi
If you do get to learn his fathers name or find the 1901 census for him please let us know, if his family come from Cheshire we should be able to get back through the census.

hi again,
I have found the family onthe 1901 census residing in the newcastle under lyme area.
G grandfather was named william wainwright (B abt 1872) and was married to Elizabeth. (B abt 1866) He was born Sandbach, and she was born Hassell Cheshire, not far from Sandbach and Malkins Bank. At this census they had 4children all born in Hassell, the youngest Frank in 1999

Slightly off topic but provides context : Malkins Bank is a ribbon settlement alongside the Trent & Mersey canal and the one road that runs through the hamlet (from Hassall Green to Sandbach). There are some old terraced houses (still standing) that were associated with workers in salt , chemical works and canal workers. Some of us oldies remember when the chemical spoil heaps caught fire. Perhaps unkindly for Malkins Bank the prevailing wind frequently blew a stink from Malkins Bank to the next hamlet (Hassall Green) and this provided many choice phrases ! However, the rivalry between hamlets was never more than occasional attempts at humour.

Thanks for the information drD. I have visited Malkins Banks but not yet played the golf couse that covers the old salt mine that my ggg grandfather worked in.

It was a lot more than a salt mine ! A toxic dump for chemical waste in later years but the reclaimation effort was well done.
Take a walk up the canal from Malkins Bank to Hassall Green, there are some great features of the canal and the field that the canal bisects.
