Title: Freebmd
Post by: Mofamily on Thursday 13 July 23 14:37 BST (UK)
Hello
In the marriages on freebmd, how can you find out which named individual married one of the number of people mentioned as possible spouses.  I've tried narrowing them down through census and death records, but can't find possible matches.

FreeBMD simply shows the names mentioned on each page;either 4 names or 6.

It requires detective work to work out who marries who!

Are there any suitable births? Check for Mother's Maiden Name on GRO Search.
Do any of the brides have unusual forenames? Try looking for them on the next census.

Either of these tricks may help you eliminate (or confirm) a bride.

Maybe tell us who you are looking at.  I would normally do as you have done and try to track them or the others mentioned later on census or birth registration indexes for any possible children.

If you have access to FS, Ancestry or FindMyPast then you may be able to sort them out by searching for one of the names and hopefully find the church marriage.  However, if the page number is high then that might signify a Register Office marriage  :-\

Maybe we can help with your particular search  :)

Thanks folk. I have tried FS, FindMyPast etc. Thought every way outside the box, but no luck.
I'm trying to find a Julia Palmer. She was a widow born 1801/2, last living in Liverpool in 1837. She had links with London so thought she might have gone back there and remarried. Possibly 1839 St George, Southwark.
Also a Jennet Palmer. Also a widow born 1795/99, last living in Liverpool 1851. She also had links with London so thought she might have gone back there and remarried. Possibly 1851 St George, Southwark.

Thanks Rosie. They obviously didn't get married as the dates of birth are way out.  It was just a thought as  I couldn't find a death for them under their married names. I've scoured the Liverpool necropolis records etc where their husbands and children were buried, but they are not there.
I suppose they could have emigrated, but I've looked and can't see any records for that either.
Never mind.
Thanks again

If I have the correct Janet/Janette/Jennet, I think I have her in 1871 with her son James on Crosby Road South. They're mistranscribed on Ancestry

James Balmer    47    Head. Piano dealer b Liverpool
Alice A Balmer   53    Wife
Janet Balmer            74    Mother b London
Elizabeth Sudlow   53    Sister (married)
Sarah Armitage   20    Servant
Sarah Wainright    31    Servant

Piece 3838, folio 82, page 51

James' marriage to Alice lists him as son of John Barton Palmer

Have checked the image - no one in the household for them to be daughter of. Presumably Janet the mother is head of the household but was away from home on census day

No - son John is also away from home on 1861, but as he's a commercial traveller that's probably unrelated to Janet being invisible that year

Hi everyone

Sorry I've been so late getting back, but I didn't realise I had any posts.  Totally missed the e-mails or OH deleted them  ::)

Anyway, thank you so much for your hard work.  That's Janet/Jannet/Jennet sorted.

Thanks again
