Title: Brick wall that can hopefully be broken - Carrick

Hi Everyone,

hoping someone may be able to help with this one. I am looking for the name of my 5x GGM.

My 5x GGF John Carrick had a printing business at 9 Bedford Row Dublin which he ran until he died in March 1778, He was succeeded by his wife until she died in 1779 and then by his sons James and John Carrick.

I feel like there must be a record somewhere that has the name of his wife as the person running the business or as the person James and John took over from, but I can't find one and not really too sure where to look.

How old was he when he died?

What year was his first child born?

This will give us an idea of a timescale for his marriage

This states her death as 1789 not 1779.

I can see a newspaper snippet - 7th January 1789 Saunders News - Letter, Dublin.
Unfortunately, she is only referred to as ‘Mrs Carrick’.

unfortunately I don't know when he was born or his sons,
I do know that John junior married Alicia Gray in 1789 she was 24 but I don't know how old he was.
James died in 1816 and John carried on with the business on his own until 1833 when his son Robert succeeded him, by this time the business had moved to Batchelor's walk. I don't know when John junior died so unsure if Robert succeeded him due to death or retirement.

I got go here https://www.jstor.org/stable/24616074 by searching for ‘Carrick, Bedford Row, 1780’
and this was mentioned in the summary - ‘ Printed by Widow Carrick and son, in Bedford Row. 1780’

Apologies that was a typo, yes it should have been 1789 that she died.

I haven't seen that newspaper snippet that you are referring to, I will try to find it - thank you.

I estimate John Carrick wed inbetween 1750 and 1770.

I typed John Carrick into FindMyPast and "Ireland" with a date range of 1740-1800 and no marriages have shown up but several mentions in the Dublin Gazette of a John Carrick, who was elected Master as he was part of the corporation of Cutlers, paper stainers and stationers in August 1775 with John Ruxton and John Collins as as wardens for the ensuing year.

I did find a John Carrick baptised in Dublin in 1741 son of Thomas and Jane. Baptised St. Catherine's, Dublin City.
