Hi, I'm hoping someone could please help me find some more information about the Mills side of the family, who suddenly half appear in Burin Bay Canada and then turn up in Hull. Currently going on a newspaper searching phase too to try find out more about the lives of my ancestors, but wouldn't know where to look for Newfoundland papers. Were there even any?
Anyhow here's some backstory.
William Mills Direct ancestor
BIRTH 1858 • Lyme Regis, Dorset, England
DEATH Jul 1906 • Sculcoates, Yorkshire East Riding, United Kingdom
He Married in 1885 to a
Emma Woundy Direct ancestor
B:02 July 1855 Burin Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
D:30 Sep 1924 Hull, Yorkshire East Riding, England
They married in Canada
They had many children, all but 2 born in Burin Bay, Newfoundland area.
CHILDREN:
Caroline L Mills
B:22nd March 1879 Burin, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
D:15 Mar 1940 Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire East Riding, England
George Lewis Mills
B:17 Apr 1879 Burin Bay, Newfoundland
D:18 Mar 1933 ???
Charles William Mills
B:abt 1883 Newfoundland
D: ?????
James Elliott Mills
B:19 Aug 1887 Burin Bay, Newfoundland
D: ?????
Jemima Elliott Mills
B:12 Sep 1889 Burin Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
D:Mar 1968 Holderness, Yorkshire East Riding, England
Thomas Mills
B:25 Apr 1893 Sculcoates, Yorkshire East Riding, United Kingdom
D:22 Feb 1947 Hull, Yorkshire East Riding, England
Wilson Mills Direct ancestor
B:12 Aug 1891 Hull, Yorkshire, England
D:13 Dec 1955 Hull, Yorkshire, England
I'm hoping someone may help me find a greater insight into their life in Canada, perhaps the year range they spent there. Occupations etc? This is the first time one of my direct ancestors was born in another country and moved here from elsewhere so im quite curious.
I'm not sure if the children are right, they're based on census records, but I also can't search Canadian records to see if they had anymore that never returned home?
Thanks
Toby

I have just realised that if the Birth and marriage records are correct, they married before their first three children were born, 1879, 1879 and 1883 and the parents married in 1885. Possibly I've got the Marriage wrong? I don't even know if I'm just chasing circles here lol. I'm hoping I haven't got this completely wrong.
I have also realised that I have listed Caroline as being born March 1879 and George April 1879, so clearly I've gone wrong somewhere, but It's simply because I have no idea about their lives here.
From census records.
William Mills was living in Dorset in 1871
If I'm right his first child was born in Canada in 1879
His last Canadian child was born in 1889
and his first Hull-born UK child was my 2nd great grandfather Wilson Mills born 1891
This puts the Mills inhabitance in Canada anywhere from abt. 1871 - 1872 to abt. 1890 - 1891.

Hi Toby_ax,
Newfoundland did not become a province of Canada until March 31, 1949.
Here's a genealogy site with a variety of information from the years before Newfoundland joined Confederation in 1949. http://ngb.chebucto.org/
You might also find some interesting historical information about Newfoundland at this website: https://www.heritage.nf.ca/articles/politics/confederation-1864-1949.php
The William Mills in the UK Census of 1871 was age 13 and is listed as an inmate. There is an image on Ancestry from 1869 showing a William Mills jailed for stealing at age 11.
In July of 1881, there is a record for a marriage of a William Mills and Emily Waite in Dorset.
Do you have the names of William's mother and father? Do you know for sure that he was in Newfoundland?

Newfoundland did not become a province of Canada until March 31, 1949.
Sorry did I post this in the wrong forum?
My Mother only knew of the Mills being from Hull, but she could only go back as far as her great grandad Wilson and didn't know anything else about the mills so it could be quite possible i'm searching a loophole. Although Wilson was 1 of 2 that were born in Hull so that makes sense as to why she only recalls Hull.
Wilson definitely had a brother Thomas, they are remarkably similar on pictures. Also listed as born in hull.
Here is the census record I have found to suggest a Newfoundland link. (1901)

Wilsons GRO index suggests a maiden name of WOUNDY.
MILLS, WILSON WOUNDY

Not sure why there are ticks next to his siblings and parents birth places?
Do you have the names of William's mother and father? Do you know for sure that he was in Newfoundland?
Williams parents were Charles Mills and Caroline Lawrence, looking at census records, they remained in Dorset and did not move with their son William. Caroline Died in 1874 in Dorset.
I've just checked and I also have Williams record of stealing on my tree. Must have forgotten, but the years range were just an estimate, so possibly later than 1871. :)
Anc family tree link, if you have access. ...............
Ah thats Odd, that tree also features Emma Woundy, and those are Williams parents. Did William move his children away from his first wife then? or did she pass away?
As I can't access these birth records I simply can't say for certainty who is who's child. :(
