Hi all,
Would anyone happen to know who the chief landowners that included Balquhidder were during the 18th and early 19th Centuries?
-
Not offhand, but try the Statistical Accounts at https://stataccscot.edina.ac.uk/static/statacc/dist/parish/Perth/Balquhidder.
Also the Valuation Rolls at https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/advanced-search/valuation-rolls#record-type

There was a historical guide to the area first published in 1978 with a third edition printed in 1985.
The book was written by the School Mistress at the local village school at Kirkton and among many other snippets of interest, the book provides information on the various estates and the changes in ownerships over the years.
Unfortunately the book has no ISBN number and may be difficult to source. Your local library may be able to help.
The Book Title is:- "The Braes o' Balquhidder An Historical Guide to the District"
The Author:- Elizabeth Beauchamp
Publisher/Printer:- Waterside Printers, Blanefield
First Published:- 1978, 3rd Edit. 1985
Good Luck

Thanks everyone for your replies. There appears to be a copy at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow...I live in Paisley so not far for me. Do ypu think the Duke of Argyll would or would've been the primary landowner?

Look at the Valuation Rolls at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
The principal landowners in Balquhidder in 1855 were Miss Buchanan and David Carnegie, and the Duke of Argyll is not listed.

Hi,
I think the Duke of Argyll's estates were further to the west, and the main recipient of rent in Balquhidder was the Duke of Atholl. In 1801 the fourth duke sold the superiority of his lands in Balquhidder to Sir John MacGregor Murray. David Carnegie bought his estate from John Lorne Stewart in 1848. The Buchanan of Arnprior estate appears as Baillie-Hamilton in later rolls.
John.
