Hi
I have managed to find information On a Benjamin Moffatt Born around 1858 Manchester using Ancestry and local Parish records. (he moved to Preston, Lancashire at some point).
I am struggling to go any further back. according to the marriage record his father was John Moffatt deceased.
Marriage: 25 Jun 1876 St John, Preston, Lancs.
Benjamin Moffatt - (X), 18, Doffer, Bachelor, Craggs Row
Ann Berry - 21, Spinner, Spinster, Craggs Row
Groom's Father: late John Moffatt, Laborer
Bride's Father: John Berry, Weaver
Witness: Thomas Wignall, (X); Ann Brown
Married by Banns by: William Ritson Curate
Register: Marriages 1876 - 1877, Page 72, Entry 144
Source: LDS Film 94000
I am unable to find anything else on census records, There is a possible match on the 1971 census. A Benjamin Moffatt was boarding at an address in St Johns Parish aged 13. I have found nothing on the 1961 records so I am unable to trace John Moffatt.
I would appreciate it if someone could try and point me in the right direction. clueless on what to do next.
Thanks :)

Benjamin Moffatt, born J Quarter, 1859, Manchester, MMN Gilmore (from GRO)

It is possible that he is the Benjamin bn 1859 parents William and Jane
who appears to be the one you have boarding in Preston.

That 1871 entry has several children to William and Jane who are indexed on Lancashire BMD with mmn Gilmore.
So your Benjamin seems not to be the birth in 1859.

Thanks for helping.
I have thought that maybe William is the Father, it has thrown me that the Father on the Parish record is John Moffatt
I have found two Benjamin Moffatts on the 1871 Census, One living in St Johns Parish born Manchester and the other who's Father is William. So that's why I'm unsure.
My brain wont work ;D

I am always suspicious when fathers are noted as deceased on marriages, probably because the two I have in my tree were invented as the children were illegitimate.
I think the 13 year old in Preston 1871 is most likely yours. You can discount the other one with parents William and Jane as he marries someone else.

1861 census, Manchester. Name spelt Moffit

Hello,
For reference: The 1871 Census at 5 Hammonds Row, Preston St John (in case there proves to be a familial connection to the Pearsons?)
Head: George Pearson 42, Iron Dresser, b Penrith Cumberland
Wife : Hannah 36, b Carlisle Cumberland
Dau: Isabella Mary 13, b Carlisle (mms Hodgson)
Son. Jno Willm, 12 b Oldham
Dau: Jessie, 10 b Oldham
Son: Thomas 5, b Carlisle (mms Hodgson)
Son: George 3 b Oldham
Boarder: Benjamin Moffatt 13, b Manchester
1881: Benjamin 25 & Ann 26 & children, at 1 Dickson Ct, Preston (Piece 4237/Folio 6, Pg 5)
1882: Benjamin's wife Ann died 1882 Preston
1891: Benjamin is a widower with his children ( and a widow boarder Hannah Laraway & her children) - at 3 Hammonds Row, Preston (Piece 3432 , Folio 12, pg 18)
1901: Allan St Preston
Benjamin Moffatt, widower age 41, General Labourer, b Manchester
With widow Elizabeth Charnley 33 (relationship not declared) and her children:
Charles V Charnley 9, Albert V Charnley 7 (both registered Preston as VASS, mms PLUMB)
Joseph M Charnley 5, Bertha M Charnley 1 mth (both registered Preston middle name Moffatt, mms not recorded.
Note: also a son Walter Moffatt Charnley mms Plumb (1899), and 2 girls Alice Moffatt Charnley mms not stated (1897) and Martha Moffatt Charnley mms not stated (1902) - all died.
Looks like a tangled web ( no marriage to Vass? maybe married John Charnley 1884?)
Seems your Benjamin married Elizabeth Plumb in Preston 1905 - at Preston St Peter according to LancBMD.
If so, would be interesting to see his father's details off that marriage?
Benjamin Moffatt died 1908 Preston ( age recorded as 49). (the other Benjamin, son of William & Jane, married Mary Ann, died 1929)
Cheers,
AMBLY

There is a baptism at Liverpool, Christ Church on 7 Nov 1857…
Benjamin Bell Moffat, s/o John & Isabella Moffat, 37 Clayton Street, a currier, born 21st October 1857.
Jo :)

Baptism: 10 Apr 1859 St Andrew, Ancoats, Lancashire, England
Benjamin Moffett - [Child] of William Moffett & Jane
Abode: 31 Brown Street
Occupation: Carter
Baptised by: George S. Allen Curate
if this is the 1859 record - father is William - not John

Thank you everyone
I really appreciate all your help. The brick wall has started to crumbled.
Looking at the information you have provided I am thinking Benjamin could be illegitimate hence the reason I am unable to find any other details.
Thanks again.
