Title: Hutchisons, Covington and Thankeron - Girdwoods, Pettinain
Post by: Aileen Wilson on Wednesday 07 June 23 20:45 BST (UK)
Hello!

I am trying to find more information on my great, great grandfather Thomas Hutchison (Born 1839 in Carstairs and Died 16 April 1916 in Thankerton). I have tried to find where he might be buried but so far have been unsuccessful. At the time of his death he was listed as a retired farmer. The address was given as Tinto Glen, Thankerton. In Census information there was also mention of Tinto View. I know the date of his death may be too 'recent' but am hoping someone might be able to help!

His parent's were James Hutchison (Born 1808 I think in Carstairs and Died 24 Mar 1895 West Calder) and Margaret Haddow (Born c1807 in Carluke and Died 10 Nov 1894 in Gladsmuir, East Lothian).

His wife was Margaret Girdwood (Born 1846 in Pettinain and Died in Thankerton 5 May 1905).
Her parents were Daniel Girdwood (Born 1819 in Pettinain and Died 13 Jun 1905 in Lanark) and Helen Govan (Born 1813 in Midlothian and Died 8th Dec 1886 in Pettinain).

Any information on any of these folks would be very gratefully received.

Thank you,
Aileen

Hi Aileen, I've checked the Upper Wards of Lanarkshire Monumental Inscriptions and couldn't find anything, sorry. You may be right about being too recent, the Upper Wards book tends to focus on pre-1855 inscriptions.

Hi Aileen,

Have you tried looking for his death in the newspapers to see if it gives details of his burial

Hello Lodger,

Thank you for looking - it was a long shot.

Rosie - thank you for your suggestion, I have started searching for funeral and obituaries now. He was named in a history of Covington and Thankerton Vol 2 (by William Fleming) as a notable in the area:

Thomas Hutchison (c1839-1916) was a farmer in Tinto View in 1901 (census). He had previously been anagricultural labourer in Cormiston and Coulter. His son Thomas was a merchant in Thankerton

This makes me more confident that there will be something somewhere about him (and his son) - just need to find it!

Best wishes,
Aileen

25 September 1912
The Scotsman

Describes the dairy farm “Tinto View” at Thankerton.
It’s being advertised for Lease so must be when Thomas was preparing to retire.

Here is the obituary article that rosie17 and mckha found. The death announcement in the same issue mentions that he was "late of Cornhill, Coulter"

22nd April 1916 Hamilton Advertiser

Quote
THANKERTON
THE LATE MR HUTCHISON TINTO GLEN.
Through the unexpected death, in his 77th year, of Mr Hutchison, Tinto Glen, there has passed away a singularly pleasing personality. A native of Carnwath parish, he had been associated with this district all his life-time. Before retiring from the duties of an active life, he was tenant of Thankerton Farm, and maintained a lively interest in farming to the end. This spring he had rendered to a friend good service in the sowing of the seed. He entered the Parish Council a few years ago, and maintained always a warm interest every movement for the welfare of the parishioners. But his sympathies were not narrow or merely parochial. When the war broke out he became an ardent worker for the British Red Cross Society in their special branch of egg-collecting for the wounded; and many a long journey he travelled with pony and trap often in miserable weather conditions, that he might benefit our wounded soldiers, indeed his last act was such a patriotic labour of love – the dispatch of a box of eggs for the wounded to the Scottish Central Depot of the Red Cross, Elmbank Crescent, Glasgow. He tried to do his duty. Loving much, he was greatly beloved. The funeral was largely attended, and the internment took place in Coulter Churchyard on Primrose Day.

Hello all,

Thank you so much for this information, it's wonderful. What a lovely obituary too, it definitely gives a clear picture of Thomas. I am also so pleased to know where he is buried. I attach a portrait of him in later life.

Many, many thanks,
Aileen
