Good Afternoon all,
This is a two part search.
Firstly, I am trying to find the correct DoB/DoD for John Lofthouse, son of John Lofthouse & Mary Buckshaw who married at Newton upon Ouse in April 1774.
John Lofthouse born about 1775 married a widow Mary Robson (maiden name North) in Stillington 1801. He possibly died in 1841 in Wheldrake.
Secondly, John's father John Lofthouse who married Mary Buckshaw was born about 1739 but cannot find his correct DoB/DoD or where born. He may have lived in Newton upon Ouse but was not born there.
Any help anyone can give would be greatly welcomed, thanking you for your time and effort in this help request.
Kind Regards
Mike

If he died in 1841 there should be a death reg on freebmd - but there isn’t
Wheldrake was covered by York RD
https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/york.html
Do you have any documentary proof of his birthyear & birthplace as John Lofthouse seems to be a popular Yorkshire name

FindMyPast 'Yorkshire Burials' has an image for 1841, my transcription:
John Lofthouse, Wheldrake, Dec 17, 70 years
added: it's on Ancestry too
-
GRO online & freebmd both show surname for that burial as Loftus
-
Definitely Lofthouse.

Definitely Lofthouse.
Probably depends on who was writing it - in many parts of Yorkshire they'd be pronounced the same.
-
He appears to be Lofthouse on the 1841 entry - living with (presumably) son John & his family aged 70
Piece 1228 book 17 folio 10 page 14
If his age was correct on both census & burial he was b 1770/1771 so may not be the son of the couple who married in 1774

Yes, a good example is the place in Redcar & Cleveland called 'Loftus'. It was formerly in the North Riding and was orignally called 'Lofthouse'. Presumably the shorter version took over because that's how everyone pronounced it. Anyone making an official record, and who wasn't familiar with the local pronunciation, could easily have written 'Loftus' for 'Lofthouse'.

Good morning all,
thank you for your replies so far. The John Lofthouse who married Mary Robson (Widow) was living in the parish of Sheriff Hutton on his marriage docs, but i cannot find when and where he was born. The 1841 death in Wheldrake may not be the same John Lofthouse as his mother & father married in 1774.
You would persume that he would have been born in Newton upon Ouse where is mother & father were living when they got married but no clues to that so far.
As for his father John Lofthouse who married Mary Buckshaw, his marriage docs is all i could find.
We have some great spellings of Lofthouse, some scribes saved ink by shortening the name to Loftus but i have found various spelling versions of the name such as Lofthus, Loftus, Lopthouse, Softhouse, Softus, Lufthouse etc.
Thanks again for all your help and hoping something crops up.
Regards
Mike

The baptismal record is really helpful and confirms your workings

Mabel,
Many thanks for this, this is what i have. The problem is that i cannot find both John's correct DoB/DoD and where they were born. I thought it would be better with more pairs of eyes having a look just in case i have missed something, many thanks
