Can someone confirm or not my thoughts
Charles Terry married Julia Gregory in Nottingham in 1868. Father Thomas Gregory. I have census for 1891
Charles is 19 on marriage
Witness on certificate is Agnes. Could be sister
My dilemma is
I have a census for 1861 with a Charles aged 12 and a sibling Agnes showing them as son in law and daughter in law (wrong I think )
Do we think this the right one
Or any suggestions
-
The term son & daughter in law was often used to describe stepchildren
-
I did think that
-
Is the surname Terry or Terrey on the marriage cert?
Charles Terrey born 1848 Notts mmn Lowde
-
1851 for Charles Terrey aged 2 - mother Agnes is a widow - plus 7mth old sister Agnes
-
There's other Terrys on 1861 also described as inlaw - although no obvious parents/step-parents in sight! Here's 1851. Siblings match 1861
Colwick St, Nottingham
Agnes Terrey 35 b Yorkshire. Widow, dress maker
Mary Terrey 10
Eliza Terrey 7
Frances Terrey 4
Charles Terrey 2
Agnes Terrey 7 Mo
This fits as there are also Smallwood children in the 1861 household
Agnes Terry, age 37, widow
Father Thomas Lowde, FWK
Thomas Smallwood, 37, widower, shoemaker
Father Wiliam, Smallwood, trimmer
Marriage 12 Jul 1852, St. John the Baptist, Beeston
-
1841 - husband is William - not Thomas but there is a Mary Lowd in household
-
Agnes Loud
William Terry
Marriage 23 Jan 1837, Derby, St Werburgh,
-
1841 - husband is William - not Thomas but there is a Mary Lowd in household
Thomas is I think the name of Charles Terry's father in law - Thomas Gregory is mentioned in the opening post. I read that as his father's name too at the start
-
Mary Lowd - father Thomas, marries Charles Bell in 1841. Agnes Terry is a witness. Mary and Charles Bell witness Agnes' marriage to Thomas Smallwood in return. in 1881, nephew Charles Bell is with the Smallwoods
-
So the thinking is
Agnes loud marries William Terry in 1837
Has 5 children with William. Youngest 2months in 1851 and she is the head
Any death seen for William
Marries Thomas Smallwood
And when Charles marries Julia he uses his step fathers Christian name but real fathers surname?
On the previous page of the 1861 there is a Hannah something. Could she be a grandmother?
