Title: Can anyone decipher what this says please?
Post by: Parmesan on Tuesday 30 May 23 21:03 BST (UK)
E Tomlinson, surgeon in ??????????? infirmary.

Not sure if the word would refer to his speciality, or a place name because my man died at Piccadilly Infirmary but it clearly doesn't say that.

Thanks.

'Attendance' possibly with 'at' after it but not sure, would read better if 'at' is there

thank you both. I think that's right. I've just been coming to the conclusion that the last bit was 'dance' or 'dence'.

Thanks again.

I agree with attendance.  The ink is faded for the first "A", but if you spell it out, isn't the "at" just the ending "ce" of attendance?  Either way, you can get the gist of it!

The closest mention I can find for E. Tomlinson, surgeon in the old newspapers is in 1842, where he was the house-surgeon for the Royal Infirmary, presumably Manchester, as it was a Manchester newspaper.

Interestingly, no male E Tomlinson surgeon or physician turns up in the 1841 census within a 20 mile radius of Manchester.

Just in case you’re not aware, the Manchester Royal Infirmary was at that time located in what is now Piccadilly Gardens. Not that far from Angel Street - the deceased’s abode - within the infamous Angel Meadow area.

Thanks all, I'll have a look at the newspaper.
I too, could not find in 1841.
Finally, yes I did know about the infirmary. The death cert all has Piccadilly Infirmary as place of death.

Thanks again for all the information. Much appreciated.

Bit of a gruesome tale in that newspaper article. Fancy sending someone home with their arm shredded  :o
