Hi, I’m descended from Anthony Tallentire 1714-1780 and Elizabeth Brumwell 1722-1775 but am struggling with the Tallentires in particular. I can’t find a baptism for Anthony but in the marriage bond it states he’s from Stanhope parish and Elizabeth is from Gateshead. They married at Gateshead but the children were baptised at Stanhope with my 4x great grandmother (Jane Tallentire 1761-1820) being baptised at St John’s Chapel (a chapel of ease for Stanhope so the others may have been baptised there too). Anthony’s burial at St Johns Chapel states he lived at Westgate. Anthony and Elizabeth had seven children; Anne, Elizabeth, Dorothy, Francis, Jane, John and Mary.
Any suggestions will be gratefully received

Have you looked at Northumberland as a possible pob for Anthony?
Or even Cumberland as the surname seems to occur there.

Nothing directly relevant, but just in case you don’t have these:

There are baptisms at St John’s Chapel for Anne, Elizabeth, Dorothy, Frances, Jane, and John. Mary not found.
Note that Frances was a daughter (you have Francis). If John was Anthony’s only son, perhaps his father was also John? A tree on Ancestry has his father as John (1690) but I see no evidence. Perhaps this tree is yours and your reasoning is the same as mine?
I see that for his burial (also at St John’s Chapel) he is simply referred to as Mr. Tallentire. He must have been a noteworthy character in the locality.

Thanks Alan. I’d missed the records where he was a witness or the marriage bond. As it happens his wife was a Brumwell so that’d fit in nicely. The masculine spelling of Francis was via a transcription as I haven’t seen a PR for that one. I’m assuming Anthony’s father was a John but have no evidence to support it yet. I’m also a bit in two minds about Anthony’s standing. The marriage states he’s a “Gentleman” that newspaper quote you sent suggests he’s a school master but at the burial there is an “m” after the entry which I thought might have indicated a miner although it could just as well indicated master I suppose. Then again occupations can change with circumstances. I’ve not been able to find a good fit in Northumberland, Teesdale, or the Cumbrian end of the dale for his baptism as yet,
Thank you very much for all the info and suggestions, I appreciate it tremendously.

Find a Grave has the burial of Frances (female) as the daughter of William Tallentire buried 1 November 1778
St John's Chapel
Needs more research

Durham Records Online have a transcript (from the PR) for the burial of
1st Nov 1788 Frances Tallentire of Westgate, daughter of Mr Tallentire
BTs for Stanhope - listed as burials at Chapel
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6XBQ-7JT?
her father just listed as Mr Tallentire
so unless there is a surviving headstone or transcribed MI, I am not sure where the Find a Grave record has the reference to 'William' Tallentire from?
Durham Records Online have a transcript (from the PR) for the burial of
Mr Tallentire of Westgate on 28 Apr 1780
but the BT has that as
28 Apr 1780 Anthony Tallentire of Westgate

The lower panel in this image is from the burial of Frances Tallentire (Bishops Transcripts), showing the “daughter of” name and transcribed as “Mr” on FindMyPast. The upper panel is from the same page of the register, a few lines up, showing a “Thos.”
I think it is clear that he was Mr Tallentire on this record and in his own burial record, which points to him being a person of note in the district.

Thanks Amondg…I’ll have to look into that but it is called into question by Boo’s post so needs delving into.
Boo, thank you for that. I obtained the 1780 burial from PR transcripts at the church itself where it only gave Mr Tallentire. I was unable to locate it on familysearch so thank you for the link. Clearly the same person. By the way, it’s not the first time I’ve found discrepancies between the BT and PR (or transcripts thereof) but I’d say that info seals Anthony’s fate. Lol.
Sadly it doesn’t appear St John’s Chapel church has any family MIs. From what I can see Find a Grave have largely used burial transcripts for St John’s Chapel which unfortunately falsely raises expectations.

Thanks again Alan, sadly the images are fragmented so I’ll hunt them out on FindMyPast, so thanks for the heads up

Hi Clive, yes there are always discrepancies so I try if possible to check both BTs and PRs to see if they give the same info.
The BTs for St Johns Chapel are a bit of a mixture as it was originally a chapelry within Stanhope Parish
This is the first page for St Johns Chapel BTs on Family Search:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6LD3-4RV?
and as that shows, if you don't find what you are looking for in there then try the Stanhope BTs which start here:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6XBQ-4LW?
I did find some MI transcripts on FS for this churchyard, not sure when they were compiled but Gateshead Central Library may be able to tell you as that is where the LDS filmed the book.
There are a fair few which were 'unreadable' and no Tallentires unless I missed them.
