Does anyone know best way to insert a missing generation in Ancestry. I'm trying to help a young lady sort her tree and one of the errors i have discovered is she is missing a generation, so that children are listed as grandchildren when they should be great grand children. (Parents missing) The help section within this programme doesn't specifically list this problem. As this tree has a large number of descendants, I don't want to suggest moving anybody without knowing the correct way, incase I make her later generations disappear.

Add the missing parents as you would normally which means they will look like siblings of the grandchildren. Then go into each grandchild and use the Edit Relationship button to remove the current parents and replace them with the parents you have just added. This won't change any other info apart from their parentage, but you must add the new parents first.

Please make sure that you have a back up copy of the tree before you add the missing generation (just in case anything goes wrong)

Not sure how to do that with the tree. Once again the help area doesn't specify back-up, although it talks about downloading or up loading.

What is the name of the software that is being used?

It is a straightforward task.
Assuming that the missing generation are not in the tree then:-
From the profile of one of the Grandparents, select the Add Family.
Add the missing person, then go to their profile and add the details that you want.
In tree view select one of the “grandchildren” to open their profile.
Then from the right hand dropdown with the Pencil icon select Edit Relationships
Add the correct parents and remove the incorrect ones.
Repeat for each “grandchild”.
PS
There is not a copy tree feature in Ancestry that I am aware of, create a Gedcom prior to undertaking the amendments

Not sure of the capabilities of the tree owner so would have to check with her on that one.
According to "Edit relationship" the information doesn't get lost, it's still there. I did a test on one of my own small practise trees and that seems to be so.

Can't assist with making a back up from a tree on Ancestry -- I use a stand alone software application on my PC -- I do not have a tree on Ancestry.
