Charles GREGORY baptized 4 children in Stanton by Bridge:-
21 Feb 1697 Mary
12 Apr 1702 Sarah
26 Feb 1706 Elizabeth
20 Feb 1710 John
I can't find the mother's name, nor a marriage. I've found a couple of possibles (London and Newbury), but I think they're 'non-runners'. If anyone can help, I should be most grateful.

Have you seen the will of Charles Gregory on FindMyPast dated 1721? May not be the same one, but he mentions children with some of the same names, plus others. I haven't read it properly. It says "of Lichfield" but that's not too far from Stanton by Bridge.
Good Luck

Thank you.
I ruled out Charles of Lichfield because he baptized his daughter, Sarah, on 04 Feb 1697, only 17 days before Charles of Stanton by Bridge baptized his daughter, Mary, on 21 Feb 1697, so there must be two separate families.
Charles of Lichfield m Mary GREEN on 05 Oct 1687 in Lichfield, and they had at least a dozen children between then and 1705
Thanks again

There are two burials at Stanton by Bridge that may be relevant
23/4/1740 Charles Gregory
27/3/1741 Margaret Gregory widow
-
They may, or may not, be relevant, but they are most certainly interesting. I shall see where they lead.
Many thanks.

I've looked on FindMyPast and FreeReg and cannot find those burials nor a marriage between Charles Gregory & Margaret XXXX.
FamilySearch is unresponsive at the moment.

I can't find a marriage either. Negative evidence here https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~brett/genealogy/census/stbri1662_ht.htm

Beautiful records - thank you
Charles and Margaret seem to have lived in Stanton by Bridge for over 40 years (1697 - 1740). Surely, that's where they married? Why on earth can't we find that marriage? Have the relevant PRs been lost?

I have checked the original marriage entries 1679-1697 - no Gregorys. The entries in 1679 are followed by 1686, there are no gaps, so either there were genuinely no marriages or they weren't recorded. If Charles had any brothers or sisters they didn't marry in Stanton by Bridge. I found the marriage of Sarah Gregory and James Taylor botp in 1732 and the burial of Elizabeth Gregory in 1742. The absence of Gregorys in the registers suggests Charles was from elsewhere as does the lack of burials for an earlier generation? Charles may be a royalist name rather than a family name?
This probably is nothing to do with your Gregorys but is worth reading if only for 'Loveisgod' Gregory! https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/3d42ee12-0ee6-4a10-b721-568684625b07

When you came up with those two burials, it looked as if you'd found the forename of Mary's mother, and I believe that you have, but proving it might be impossible. I've done a country-wide search for Charles GREGORY & Margaret XXXX, and found a few in the 1690's, but they're all well away from Derbyshire.
I'll have another attempt tomorrow.
Thanks again for all your efforts.

I think the chances of finding the marriage are slim. Other descendants appear to have tried https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~blanchec/genealogy/whitefam.htm?fbclid=IwAR0npdtkZ1j_zAwu6CtR6qOpEsvoGQxCiIArau2f10T-t5HN_7jV3S6i8Yc To be thorough you would need to do a painstaking search beginning with the parishes around Stanton by Bridge ie Repton, Melbourne, Barrow, Swarkestone, Ticknall, Foremark and Derby Hills before spreading outwards. Then you are looking at wills, National Archives, Derby Record Office, Hearth Tax, Free and Voluntary Present etc. The will of Thomas Gregory 1696 Swarkestone would be worth a look. Good luck!

Reverting to the burials of Charles and Margaret, I assume that they were married. A search covering 1660-1740 for the whole of England has produced only one result:-
05 Mar 1727/28 Charles GREGORY m Margaret ALLEN, both otp, in Clerkenwell
which, even if they subsequently moved to Derbs, is too late for them to be the parents I'm seeking in 1697-1710. Regretfully, Margaret ALLEN is not the lady I'm seeking.
