I am looking for the family of James Marshall born 23 April 1914 Midlothian. His father's name was also James Marshall. I believe there were 3 brothers William, David and Alexander.
Does this family show in any Census or Records?
I do know that James 1914 died in Italy 1944 and have details of that - my interest is in the family he left behind.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thankyou Monica. Yes those are the details I have. I do not have access to any Scottish Census or birth records so that is where I need help.

If it is the right entry for his death, his birth place is showing as West Lothian which is a different county to Midlothian where he was living in 1941 as given above.
If you are confident that his birth date is as you have, so happens there is only one birth showing for a James Marshall in West Lothian in 1914:
James MARSHALL
Mother's maiden name ORR
1914
672 / 153
Uphall, West Lothian
You can view the image of the birth registration on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk It is pay to view but costs are very reasonable. To access Scotlands People, just log in and register for an account. It costs £7.00 to be able to view up to 5 images online. There are cut off years for when you have to order, but what you are looking for initially is within the period you can view online
Where did you get his birth date and other details for him? No mention of mother's name?

Have you come across this link for him?

To help you get started, the birth in Bathgate in 1914 looks to be the correct one. His birth date on this shows as you have, 23 April 1914.
His father James and mother is Ellen Orr. Their marriage details, as is standard on Scottish birth certs, is included. If you want to work further back on their families, their marriage cert is on Scotlands People. Scottish marriage registrations include the names of bride/groom's fathers and mothers, including mothers' maiden names. Makes it easier to start working back.

Monica. Firstly let me apologise for the incorrect use of "Midlothian". I should have said West Lothian.
Secondly, thank you so much for the information you have sent - it is priceless !! More than I could have ever hoped for.
It will take me some time to absorb the info and pass it on to a friend who has a special interest.
Are you able to tell me if there are any descendents of the family?
Again, many thanks. Jazgran.

Hi Jazgran
Info by this time will start to get harder to find online as it will start to be too recent.
I think this might be the family in 1921. The person you are helping will have to look at the image on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for further details to check if it is correct. I am just doing some top line searches on the search page that is all.
I think the family could be in Mid Calder, Midlothian by 1921:
James Marshall 65
Ellen Marshall 39
Emily 12
William 10
James 7
And again just from the general index, for 1911 in Bathgate West Lothian:
James Marshall 49
Ellen Marshall 29
Emily 2
William 0

A few possibly deaths of babies for James and Ellen:

Mother's maiden name Orr
Alexander Marshall, age 0
1916
West Calder
Mother's maiden name Orr

Ellen Orr's death?
HELEN MARSHALL or ORR
Age 87
1970
684 / 19
East Calder
50 year rule on viewing deaths online on SP. So, this can be viewed online. Maybe the informant's name can provide some additional info.

First born daughter, Emily born in 1909 in Bathgate, had the middle name of Newton. This looks good for her marriage:
EMILY NEWTON MARSHALL and
JAMES ALEXANDER CAMERON
1928
685 / 4 / 227
St Giles Edinburgh

Hello again Monica. I thought I would just update you. As a result of your help I have been able to put my friend Ann in touch with the family of her late father. In fact they are hoping to visit UK in 2024. I noted that you had been able to put "Amendments" on the reubique site.
Thank you again.
