Title: not been able to find my father on the census
Post by: Hutton-Stirrup on Friday 05 May 23 06:40 BST (UK)

  Hi
I have not been able to find any record of my Father Frank Watts  on any of the censuses on Ancestry,
I have found a 1939 census with my grandparents Bernard and Ethel Watts along with my auntie Jean who was aged 11 at the time of the census, but no record of my father, he was born in 1924, he would have been about 15 in 1939.
The 1939 census is the only record I can find of the family, how often were the census's done,?  thank you for your Time

on the 1939 register there is an redacted line after Ethel Watts, is this your father Frank ?

Jean born 31 July 1928 follows.

You can request the file be opened with a copy of your fathers death certificate.

I've said it before; and I must say it again ;)

The 1939 National Register was NOT a census!
The Register was used, and updated, by the NHS until the early 1990's.

Those people under 100 years of age will be redacted, if still alive.

To add to what KGarrad has said. The 1939 Register was compiled for the issue of Identity Cards and then Ration Books, a totally different purpose to a census.

Thank you for your replies I did not know that,  My father died 10 years ago so I do not know a great deal about his early years.

The last available census is for 1921. The 1931 census was lost during WW2. There was no census during the war, the next one in 1951 won’t be released until January 2052.

He may have been evacuated when the Register was taken so you may need to extended the area of your search if you have not already done so.

Not all of those who would be under 100 years old and that have now died have been redacted. If they
died abroad this would not have been picked up.

Using FreeBMD. Marriage of Bernard WATTS and Ethel MARSON in q4 1923 Hull 9d 580

Birth of Frank WATTS mmn MARSTON q2 1924 Beverley 9d 145

Birth of Jean WATTS mmn MARSON in q3 1928 Beverley 9d 132

The person after Jean, who is redacted. will probably be the Humphrey V WATTS mmn MARSON born q1 1937 Pocklington 9d 78

I don’t see any other children so in the 1939 register the redacted person after Ethel and before Jean is almost certain to be your Frank.
Why do you need to find him there? his birth certificate will give you more information.
