Title: Wilson of Underley
Post by: ellerydesign on Thursday 04 May 23 08:32 BST (UK)
Looking for some data (births, marriages, burials) on Thomas Wilson of Underley Hall, near Kirkby Lonsdale  and Jane Pennington.

I know Thomas Wilson was born about 1658, succeeded to Underley about 1684, and died January 1723. No details of his wife Jane apart from baptism at Bootle 1664 and marr. Jan. 1685.

They apparently had 8 children, of whom 5 predeceased Thomas. The only names I have are:

Henry who died January 1721, marr 1716 Barbara.
Thomas, 3rd son, born 1691 = July 1714 Frances Tatham. They apparently had one child reg. at Kirkby Lonsdale.

Any dates or details would be appreciated please.

Kind regards, Craig

I found an interesting document online with a history of Underley, and which includes a section on the Wilson family. I don't know if it contains anything that you don't already know, but as a taster here is the family tree that is included (rather low res to meet the size restrictions).

The document is at https://tinyurl.com/ysmjk3ae (https://tinyurl.com/ysmjk3ae)

Underlay is in the parish of Kirkby Lonsdale. I wondered if the family baps and burials etc might be registered there between 1685 and the early 1700s? There is nothing on freereg, ancestry and family search that I can see. Does anyone know where I can access the parish registers online? C

There are three entries in The Biographical Register of Christ's College that may be of interest, but it's unclear to me if you are interested in the family before the last Thomas Wilson. Are you?

Anyway, here is the chronologically most recent:

Quote
Wilson, Henry: son of Thomas: born at Kirkby Lonsdale. School: Halifax, under Mr Cockman. Admitted pensioner under Mr Bainbridge 21 June 1639. Age 15.

B. A. 1642 Mids. Admitted at Gray's Inn 18 March 1630, as of Underley, Westmoreland: i.e. Underley Hall, near Kirkby Lonsdale.

Hi Allan,

Many thanks for that info on Henry Wilson.
You're right... Sorry. I should have been clearer. I'm actually researching the Pennington family of Seaton Hall, Cumbria (of which Jane is a member, daughter of Miles P & Judith Lawson). So largely interested in the descendants of Thomas Wilson and Jane P.
However there isn't much on the Wilson branch of Underley House, Kirkby Lonsdale. So any additional info is welcome.
This Henry (b. Kirkby Lonsdale c. 1624) would appear to be the father of Thomas (b. 1658).

Thanks, Craig

What is the source for Beethom? I ask because the article that I linked in reply #1 says:

Quote
In 1732, according to the Underley Estate "Title Deeds": "Hugh Ashton of Kirfitt Hall bought Underley Hall and lands and tenements at Keswick (i.e. Kearswick) from Thomas Wilson". By this time, the Underley Estates included both Near and Far Underley which had been consolidated by the Wilson Family.
.

It does also say that it is possible that the last Thomas Wilson never resided at Underley, so perhaps Beethom was a tenant? However that name appears nowhere in the document.

Thanks Westlass for these records. Great! Can I just clarify them with you please? I take it all these are in St Mary's church, Kirkby Lonsdale?

Judith bap 27 September 1698
Myles bap bap February 1688
Thomas bap October 1691
Henry bap November 1693
Jane bap May 1695
Mary bap September 1699
Robert bap August 1701
Mary bap September 1702

Is Judith definitely bap in 1698 and should she be placed between Jane and Mary?? Also there was a Margaret. Could she be one of the Mary's???

Then children of Myles....
Jane bap December 1720
Robert buried 1728
Thomas buried 1723

Is there any indication of Thomas senior's burial in 1723. And could you have a look for his wife Jane's burial if possible. Not sure when she died unfortunately.

Many thanks. Much appreciated. Craig

I've just found a good article called Underley House, a History of its Occupants....DocPlayer.net, where it indicated that Thomas Junior, son of Thomas senior and Jane Pennington, and who eventually inherited from his elder brother Henry, sold the Underley estate in October 1732.

Also here's a mystery?? Apparently there were 2 sons called Henry. This article states that Thomas Junior was the 3rd son and  inherited from his brother Henry. But Henry was bap after Thomas in 1693 and if there was an older Henry he must have died young before 1693. Mysterious!!!

Many thanks for that. Don't worry. Every day has a senior moment with me!!! Can make life more interesting!!!

Sorry can I ask you another favour??? Thomas born in 1691 married 1714 Frances Tatham and apparently had a child. Could you maybe have a look after 1714 and see if it's bap or burial is there. I'd be very grateful 😊

Regards Craig

Great thanks Westlass. I'd forgotten how brilliant Rootschat researchers are!!!
Many thanks again.
Can I just check again with you on your previous post... Is it....

Margaret born 1702
Thomas of Kirkby Lonsdale buried April 1715
Isabell buried 5 September 1725 ( was there any other info attached to this?)
Henry buried 1719
Henry baptized 1689 ( any month given?)
Do these entries only have either the month or year? None seem to have the complete date, ie. Day/month/year.
