Title: Seeking Information on HOG(G) ALLOA (ALLAN) In Kingbarns Fife
Post by: OhioHogue on Monday 01 May 23 20:27 BST (UK)
I'm searching for William Hog(g) and Jean (Jane) Alloa who were Married in the Parish of Kingsbarns, Fife March 20, 1791 OR February 11, 1791 in Edinburgh

William Hog(g) may have worked in Edinburgh and his parents are unknown

Jean’s parents may have been James Allan and Janet Carse of Preston Mill where James was a farmer (?)

William and Jean had four children whose births in Kingbarns, Fife are below:
1.   John Hog - born on 23 December 1791
2.   William Hog - born on 8 September 1793
3.   Janet Hog - born on 20 December 1795
4.   James Hog - born on 14 May 1798

Possible death of Jane Allan, the widow of William Hogg, was buried in the Calton Burial Ground, Edinburgh on March 1, 1835.

Any assistance to point me in the right direction to find/verify more information on these or other family members is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If you have found two records of the marriage it is because one of the couple lived in Edinburgh and the other in Kingsbarns. The banns had to be proclaimed in both parishes, so you get two records of the same event.

The original documents, available to view at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, will tell you who lived in which parish, and they might contain additional information.

Because of the considerable time between the two dates, I suspected an irregular marriage in Edinburgh being followed up by the kirk session. I found this in the minutes of the Kingsbarns kirk session:

Kingsbarns 20th March 1791 being sabbath
After prayer sedt. The Minister and all the Elders
The Minister informed the session, that  William Hog servant to Mr
Erskine of Cambo had given into him a Certificate of his Marriage with
Jean Alloway and that him and the Woman was to Compear before
the Session this afternoon they being called compeared, was then interrogate
by the Minister if they were Married, Answered they were Married, the
Minister then exhorted them to live mutually together as becomes Married
persons, the Certificate of their Marriage was produced by the Minister
the tenor whereof follows, Ednr 11th Febry 1791, That William Hog Day
labourer in Edinburgh and Jean Alloa, Daughter of James Alloa late
Farmer at Preston Miln Parish of Buncle were regularly married by me
date & place above mentioned is attested by Jo. Kemp, Minr
                                           The Sedt closed with prayer

[sedt = sederunt, Latin for they sat. Used to introduce a list of those present at a meeting, or used to mean the meeting itself.]

Thank you for the information. From a historic perspective, how/why would someone from Kingbarns meet up with someone from Edinburgh and have a connection to Preston Mill? It seems rather far for casual travel given the time period. Did something happen in Scotland during this time similar to the "Year without a Summer" around 1815? Any other clues I can follow? Thank you again!!

It was not unusual for people in the area to move to Edinburgh for work. William is described as being a labourer there at the time he married. It is quite likely that Jean was working as a servant in the town.
