Don't know if this is the right board for this, if not can someone suggest another.
This is the back of a postcard sent in 1947 by Jack KING to his half brother in NZ. He was born in 1928 so only aged 19. He seems to be in an Airforce shirt. After being where ever this was taken he didn't return to NZ but was heard from in Bundaberg. Have a death in QLD 1984/365 - 31/12/1983. Will try the QLD board later to search for more information on his life.
Does anyone know, or can hazard a guess what country this studio was located in? (Mr.G was no help)
"PALL MALL Photo Studio - 33, MALAKA FARIDA - ?? BUILDING AS NEW ZEALAND CLUB - GROUND FLOOR - CA"
Thanks

Cairo.
A photograph on the Online Cenotaph has this
“ Photo taken at PALL MALL Photo Studio, 33 Malaka Farida, Cairo. (same. Reginald Phillip Vercoe - Cairo 1944”

Hi Hettyhen,
It was in Cairo, Egypt.

Gosh, the family thought he didn't get far from NZ, but that's a long way from home!
Thank you both for the quick reply, lots more research to do now.
Cheers

Good morning on ANZAC day.
If you have reason to believe he enlisted with the NZ Airforce, the research of ERROL MARTYN is the go to, for information re his time with the NZ service.
Copies are held by the larger libraries in NZ, UK etc.
https://natlib.govt.nz/records/21730953?search%5Bi%5D%5Bcreator%5D=Martyn%2C+Errol+W.&search%5Bpath%5D=items
Alan.
PS. A little background to this life time project of Errol's, and the three large books that are the result of.

Was he John Alfred KING, service number 413167?
This individual died in a flying accident in 1943.

Spades, a Queensland death is noted in the original post. That is why I was not sure if he even enlisted in NZ.

Did he marry in Queensland on 22 Nov 1947 to (name not given as she may be still living)? Various mentions on trove of Mr and Mrs KING of Bundaberg, and his in - laws the SHUTTLEWORTHs.
Modified to add:
Possibly not, they are in Bundaberg at the end of March 1947, engagement announced 17 May 1947. He is the 3rd son of Mr and Mrs W KING of Bundaberg.

Do you feel you have been got at Spades ? Sorry about that.
On NZ Historic births I can not find any living NZ KING births in 1928. Just a still birth to Adeline Alice & John KING. sb. 37/3/1928. 1928/13770
As Allied service men on leave, would visit their clubs, with their "mates" I would not place too great an importance upon it being, the NZ CLUB.
Also as a half brother has been mentioned, he may also have been known by another name.
Alan.

Alan.
Isn't that because New Zealand (Historic) births only show on the NZ BDM online index as at "today's date - 1923" ???

Sorry everyone one I should have added more information
He was Jack Harris Edward KING born 1928 in Petone, father Charles KING Mother Ella Lydia. Married 1925. She had a son and daughter from a previous marriage.
I will attach the photo on other side of post card, it may not be an Air Force uniform but the family thought that was who he enlisted with.

Hi ... looks like Ella Lydia (nee DEW) was firstly married (1915) to Samuel Leonard KING (died at Woodville, Nov. 1918.) Was Charles the brother (b. 1893) of Ella's first husband, Samuel L. KING ? (Ella and Charles appear together in 1919 on Petone (Wellington) e/roll sharing an address with Samuel L. King's parents.
-
I see there are 2 Jack KING s in Bundaberg on electoral rolls, the one I mentioned earlier, and another who appears at a different address with an Elizabeth. Will look for more details later. :)
-
....ooops ... sorry, have deleted info posted here previously as I had wrong date of death for the Jack KING who died in 1983. :-[ ::)

Mmm ... something like 50 trees on ancestry.com site for Charles KING (b. 1893) and wife Ella Lydia (nee DEW). Some have generous numbers of "sources" (and I skimmed over a few)... but only one of those trees mentions "Jack Harris KING" - no dates or other info for him. ???
In case you don't already have it, here's link to father Charles' Probate record > his Will names his children :

Yes Charles married the widow of Samuel who died in 1918. Their two children were Ellen and Samuel.
Jack Harris Edward KING died 31/12/1983 not 1998. Death reg. 1984/365.
LU..Thanks for the Will link, tried to find the will but couldn't so thank you for that.

This is the only Electoral Roll where he appears with his full identifiable name. QLD.
There is not a female with King surname showing at that locality in that year.

Thank you for all the help, has filled in a lot of the gaps and given new leads to follow. I will order the Death Certificate, have a 1906 QLD one for another family member and that had quite a lot of information on it, and hope that they haven't changed the content.

Yes, Qld certificates often contain a lot of information (death certificates always depend on the knowledge of the informant though). This is a handy guide to what appears on Australian certificates:

Hi Hetty.
You don't have to exactly order it and wait.
It can be viewed as an immediate download after online payment. ;D

Hetty, also...
Have you been able to decipher any of the writing on the card?
I would be interested in the opinion of others, and I may be imaging things, but it looks as if there is original text beneath the scratchings and scribblings.
Almost as if an original message has been over written with the Love to all, Jack
Can you comment on this?
Sue
ADDING.
In My Opinion, the man looks a good deal older than 19 years. Crowsfeet well developed ;D
-
maddys52,
Thank you looks about as much as in 1906.
sparrett,
Think it says, "To Patty Len & Brian Love to all Jack". But will try arrange to have another look at the post card and see if there could be anything else under the splodge. I agree he does look a bit older than the dates make him to be. Len is Samuel Leonard King son of the first marriage of Ella Lydia to Samuel Leonard KING who died 1918.
Thanks to Lucy2 for the link, he is named in the Will of his father who died 1968 wonder if they found him?
The website was a bit confusing for my limited skills but will follow your link tomorrow and order the Death certificate.
Hetty
-
Ordered the Death Cert and it came back with "No Image available. Will be posted to your nominated delivery address once processed by the registry"
So don't know if I didn't press the right button at some stage or if hasn't been scanned, or whatever is done to make it an Image.

The death cert. has arrived, but doesn't have much more information.
Retired Painter. Died Princess Alexandra Hospital, South Brisbane.
Born Ptone New Zealand. (should be Petone).
Cremated 5 Jan 1984 Mount Thompson Crematorium.
Informant N. Culgan, No Relation, 124 Vendale Avenue, Moorooka.
Does give cause of death.
Thank you all for your help, fills in a few gaps just another 30 or so years to work on between Ayr and Brisbane.
Cheers

Ah ::)
Disappointing after your long wait. A mystery man for now.

You could try contacting the State Library of Queensland - they have an "ask a librarian" service. Perhaps for a newspaper lookup, either for a death notice, or just a general search.
https://www.slq.qld.gov.au/services/ask-librarian
-
Thank you maddys52 will try that, had a really good response from a question asked of the Christchurch one a few years ago, hope they are all as helpful and knowledgeable.
-
Have submitted a request to the Ask a Librarian and await their reply.
Will close this thread in the meantime and add to it if any information is found.
Thank you all
Cheers

Have had a reply from "The Librarian" and she had found a couple of newspaper clippings about a Jack King, who may or may not be this Jack King, one in Mackay and one in Innisfail, and some other possibilities to follow up that may help to discover why he just seems to disappear.
Cheers

That's good to hear. Hope this leads to helping solve the mystery. :D
