Happy new week folks! Just putting the diary thread here for everyone's use.  :)

Evening all
We’ve had a busy day as the grandchildren’s school was still shut today for teacher training , so we had the three of them. Husband is asleep in the chair and I’m watching tv with police chasing drivers who don’t want to be stopped!

Apropos nothing in particular and having a few moments to spare I did a bit of file tidying this morning- well it actually lasted much longer as I became engrossed in a small detail of family history which I had not noticed before. It would seem (subject to a little more detailed investigation) that my family line in North Dorset (Stalbridge) has a link with my wife's line going back to C1700 in Beverley North Yorkshire. (Smith, Bornick and Habersham)
The link is via the Habersham family.
Daniel Habersham had a son Joseph who appears to have moved south to Tarrant Gunville near Blandford. Joseph's son James married into my Greenstock line in 1822.(Harriet Mead nee Greenstock, whose first husband George had died not long after their marriage.)
I found an interesting document from the East Riding of Yorkshire Archives and Local Studies Service which mentions, amongst much else, a Daniel Habersham, a Dyer of Beverley and his eldest son and heir, Joseph Habersham of Gunvill near Blandford County of Dorset, Yeoman.
Still some work to be done on this but it looks like a positive.

It's quiet on the diary thread, I wonder where Louisa Maud and Viktoria are. Perhaps it's a conspiracy to see if we miss them.  :D

Today's rant.
It never ceases to amaze me how it seems so difficult for some folk to say a word of thanks- nothing effusive, just an acknowledgement of something given or a thoughtful gesture perhaps.

Recently, well over the past three years, we have been going through a rationalisation process, as have numerous other church congregations no doubt.

Christian religion has become increasingly less attractive to many people and as a result Churches are closing and congregations merging with others in the locality.

So where in this business does "thank you" come in. Well, in the case of our Church, we have amalgamated with three others in the area , under new management. In the process there have been some redundancies; in my case with my fellow organist we have gone from sharing the bench on alternative Sundays to perhaps one or two services "somewhere else" each quarter.

My colleague has been organist at our former church for over 40 years and I have done just over thirty years, sharing with him.

So where does the thank you come in?. Well, up to now (over 6 months since the closure) not a word from the hierarchy.

We go to Church to Worship and give thanks for all sorts of things and the music plays an important part in those acts of thanksgiving in the hymns, worship songs and incidental music provided before and after the service.

It wiould have seemed appropriate therefore that some form of recognition- just a simple note of thanks from the "collar", to say thank you for your musical input, would not have gone amiss.

I would be the first to admit that my playing skills are basic and not to a "recital" standard, but sufficiently competent to carry the congregations over many years through their worship.

Rant over.

I see exactly where you are coming from Jeff, as I have mentioned, our previous Organist did 64 years ,being taken home during the service the last time he was able to play, indeed he died at home  only days later.
Aged 81, so 17 when he started.
This year at our Christmas Service to remember family etc no longer with us, I took my baubles and put  them in the baskets ,alphabetically , and added them to the list of names to be read out.I noticed no one had remembered the Organist of 64 years.
Granted he had died a few years before and now his widow has gone and only daughter in York .
His Widow was very long suffering , choir practice, weddings ,Christenings and funerals plus services took a lot of his time.
So a bauble for them both and I placed it on the tree when their names were read out .
I made it pretty clear I felt it very sad he had not been thought of .
Who knows why his daughter was not present .

He was so good , the building vibrated , powerful, and so impressive .
Sixty four years and nothing .
I was quite angry .
Wrong I know in Church but wrong also he was already forgotten .
I always thank our new Organist and compliment him by saying “ I thought ——— was back:”
You gave your time and talent willingly and generously I am sure , sad that such selfless deeds are taken for granted .
I am sure you did not expect a big fuss but a simple “ Thankyou “ ought to have been said.
Viktoria.

Spent a lovely time with my sister in law ( husbands sister) and her daughter.
We always got on and she was my bridesmaid.
Went to a Golf Club for lunch, I risked Cheese and Onion pie with a lovely salad, it was delicious .Chef said he used Cathedral City orange cheddar .

We exchanged Christmas presents
She had her hair in a new style, very plain but really nice.
We had some laughs as usual.
Eldest son took me as he had to pop in to head office as though retired he does some consultancy work for them .
She lives quite close to his head office.
A most beautiful b&w cat had adopted her daughter but knows his way to s in l’s and tiddkes  there  when his owner goes out .
He was a stray ,but decided to stay !
He is free to go back to original owners at any time .

Stuff being moved from next door, very sad , I wish my son would consider
it , although he said he would at least look at it .
We could knock a hole in the wall so he won’t get wet when he comes for his tea!
He wants Fish and Chips for tea, but I am not really hungry , had a big lunch — for me.

What a lovely day but strong breezes, lots of tree pollen in the air.

S in L and her daughter said we would go to Holmefirth and visit the little Cafe which is a tourist attraction , where ,Compo Simonite , Cleggy and Foggy Dewhurst caused mayhem.
So that will be really nice , I love the programmes.

Near neighbour , across the lane, suggested a street party but decided a back garden one would be better.
My garden is open with a fair sized lawn but if rainy I don’t have room inside so  it depends how many will attend .
We are having a Jacob’s feast at church. Not sure how long that will take.
We will see.

Well must get on , look after yourselves folks .
Viktoria.

I have just returned from a fabulous long weekend in the Lake District, courtesy of my daughter, who has  been promising to drive me up there for some time - Covid got in the way.  My brother's family live up there, but I have not been to visit for quite some time, as we live right down at the other end of the country.

The weather was amazing.  We had expected chilly winds and rain, but what we got was warm sunshine and clear blue skies, though the fell tops were still sprinkled with snow.  A day at Derwentwater and a visit to the Aira Force were very special and my young grandchildren, who accompanied us on our 6 hour journey, enjoyed their encounters with my niece's animals - horses, dogs , chickens and Guinea pigs. Lowther Park, which I last visited around 40 years ago, has changed beyond recognition but is well worth a visit.

One of my niece's dogs is a Black Russian Terrier ( If you are interested in dogs, do look the breed up.   It has an interesting history.) and he is as big as a small pony!  He makes a great guard dog, but luckily he is also very good with children.  The other dog, a Bearded Collie, is half his size, but makes up for this by his loud barking!

To breathe in the pure air and to see the incredible fells and lakes made this a truly memorable trip.  It is many years since we lived in the area and my daughter was keen to revisit childhood memories. Our husbands stayed at home and got on with their various activities without us.  They seem to have survived, but were rather pleased to have us back.  I dare say they were wanting a decent meal again.

R J' rant,
I fully understand  your rant, at one  PCC  AGM  I offered thanks for all those who work behind  the scenes in church and grounds, I was told thanks had already been recorded by the PCC,  I told them I was not a member of the  PCC    but a member of the congregation ,  it was recorded  from then on,   I have always said many things are done by various people and thanks is never passed to them, quite often no one knows who they are.
A little thanks goes a long way,  I have noticed since that a general thanks goes out to  all these people who work behind the scenes
Which brings me to Christmas gifts , the youngsters, every year I have a quiet moan that I have not received a thank you for their Christmas presents, a friend of mine  actually gave up sending Christmas gifts to those who didn't say thank you, one child missed out on a generous 18th birthday gift, when they are young it is up to the parents to encourage a thank you.

Oh how lovely, The Lake District , used to go with the Schoolchildren every May, Youth Hosteling in Eskdale mostly.
Up to Hard Knot Roman Fort the first day, then Muncaster Castle, up Cat Bells the next day and then sinister Wasdale.
It was so enjoyable.
My Welsh daughter in law was really amazed when she visited, used to beautiful Wales she had not realised there was such stunning scenery in The North West.

Glad you enjoyed the break.Viktoria.

Roobarb, yes I am here,  no  conspiracy  going on between Viktoria and myself but it made me chuckle

Not a lot going  on here really did manage a trip out, left home and it was quite warm so we decided to go to the coast, by bus, by the time we were on our way it turned cold so we stopped off halfway and had lunch in a small town, was quite  enjoyable and we were so pleased we didn't go to the coast,  every morning  starts the same, sun out an warm and within a short space of time it has turned cold and very windy, but it is still only April.

Pleased Gillg you had a good break away, very nice part of the country.

Viktoria, hope your son decides to at least look at the house next door,  no good being sorry after, you are looking after him very well.

Take care everyone

Like the sound of your refreshing weekend break Gillg, a nice boost that would be.

Week started with a surprise visit from husband's brother and sister in law having driven up from Wellington, their style to do own thing unannounced, a while since we've seen them so very nice few hours together. He was to be our best man 50 years back, unfortunately had a serious skydiving accident just before and the next brother stepped in. So very lucky he was to survive and also to walk again and then met his wife to be soon after, went travelling on 'OE' together mid 70's and  impromptu wedding in London while her parents were visiting from NZ. Back home and without family have always made the most of life and work balance, enjoy taking opportunities to get up and go places as much as possible, postcard from Paris etc etc :-)

Husband had to pick up a new script so while arranging that booked us in for our flu and covid booster jabs together on Tuesday afternoon, both had the two in left arm with booster above the flu and all good with that and barely aware of having had them.

Long chats with my sisters midweek and birthday messages from friends and family, a couple of cafe lunches and outings, all very nice. 2 family cards came in mail again today with post often being slow these days, daughter in north was relieved hers turned up with those as had included a voucher along with creative cards from the granddaughters. Will be out and about with younger daughter Saturday while our menfolk are trading at a swapmeet and an away hobby day for me Sunday and another weekend will quickly disappear!

That is all nice news Mare.
Bright and sunny here but a sharp cold breeze.
Did a good pond clear out yesterday, herb patch today , must make tighter security as Henry Cat is sure to use it as his” personal facility “ if he can get in the frame!

A quick tea tonight ,Quorn veggie sausages, peas, fried onions ,mashed potatoes and onion gravy.
Son is very easy to please ,has a light appetite so is slender for his almost 6’ height,he might be 6’ but perhaps only 5’11”,which from a 5’7”” dad and 5’2 “
mum isn’t bad but maternal and paternal grandfathers were tall.

I do miss my neighbour , but now,the worry is I might trigger her poor memory ,she is settled in a Care Home, I will visit when her daughter thinks she is ready, the strange thing is not once has she asked about her home , I don’t want to stir her memory so she then thinks about her own home and perhaps frets.
I could say I was the new Queen, I bear a striking resemblance to a Queen —,well Queen Victoria on a bad day!
No not true , , more like Anne Boleyn or Catherine Howard ,after the executions as these days I do run around  after “ long legs “ like a headless chicken!

Oh shurrup Viktoria, ,you are not in Ukraine, Yemen or Afghanistan!
But sunny Ramsbottom, and glad to be there too.

Son will surely get a cat, then I can fall out with him if it gets in my herb patch !
He can do his own washing then .Well he did for six years during two degrees
and did not starve ,came home in holidays clean and respectably dressed.

Well ,herb patch calls.
I have an ingenious plan for a sort of cage , so I can get in and do what needs doing and easily access my herbs.
Presently it is that green plastic sort of chicken wire on canes .
I get caught up in it ,so a better frame and the sturdier green plastic fencing with about one inch squares.
Our local hardware shop sells everything and will cut to size .
A bit dearer than B & Q but you actually speak to a human being who knows what you mean!
Well must get on,  get weaving ,wire in , etc all terms for starting to work.

Cheerio.
Viktoria .

Ref my previous Rant.

This is the note we received from our Minister (the same one who does not say thank you), as her reply to our note to her when our son Nick died. We heard nothing further from her and she did not take his funeral service!

Was just browsing the site when I noticed the name Habersham mentioned with a connection to Beverley, East Yorkshire, posted by radstockjeff.  A quick phone call to a friend confirmed this was the same family she has a distant connection with. There is still a Dyer Lane in Beverley with connections to the Habershams.

Will try to PM radstockjeff.

Whew! No excuse for such brevity ,that borders on the flippant !

How hurtful, it does happen I know.
Taking the card from my husband’s long arrangement of white roses which covered his coffin ,which on the advice at the Crematorium that it would have to be disposed of very quickly ,so little room, we took it back to Church as it was Remembrance Sunday the next but one day ,to place in front of the altar as there would be poppies on the altar.
After the Remembrance service I went to get the card from the family which was on the long arrangement ,the Vicar accosted me and asked what was I doing? I said I was getting the card from my husband’s wreath to keep .
Not one comforting word ,nothing.
I actually felt he had no idea that I was the wife of the person whose funeral it had been two days before!
Not one sympathetic word or enquiry if I was alright!
Someone asked might they have a rose to remember a lovely gentleman ?
It seemed a good thing to do ,they all were taken, one by one.
I of course kept one .
Still nothing from the Vicar, but that was just him , not our Church as a
whole .
I reckon he must have felt a bit embarrassed when so many people took roses.

Nowt so queer as folk Jeff, but it is your Curate’s calling to be in a caring supportive profession and they failed miserably didn’t they!

You were most gracious with your thanks to RootsChatters  who really felt for you .
That is just one minister, my experience just another but by contrast the Curate was so kind and supportive , and I feel there are sure many more of each kind of experience .

Keep your chin up, you added to so many services by playing for so long .
Thanks for feeling we are kind enough to sympathise and empathise .
That is a generous compliment .
Viktoria.

Bit harsh on both accounts.
I always try to be sympathetic to mourners without going over the top, just a few kind words is enough,  I remember a colleague I worked with was very upset as a member of staff had completely blanked her,  my mother in law said the same, her friend actually crossed the road to miss her, sometimes people don't know how to handle the bereaved but a person of the cloth should know how to behave on such occasions.

Not very Christian behaviour from the minister and the vicar mentioned is it? They ought to know better and behave in a more caring manner.

Viktoria I think you rightly say that there is nowt as queer as folk!
I am so sorry to hear how badly you have been let down Jeff.  I agree that you should have received thanks for all your years of service.  And I think to receive a note of such brevity after you lost your beloved son would feel more hurtful than comforting.
I hope this won't put you off going to Church altogether!  It sounds like your Vicar has no people skills, which does seem odd considering the type of work they are in.
Title: Re: Diary > Summary - Week ending 23rd April
Post by: Gibel on Friday 21 April 23 21:41 BST (UK)
My Dad died suddenly in December 1993, I went South the next morning to meet up with my brother who travelled North to meet up at Dad’s. We then had to go to the hospital to formally identify Dad as he was basically dead on arrival at the hospital. There had to be a post mortem as well.

When I returned 4 or 5 days later after we had made arrangements for the funeral,it was quite late. I opened the front door and there on the mat was a booklet from the Minister entitled, “ prayers for the dead and dying”. Not a nice thing to return home to. He never visited me. I didn’t like him much!

Our organist/choirmaster regularly gets thanked by the ministers and church members, I think it’s so rude when people forget about all the people behind the scenes in churches who don’t get thanked. Fortunately the people at my church do think about all those people without whom there wouldn’t be a church.
Title: Re: Diary > Summary - Week ending 23rd April
Post by: Viktoria on Friday 21 April 23 23:17 BST (UK)
That is nice Gibel , it means a lot ,week in week out to be relied on and too often taken for granted.
The Vicar I was rather angry about did not take my husband’s service ,but he knew me from every Sunday attendances .
He would probably know The Curate would visit for arrangements ,hymns and eulogy etc.
But not one word from him .did not make any connection ,and when I said “my husband’s flowers “ he could have said something then.

I dislike cliques , and sadly there was one at that time ,centred round one woman.
Very capable without doubt but very divisive too.
The Vicar ought to have steered clear of that and it would have probably have fizzled out .
But our Church is latterly more open and friendly ,we are glad to be together again .
Quite a lot of new people in the congregation and it has a very positive effect.

I remember  Archbishop Ramsey, he came to Gent and officiated when my son and other young members of the congregation were confirmed.
He said, “ If you search for a Church where there is no no discord or differences, avoid it like the plague ,because it is not real, not natural that a group of people will all think alike ,have the same opinions and  act in the same way.
But pray together and endeavour to work together for the greater good, not your personal satisfaction .”
Wise words .
There had been some upset at that Church, one hard working but dominating woman had put The Vicar’s lovely gentle wife in second place , so much so the Church was mockingly named after her , not it’s Saint’s name!

Well time for bed ,tired after clearing my herb bed and getting it tidy and Henry cat proofed until I get the proper protection made.
Another week gone by ,where do they go to?
Goodnight and a peaceful day tomorrow .
Viktoria.

Last night I had a dream that I was crying after coming home and finding that someone had smashed all of of my windows.  When I woke up I  googled to see what possible interpretation this might relate about the state of my mind.  I read that this might mean I am feeling 'fragile' and 'stressed'.
Well, I think there might be something in that because my brother was taken into hospital recently (he is 11 years older than me and the only sibling I have left).  Although, I have had message from SiL today to say that the hospital Doctor says treatment is going well and dependent on next blood test he might be able to return home tomorrow.
Also, there is maintenance work going on at my house at the moment, which is a good thing but I will be glad when the scaffolding finally comes down.
Also, I still haven't been able to get an appointment to discuss my blood pressure readings with the Doctor.  I know she thinks I should go on meds but I want to discuss it in case the readings were down to me being anxious about it.  For one thing, it did come down quite a bit on the day I heard the shock news about my bus pass was going up by £18.  On that day I felt more concerned about the increase so I was less focussed about worrying about blood pressure reading although admittedly even on that day it wasn't really in ideal range.
I had emailed receptionist giving several days when I would be able to come and I explained (yet again) that as I only have pay as you go phone my credit gets all used up if I ring as I get put on hold in the music and 'your call is very important to us' queue.  Receptionist emailed back to say if I can't ring I must show up in person on a Monday morning at around  8 am and they will see what they can do.  Getting an appointment at my doctor's surgery can feel like the healing pool at Bethesda  in the Bible.  The first one(s) able to jump in will be the one(s) to be helped.  Finally, I have a back shift tomorrow so I will get up very early tomorrow and go along for 8 am and see if they can help me get an appointment.
I was talking to a friend at Church today and they asked about my blood pressure.  I have told them whole saga.  I said to my friend that I can't understand why it should be up as most of the time I feel very calm.  (I have been than told by more than one person in the past that I have a very serene disposition).  Friend said that is why it is such a silent killer.  (I do hope doctor doesn't use words like 'killer' when I do finally get an appointment; I won't be very keen to hear that type of language. ::))
Friend offered to bring me her old blood pressure machine the next time I can get to Church.  I think I will try to politely decline.  I think I would find it a tad depressing to be taking measurements all the time.
An elder who was giving the sermon today reminded us about the Government alert today.  SiL also sent message to remind - although I knew already from a RootsChat post.
I will admit a little bit excitement today waiting for this to sound over my phone and Kindle but I felt a bit disappointed when nothing happened.  I wonder if it's because I only have a pay as you go phone with no internet on it?  I don't think this seems to have been massively publicised.  I have heard some say that this is because the government is worried about Putin but I think the official line is that is for emergencies in general.

Wondered what the fuss was about,  my phone 6ft away from my husband wasn't heard by him,  feeble sound even though my volume was up high,  not all phones got it, was it worth it?.

RTL, it sounds like things have been piling up on you so I suppose that would account for your weird dream. I hope your brother is well enough to go home tomorrow, that will be one thing off your mind. I did read somewhere that surgeries are going to have to put a stop to the business of ringing at 8am and allow people to book a slot at other times. The GPS are worried about the effects and have doubts that they'll be able to cope with it. This isn't the article I originally read but sums it up:

Re the alarm test, as someone on another thread commented, that's what testing is about. For anyone who missed it, you can get your fix here:

Thank you Roobarb, I am really hoping my brother will be considered well enough to be able to go home tomorrow.  SiL has reservations about  it being too soon but hopefully he can recuperate better at home.

Thanks for the link Roobarb, I agree that surely it would be better to be able to book at other times and not just at 8 am and find that might be virtually impossible to get through or to get through but find that appointments have been taken.

Just wondering if anyone has made or will be making the Coronation quiche?  I would like to give it a go at some  point.  Although, as a vegetarian, I would have to adapt recipe slightly as I would definitely not wish to put lard in the pastry.  I have been having trouble getting broad beans at my local supermarkets.
I think I might have to try M&S in Newcastle en route either to or from work.
I have offered to make one for celebrations at work but one person grimaced about the idea of tarragon and another looked at me like I was stark raving mad when I said it would have broad beans in.  By her expression, you would think I had said I was going to put arsenic in it. They said they would much prefer broccoli and spinach instead.  It seems like it might be hard to please everyone and if I do make it, I am not sure if it will be a true Coronation quiche at all, since we are all such fuss pots. ;)

Sorry to hear about your brother RTL. He's in the best place though getting treatment. I agree about the hassle of doctors appts. My bp goes up if I have to phone at the dreaded 8am! I need an appt for tonsilitis ( again) so I tried to do an  Econsult today .....my practice doesn't support econsult over a weekend apparently , so it's the 8am phone saga for me tomorrow.

Re the phone alert, my husband only has a pay as you go and no internet, but his rang out at bang on 3pm. Mine sounded at exactly the same time. Both were quite loud and we were watching tv.

Thanks Candleflame,  I do take heart in this that my brother is in the best place for getting treatment and that it sounds like things seem to be going on the up.  It felt such  shock to hear he had gone in.

Candleflame, I'm so sorry to hear you have tonsilitis.  I do hope you get through at 8 am tomorrow and that you will get speedy and effective treatment and recover soon.  :-* Let us know how you get on.

Oh so the test does work for pay as you go.  Shame I didn't get it over mine, I was quite looking forward to it.  The silence felt like a bit of a let down.

RTL sorry to hear you’re having a few worries at the moment and hope things get sorted soon.

Also hope CF tonsillitis improves.

Went over to Manchester today to visit our son.  Spent a lovely few hours at Styal Mill.  This display in the gift shop caught my eye and just had to take a photograph for Viktoria in view of her recent purchase.

Bad dreams are worrying, but I can imagine a normal thing if you are anxious and worried.
I hope your brother continues to improveR.T.L. .

Great service in Church today ,as it was St,George’s day the children came in earlier than usual.
Theme was all about knights, and  doing good things for other people, chivalry and bravery to stand up to bad things.
After the children were invited to gallop off round Church, it was funny as one or two did what little boys in days of yore did, ie gallop round slapping their bums, chasing baddies or Indians round the badlands of Manchester’s working class areas, after the kids’ Saturday Matinees.

Today was the Annual P,CC meeting ,the Curate had to be voted for,so we asked did he want to stay, then he left the Church and waited and it was a 100% we wanted him to stay .
I offered to go round Church with shovel brush and bucket after the “ horses” - but only if I could have the “ detritus “ for my roses.
On May  7th,a Jacob’s feast , to celebrate The Coronation .

So many empty pews , old friends who have died since lockdown , but some new people too, so very encouraging.
Hope the next week is a good one but it will be cold according to the Weather Forecast.
Many thanks for the photograph of clogs ,how kind to remember.
Cheerio, look after yourselves.
Viktoria.

We had our APCC today, the money is the most worrying  ,  people have died during  Covid, but hopefully we can keep making ends meet, we have to pay a staggering amount to our  local diocese, calculated by the amount of people who live in the village, not the amount who come to church,  our electoral roll has 50% or people who live outside of the parish.

Sorry to hear of those who are unwell, hope they will be perking up soon, some decent weather would be nice, this evening we had thunder and lightning plus terrific downfalls.

LM

Forgot to add, my church didn't celebrate St George's day as it was a Sunday, never heard of that before

Sorry to hear about your brother RTL. I hope he’ll soon be home again.

My brother was taken into hospital this morning with heart problems. He has on going  heart problems but this time ended up in hospital. It was his wife’s birthday today too!

I’m just popping in briefly to reply to RTL’s question:

Just wondering if anyone has made or will be making the Coronation quiche?  I would like to give it a go at some  point.  Although, as a vegetarian, I would have to adapt recipe slightly as I would definitely not wish to put lard in the pastry.

Yes, I am going to make it, and with lard, and serving it as suggested with a green salad, potatoes (sadly there is no such thing as “new” potatoes here, so normal potatoes it will have to be). We will have plenty of flags and bunting for atmosphere and to get into the spirit of the occasion.  ;)

There are some alternatives here - and one for vegetarians RTL:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/coronation-quiche

Though I agree that changing it too much will make it not a true coronation quiche.

I did want to make Dillegrout which was a sort of stew presented to King Charles II at his coronation in 1661 by my ninth great grandfather Sir Thomas Leigh who held the Manor of Addington. Though The Manor is long gone, sadly, I thought it would be a fun thing to do. Family didn’t like the sound of it (spoilsports) so I decided not to go to the effort for something which might not be appreciated, though it is said to taste better than expected. So quiche it is.  :)

I hope everyone who is unwell, or who has family who are unwell, improve very soon.

I'm so sorry to hear about your brother Gibel.  This must feel quite stressful for you too, having this worry about him.  I do hope things improve for him soon.

Thanks for all supportive messages.
I have just heard from SiL who says my brother will not be coming out today after all but there might be a possibility that he might be discharged tomorrow night dependent on more results.  But he is up and walking about now and is pain free.  I will go see at home later this week or at the hospital if needs be.  SiL had booked a slot for me to go along with her.  Fancy having to book a slot!  Much easier in the days you could just walk in and visit.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dillegrout

That sounds like quite an illustrious ancestor you have there Ruskie!  I had to google the dillegrout as I hadn't heard of it.  Because of the history attached to it I would have been interested in trying it if not for the capon (castrated rooster).  The almond milk, sugar and spices sounds nice.  I can understand that you would feel 'spoilsports' about people having reservations about your adventurous cooking proposal.  I feel a bit the same way that people are at odds already about the tarragon and the broad beans.  Even if they won't let me do a trueish Coronation quiche for work (minus the lard) I think I will make one anyway at home.  I would still like to try it and share with family who might not object to the main ingredients.  Although I think there might be fuss pots on this front too.
As a child my Mother would bake with lard all the time.  I would eat her pastry because I didn't know what lard was and they didn't enlighten me. 😝

I am sorry that you all have this worry about having to pay this money to the diocese, LM.
It sounds a bit much that this is based on the whole village rather than just on those who attend Church.  I do recall a quote somewhere - can't remember exactly who said it but it was along the lines of that Church is the only organisation that exists for the benefit of people who are not its members.  But still .. having to find the money especially in this economic climate must be a worry.

With ancient Churches there is often a Chantry charge.
If any work needs to be done- say a new roof or even roof repairs ,houses in the village had to contribute and I am pretty sure still do, it is in  the deeds of my daughter and son in law’s house, built 1600’s .

Thank you for the good wishes. I decided to follow the recommendation of my hairdresser and go and queue outside the door of the surgery at 7.45 am. I’ve never done that before as I try not to see a doctor unless I’m desperate. It was only a small queue of five but according to the ladies who have queued before , sometimes there’s 15 in the queue. Any way I was given an appt at 8.30 am so just sat and waited till then. Saw a lovely lady doctor who I’ve never heard of before. She was very thorough and agreed I needed second level abx and wants me to go back in four weeks for a review and she may refer me to ENT ! I’m not holding my breath about that, nor about how I’d get the review appt, but I’m delighted I got to see a real doctor face to face and I have the abx. Hopefully they will kill all germs dead!

I have to book my Covid jab, my friend tried yesterday but was given a venue the other side of Bolton!
She is 88: has hip problems diabetes and a stoma!
No direct route ,so in to Bury, out to Bolton then a bus to the venue!

The problem seems to be our postcode, which is BLO, why Bury has that I don’t know ,but such a journey for such an elderly person - even without all her extra difficulties !!!
It was done in our easily accessible Civic Hall previously .

Progress my foot!

Stop the World I want to get off.

Son bought himself a present yesterday with his Birthday money.Well  he thinks he has chucked the cheque out ,but went to the antique shop and bought a small cannon!
I paid as his cheque can’t be cashed ———can it?
He has several already , so we will be ready for  all invaders!
I am more likely to be seriously injured falling over the darned things !!!
Or tripping over the huge cannon ball in the tiny vestibule!
Swords and decommissioned weapons in his bedroom!
But very knowledgable about arms and such things .

A rather grey day today, and cool.
Some sewing to do so a quick tea of omelettes and salad.
I want to finish the sheets etc for baby Kyra’s dolly’s pram.
We hope to go down towards the end of May.Lots of Birthdays in May.
Flash Harry, his lovely Mummy, me ,his Daddy who is my grandson.
So one big “ do” .

Well must get on, some ironing to do and some pale coloured washing.
I hope my son gets a cat or kitten when we get back ,he loves cats .

Look after yourselves, hope there are health improvements in those not well .
Thanks for your news everyone .
Viktoria.

Funnily enough, I had the "Queue at the surgery" experience today, for the onlytime. Yesterday I went for a blood test, questioned some of the load of medication I was on, the nurse doing the test agreed, I tried to book a Drs Appt asap at reception, to discuss the over medication I felt was happening, and couldn't then, but was told to turn up c 8.00 this morning, which I did, and in person was given an appointment for less than an hour later - with a REAL Doctor, actually face to face, in person!!! Can't remember ever ever getting one without at least 40 mins hanging on to 'phone, listening to rubbishy semi-musical sounds.....
Almost like the "olden days", when you just turned up at the Drs, and, in our village, sat in the entrance hall on one of a row of ornately carved dining chairs until Dr popped out from his office, and called you in!!! No hard to get appointments in those days!

I remember waiting with my daughter as a very young child in the waiting room, could be up to 2 hours wait, I went well prepared with books and crayons, I didn't initially like pre booked appts but it is far better than the situation now, I often booked online and could look to get an appt of my choice, I don't somehow think those day will return.

Good to be able to get an appointment like that but it's a ridiculous situation for people who are feeling very ill and not fit enough to queue at the surgery. No easy solution of course as the problem is that the NHS needs more GPs. Many are now working part-time and much as I'm in favour of women GPs, the younger ones may well go on maternity leave which further reduces the number available. And of course a lot of doctors retire earlier these days,

By the way, we're in last week's diary thread here!  ;D
