Title: President Biden's Roche and Fox Ancestry
Post by: Wexflyer on Wednesday 12 April 23 20:26 BST (UK)
Much is being made of President Biden's Finnegan and Blewitt ancestors from Louth and Mayo, respectively.

But what of his other Irish ancestors, where did they hail from - anyone know? In particular, the Roches and Foxes?

Are we that bothered?  I'm sure it's recorded somewhere on Google or Wiki

Surprisingly not much on the other ancestors.

In the 1900 census, his grandfather Ambrose Joseph Finnegan is living in Scranton in the home of his uncle Peter Roche who indicates he was born in October 1855 in New York, with his parents having been born in Ireland.

The 1880 census has Peter, now noted as being born in 1855 in Pennsylvania with his wife and two young children in Scranton.  The name is spelled as Roach.

1870 Census has Peter, aged 14, living in Seneca, New York, also born in New York, at home with his older parents, Thomas Roche, a stone mason, aged 57, and Bridget, aged 53. Both born in Ireland.

In the 1860 Census, Thomas & Bridget are in Seneca, New York, aged 35 and 38 respectively, with daughter Catherine, aged 16, and Peter aged 5.  Census taker has indicated they were all born in Ireland (with the use of ditto marks).  Catherine goes on to marry a Finnegan.

In the 1855 NY State Census, there are several more children in Thomas & Bridget's family -- Patrick (12), Catherine (10), Daniel (8), James (6), Thomas (4), and Sarah (1). All but the youngest are noted as being born in Ireland with Sarah born in Onondaga, New York.

I found the baptism for one of the children, Daniel, in Taghmon, Ferns, Co. Wexford in October 1845, the son of Thomas Roche and Bridget Noonan.  A baptism in the same parish is found for the father Thomas in November 1812, the son of Patrick Roche and Maria Doyle.

Thank you, that is precisely what I was looking for. And also why I am interested!

Maggsie

My great grandfather Carlin was b around 1831 and was married in Ireland but was in England before 1861.
The link given is of no relevance.  I have long given up trying to find his parentage as neither his marriage or birth can be found due to the lack of Irish records for that period

according to
https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1203257/pres-joseph-r-biden-ancestor-table-in-american-ancestors
The [at that time] latest edition of American Ancestors provide a current table for President Biden. Here is the reference:

Bannerman, Alexander and Roberts, Gary Boyd. An Ancestor Table, as Currently Known, of President Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr. Boston, MA: American Ancestors, Vol. 21, No. 4., Winter 2021. Pages 28-31.

----------
americanancestors.org is a subscription site.  American Ancestors is the name of the magazine.
You might be able to purchase that back issue from them. The organization is The New England Historic and Genealogical Society.
Google "Gary Boyd Roberts" for his background and other publications. He's done most if not all the presidents, royal ancestors of early New England settlers, etc.

Not having American ancestors it is not a site that, at first glance, would appeal to me for my hard earned Euros.  Also, whatever about US records, I doubt Mr Roberts is all that familiar with Irish ones.

As it happens, President Biden is visiting the North Mayo Heritage Centre today.

When you say We, please do not include me in your one-sided comment.
Seems you have a chip on your shoulder regarding what's available to you in our irish records.

Have a good day!

Not being in Ireland does not mean I don't know where the President happens to be today.
I suggest you learn a little about Mr Roberts' work before you decide what he does and does not know about genealogy.

I'm sure Mr Roberts is a fine genealogist. But an expert on Irish sources, which can be, shall we say, challenging?

I'm also sure that many readers here are quite well aware that President Biden is in Ireland today. But how many are aware that he is actually visiting a Heritage Centre today? (i.e. family history research centre). Other readers may be interested to know that, even if you seem to find that information somehow insulting.

To make a personal connection.

President Biden's first visit today was to the Apparition Church at Knock Shrine in Co. Mayo.

One of the first to be miraculously cured there, in March 1880, was a great-grandfather of mine.

To return to my original query - apparently the White House released a five page genealogical chart as part of President Biden's state visit. I can't seem to find it online. Anyone had better luck?
