Hi all not been on here for a good while, but here goes.
I am looking for any information on John O'Brien c1817-1881, Catherine Murray born c1817 and Francis Smythe c1827-1917. John and Catherine are on my tree, my 3x great grand parents. But since my DNA results where I have a connection with them I am finding a Francis Smythe (no DNA connection) married to John O'Brien. John and Catherine married 2nd Dec 1837 and had my 2x great grandad in1838. They married in St Michans Dublin. I then found John married to Frances in 1868 in Harrogate Yorkshire.
What I need to know is, is the John married to Frances the same as the one married to Catherine as I have not bee able to find a record of Catherines death. Which I think is what happened for John to marry again. Any help is appriciated.

I am little confused...
John Dawson Brien, a barrister, of Castletown, Co Fermanagh, married Frances Smyth in 1868 in Harrogate, Yorkshire. He was a bachelor, so he had not been previously married.
I don't understand how you have linked him to your John O'Brien? How did your DNA results lead you to this?
Maybe it would be a good idea to go back to the beginning: I can see the marriage of John O'Brien and Catherine Murray in Dublin in 1837. What was the name of your great-grandfather, who was baptised in 1838? Did they have other children? Do you then believe they moved to England? Where did John die in 1881?

I would say this is your John and the John Dawson Brien are two different people

QueenoftheWest, yes it is confusing.
John Dawson Brien was the son of John Brien 1776-1856 and Charlotte Dawson 1799-1850, I have DNA matches with both of these.
I did go back to the start with my dad trying to sort it out. The child that John O'Brien and Catherine Murray had was Christopher O'Brien, born 1838. His daughter was Julia O'Brien born 1868, she married Patrick Byrne born 1868 who are the parents of my grandfather. Also I have noticed that the Brien name over the years changes from Brien to O'Brien.
It is the DNA results that have caused me the confusion.

Who did Christopher O’Brien marry?
Where was Julia born?
Are you saying that you have dna contacts to link you to John O’Brien and Catherine Murray but not John Dawson?
Perhaps someone has got the wrong person in their tree. :-\

Is this her - but the birth is 1865 not 1868 as you write.

I found this on hints on Ancestry. I have DNA links to Charlotte and her father Rev William Dawson (1746-1823), these showed up on my ThruLines. Have Ancestry made a big mistake?

I donkt know anything about Thru Lines but just found this from Ancestry.

Heywood, I am not having problems with Julia O'Brien she is my grandads mother and I have a copy of her marriage cert. Thank you for your help though. It is her grandfather that is causing the confusion.

Yes you are right Heywood about Thru Lines they are not accurate..Never go by hints on Ancestry without checking first for yourself ..I just ignore them ???

I realise that but I was hoping that you could work back by using records which include occupations, places etc.
John Dawson was a barrister and his marriage shows he was a bachelor so it seems safe to say he is not your ancestor.

Thanks again Heywood. The ThruLines may not be accurate and that is what I am trying to find out before I accept or dismiss. It is telling me there is 1 DNA match for Charlotte Dawson of 148 centimorgans. The same for her father Rev William Dawson.

I do research anything that comes up about my family tree, not adding until I know for sure. Have not been doing the family tree for a while because of circumstances. But have started it up again, so this is just one thing I need to get sorted. I do need to get the birth of John O'Brien and Cathrine Murray to sort this out once and for all. Which is why I have asked for help.

I would think the birth of their first son Christopher going by naming tradition would have been named after the father of John O' Brien
