Hi All
You have been so helpful in the past so I thought I'd see if you can shed any light on this for me.
My Great Aunt Elizabeth Ann Evans (also known as Lizzie-Ann or Lissie-Ann) died 1st March 1972. She was born Blaenporth January 1906
My dad was told she stepped out from behind a bus and unfortunately was run over. He was at uni at the time and remembers coming back home.
I'm trying to find a newspaper article about it or some information. I'm struggling to find newspapers around 1972 - is this because they are still in living memory of people?

Death was registered in June Qtr, deaths are normally registered within 5 days in England & Wales to allow burial etc, am sure it was no different in 1972. It is a legal requirement.
Maybe the accident was later than 1st March? Does not help with a newspaper report, but death cert may hold more info.

Thanks Cas
We know she was cremated & they buried the ashes on the 7th March 1972
The date of death is on her parents gravestone, where they put the ashes.
I wonder why the registered death is so much later - unless there was an inquest

The more recent the event the less likely to be available online when dealing with local papers.
Checked British Newspaper Archive/FindMypast for Cardiganshire newspapers (they include Welsh Gazette, Cambrian News, Aberystwyth Observer, Cardigan and Tivy-side Advertiser, Aberystwyth Times). They go up to 1951 as far as I can see.
Have you checked the catalogue for Cardiganshire Archives which might list their newspaper holdings? Highly unlikely to be online and would require a visit to plough thru' edition by edition, usually on microfilm.

thank you that is most helpful :)

Had a quick peep at the Catalogue. The Cardigan and Tivy-side advertiser covers 1866 to date. But it does include a rider " ... however, there may be gaps!!"

Can I ask an idiot question - do I need to contact them to get them to search for me ?

I have no idea what the Archives approach is to "look ups" on behalf of 3rd parties. I suspect newspaper look ups for 3rd parties are a "no-no". You need to check with them.
But to give you some idea, searching newspapers can be hugely time consuming. Unless, of course, you know the date of publication or date of death which narrows down the search area considerably. The death cert would provide this.
At the moment the time period is the June Qtr. 1972 as identified by Cas ie. 3mths of papers to work thru' page by page - unless you take a chance and ignore the sports pages to reduce the search load!! If it's a daily paper you are talking about 80 editions - the worst scenario. If a weekly it means 13 or so editions only - bliss.
