Hi, I am looking for help with information on arrival in Australia, marriage, children for
William HEMSLEY (bricklayer) not sure of birth date - I'm thinking around 1810-1820 going by daughters birth dates
Wife is Elizabeth (surname possibly SINCLAIR) - from info on death cert of daughter Mary - b1842-d1889 and daughter Jane (Hemsley/Ball/Donaldson)
There could possibly be more children, I have seen a marriage for a Joseph HEMSLEY that might fit but couldn't find birth details.
Hoping someone can help
Cheers

Dee Bee58, it would be easier for us to help you if you supplied more detailed information. Where did the family live? What documents do you have? Please give the detail written on them. How do you know William was a bricklayer?
William could be the convict arriving in 1827 on Prince Regent, (certificate of freedom in 1834) but there are a few with the same name.

Sorry, I don't have much to go on.
All I have are marriage and death certificates for his daughters.
I have daughter Jane's 2nd marriage to Richard Donaldson #3860 - Bendigo Vic - that states father is William Hemsley - Bricklayer and mother Elizabeth Sinclair.
Jane's death cert #1168 - Bendigo - Mother Anne Hemsley - Says Jane was born in Glebe NSW
Father William Hemsley - miner ??
Mary's death cert #6391 - Born in Glebe - died in Albury. Father William Hemsley - bricklayer
Mother Elizabeth ??? (unknown)
Family folklore says that William came out from Scotland and married Elizabeth ???? (unknown)
There is very little known about the family, so where he came from may not be correct.
I have previously seen another person listing his wife as Ann France (no reference to where they were from) but it doesn't line up with the documents I have mentioned above.
Hope that helps.

Sorry, attachments are too small to be viewed.
Link to the arrival of an Ann Sinclair in Nov 1838.
Obviously she had to be in Sydney before about 1841 when children were born.

Richard DONALDSON married Mary HEMSLEY and when she died he married her widowed sister Jane (BALL), is that correct?
Many of the records would be prior to civil registration so you are relying on church records which sometimes have not survived or have not been indexed.

This 1857 birth certificate will give a birthplace and place of marriage for both parents, as well as listing previous issue (sometimes just males and females, not by name).
The death certs for William and Ann should identify all of their children.

Thank you all for your help. :)
I think because it is before civil registration it is difficult to trace.
I appreciate what you have all found for me.

I will look into getting the 1857 birth certificate - I have searched but not been able to find death certs for William and Ann (or Elizabeth). Will keep looking.
Thanks for your help

I think this is another child of William and Ann HEMSLEY .....
Martha HEMSLEY married John WILSON in 1869 in Young NSW.
She died in 1935
Her obit mentions father William HEMSLEY and being born on Victorian goldfields

There is a death in 1895 in Blayney for an Ann Hemsley that might be worth investigating.
I believe the youngest son Thomas Hemsley lived in Blayney.

ADDED - also have a look at death of William Hemsley in 1896 in Blayney.

Definitely worth looking into. Thank you.

I have been trying for 2 years to establish the correct William Hemsley died 1896 at Blayney, had a wife Ann. Both ancestors are my 2 times great grandfather, one of their children Thomas born 1857 was one of six children(Martha1841?-1935, Mary Jane 1842-1889, Joseph 1843-1902,John 1849-1925,Thomas 1857-1925. On William’s wife Ann actual copy of death certificate the informant (son Thomas states his mother’s maiden name as Ann Sinker). When Joseph married Bridget Consodine in 1882 maybe 2nd marriage he states his mother’s name as Ann Sinclair. My conundrum is (and I note there have been many many visits to site ) William is a mystery, was he a convict , was his wife Ann Sinker a convict. Was William born on 4/8/1804 at Sharnford Leicestershire some 34 miles east of Birmingham. I hope someone has some correct answers, please.
