Title: Looking for family records in Hungary
Post by: Lucy327 on Tuesday 21 March 23 23:45 GMT (UK)
Hi all,
So the long road of ancestry and DNA has finally resulted in the name and date of birth of my paternal grandfather who came to England in approx 1956 from Baj in Hungary. However I can’t find any records related to him in Hungary or his immigration and entry to the UK. Anyone got any advice at all?
Thanks
Louise

Hello Louise,

Maybe the data your are looking for is still protected ( birth registers are available 110 year, marriage after 70 year ) in Hungary. What is the date of birth? Do you know if he was married in Hungary as well? Maybe that record is already available. For research in Hungary I normally use the familysearch page, the indexing is almost completed now, so it became much easier.

I speak hungarian, i can offer help in your research.

Zsuzsa

Welcome to Rootschat. I could help but it be appreciated if you can give the name of your ancestor.

Thank you so much for your reply - his death certificate (from UK) states that his date of birth was 9th March 1932, and name Istvan Bertalan. We’re fairly sure he was married in Hungary, I would guess this would have been around 1950 ish

i was trying to find any person with last name Bertalan in Baj ( a village close to Tata) but so far I was unsuccessful. As he was born in 1932, the register still wouldn't be public, neither would any marriage certificate in the 50s. Does the death certificate contain the name of his mother?

His probate index entry indicates he died in 1990 and his address was a caravan site in Scunthorpe suggesting perhaps they were travellers?  Wondering what religion they would have practiced?

Did he also marry in Scunthorpe in 1888?  Is this the same individual as your grandfather?

Thanks all, the timings would make sense as to why I can’t find anything then. We know abit about his life once he reached the UK, and yes the marriage in 1988 is him, but we’ve been told he had a large family in Hungary but don’t know any names sadly. Unfortunately no other names recorded on his death certificate

Also am I correct that Baj is close to Budapest? The name we were given was “Bay”, close to Budapest and a small farming town / village and Baj seemed to be the closest match to that

Does the 1988 marriage name his father?

That’s a good idea actually….. I’ve purchased the death cert but not the marriage one… will do that now!

Baj seems to be correct, it is next to Tata, but also close to Budapest, maybe 40 minutes drive. I have searched in an old forum which is closed now, back in 2008 someone mentioned tha he is from the Bertalan family in Baj, but relatives were from Biharugra. In the marriage registers till 1930 i did not find any Bertalan, nor in the old church books, so it is very probable that the family moved there from somewhere else. In Biharugra an in thst area the name is more common. They majority of the people there are protestants or baptists.
