Title: von DITTMER family...Germany to South Australia
Post by: turramurra on Sunday 19 March 23 23:30 GMT (UK)
The family of Francis Albert von Dittmer has origins in GERMANY.
Would anyone know where please?

Francis von Dittmer was born 19th June 1887 in Adelaide South Australia.
His father was Francis Christopher von Dittmer 1864-1920.
The next generation was Herman R.J. von Dittmer 1832-1897.

also does the small word "von " mean anything?

Many thanks,
Turramurra.

“von” in German means “from”, or “of”. So the family originally came “from Dittmer”.

Naturalisation papers for Hermann born 1832 give his native place as Prussia, Germany.

He arrived in 1857 on the ship “Peter Godeffroy”. Passenger list gives his residence as Uekermunde Prussia.

The image of Herman Rudolph Johann DITTMER's baptism is on Ancestry. I can't read it to verify the transcription, but it appears:

bap 8 May 1832 at Pommern, Szczecin, Germany, Father - Johann David DITTMER, mother - Beate Friederike DITTMER.

Actually ignore the above - there is a burial with the same details for 12 May 1832 (died 10 May 1832): Herman Rudolph Johann DITTMER, son of Johann DAVID DITTMER at Szczecin.

Did Herman von DITTMER marry Alice MANNIX in Mount Barker, SA on 6 Aug 1860? His father is named Ferdinand David von DITTMER (her's William MANNIX).

Nice obituary, though short on family detail

Other children mentioned in Herman's funeral description are Frank (presumably Francis), Richard and Oscar and two daughters.

Hi
am i getting this right?

Herman R.J. von Dittmer 1832-1897 emmigrated to Australia in 1857. (did he marry in Australia)?
He had a son, Francis Christopher von Dittmer, born in Australia 1864
He also had a son, Francis von Dittmer was born 19th June 1887 in Australia

so you are looking for birth and the ancestors of Hermann, right?

Dave

According to Genealogy SA, there are these births to a father Herman(n) (von) DITTMER.

1861 David William (Van DITMER)  Nairne    22/633
1862  Hermann              Nairne    24/236
1863  August                  Nairne            29/585
1865  Gustav                  Nairne            36/185
1870  Henry Julius DETTMER (father Hermann Heinrich DETTMER - Adelaide    84/199) -  :-\
(death for an Albert  DITTMER 1871 - Adelaide    40/427)
1872  Mary Josephine   Adelaide    109/207
1874  Theodor Joseph  Adelaide    135/157
1876  Arnold                   Adelaide    163/485
1877  Oswald (von DITTMAR)   Adelaide    188/204
1881  Catherine Wilhelmine  Adelaide    257/125
1885  Eva May               Morphett Vale    350/335
1890 Mary Alice Evelyn  Encounter Bay    467/243
1892  Herbert John        Strathalbyn    512/214
1895  Florence Elizabeth  Encounter Bay    561/154

Obviously some of these later children are probably grandchildren of Hermann and Alice (nee MANNIX). Son Hermann married in 1884, so I suspect the later 4 children are his.

There must also be some other births not found - as Sue says, Alice's obit mentions 10 children. John Leopold von DITTMER is described as the "5th son" in his marriage notices eg

He had a son, Francis Christopher von Dittmer, born in Australia 1864
He also had a son, Francis von Dittmer was born 19th June 1887 in Australia

Francis Albert von DITTMER born 1887 has father Francis von DITTMER  (Adelaide    398/129)

Herman R.J. von Dittmer 1832-1897 emmigrated to Australia in 1857. (did he marry in Australia)?

As reply #5 - "Did Herman von DITTMER marry Alice MANNIX in Mount Barker, SA on 6 Aug 1860? His father is named Ferdinand David von DITTMER (her's William MANNIX)."

I'm not sure where the middle names "R J" (Rudolph Johann?) come from. All the Australian records I have seen are simply Hermann von DITTMER (and variations). I suspect some people researching this family have spotted the 1831 baptism mentioned in reply #3 and have assumed this is same person, without seeing the burial for that infant in 1831.

Yes I agree with your observations Maddy. Lots of copying of incorrect information on the Ancestry trees.
You would think the place to give his full name would be his naturalisation papers - he gives only Hermann.
He was obviously a well-educated man. A Lieutenant in the army in Germany before he left, (was he running away from something?), and a lawyers clerk in Australia.
His marriage was in the Roman Catholic church (I think) - his wife may have been RC, but perhaps we was too.

Interesting item here - where he presents his views on various matters.
