Title: Re: LOOKUP OFFER for US Census Records
Post by: Floss on Monday 02 August 04 12:35 BST (UK)
Hi Megan

I'm looking for information about Charles McIntosh (various spellings).  He arrived Ellis Island 28th August 1910.  He was going to live with friends in Brooklyn.  He was born in 1886 in either Rutherglen or Hamilton, both near Glasgow Scotland.  He was single and a steel worker.
Any info would be gratefully appreciated

Many thanks
Fiona

I am looking for Charles McIntosh for you.  Sadly he arrived too late for the 1910 census so I must look for him in 1920.  It seems much of the Brooklyn census was done in April.  I will be searching for you!

I was wondering if you could help with with some of the early US Census records.  I am looking for two families :

Alonzo A. Ferris (born 1827 in NY), wife Elizabeth (born 1832 in NY) and their children Alonzo B. (born 1855) and Alice (born 1852). In 1855, they resided at 56 Roosevelt Street in Manhttan, NY. Alonzo worked as a shipcarpenter. I was hoping to find them in the 1860 and 1870 Census.  They stayed in NY either in Manhattan or Brooklyn (kings county).

The other family is John and Alice Perry. Both born in the UK.  They had a daughter Elizabeth botn in 1832 in NY, son George born in 1834 in NY, son Benjamin, and daughter Mary Alice.  They lived in Manahttan, NY.  I am looking for them in the 1840 or 1850 Census.
Thank you very much.  Let me know if I can help you at all.  I live in the US. ;D

Hi, Megan-
What a generous offer!!
Here are two names I need to have, when you get a minute...
Both are in Massachusetts
1860- Patrick Howe, b. Ireland, circa 1835 - may be listed as a machinist - any others in the home would be great.

1870 - Patrick Doherty, b. New Brunswick, Canada, circa 1840 - may have a wife, Mary - Probable occupation - boilermaker.

Thanks,
Ann

Hi Fiona
I am unable to locate your Charles on the 1920 US census in New York.  There are just too many other places he may have gone to search them all. :'(
Using McIntosh, and soundex, for all states, I did not find him either.
BTW, Ellis Island gives his age as 28 in 1910, so it seems his birth year is as variable as his name... :)
I tried.

Searched in Massachusetts for

Patrick Howe, b Ireland (1860 Massachusetts.) There are two listed, one age 40, the other age 74.

Patrick Doherty, b Canada (1870 Massachusetts.)  There are 64 listings, none born in Canada.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. :'(

Hi Charmaine,

I'm sorry to tell you that almost all of the 1890 census was destroyed by a fire.  Mostly it is not too helpful for anyone.  Only about 6000 names survived (or partially survived) the fire.  Most people have to look on further to the 1900 census.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help there.

Hello Megan,
Thankyou for the opportunity to contact you.   I have very little information to offer to you but if anything is possible to find, it would be great.

I am searching for William SOUTHAN.
The only info I have is from his son's death certificate which is as follows:

William Morgan SOUTHAN (son of William)
Born abt. 1850 in Boston, USA.
Mothers name - unknown.
Resided in New Zealand about 9 years.

William Morgan SOUTHAN left USA (date not known, but may have been  ABT. 1875)  to marry in NEW ZEALAND in 1876.
The father William does not seem to exist anywhere.
I reside in Australia.

Any help would be ver much appreciated.
Sincerely,   Annette

I have Florence Leanora NEWTON who emigrated to US before WW1 so hopefully would be on the 1920 census
I have been told she went to Spokane Washington, maybe as a teacher
She would be aged about 43 by the 1920 census
I havent been able to find her on the Ellis Island site....and even checked Titanics passenger list...hows that for desperate
many thanks

ladybird,

Do you know if Florence Newton ever married?  I only found a couple of Florence Newtons in the 1920 census but they do not match yours.  There are a few Florence's in Washington that were born in England and would be about the right age but of course their last names are not Newton, perhaps she married and is one of those?

Thanks, Megan
Ahhh now that might be a problem...I don't know if she married. As far as I know she was single when she left Uk, but she might have met someone in the years before the 1920 census.
I know that she was born in Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland in 1877. Does your census list place of birth or just UK
Drats, looks like I'm going to have to find her ship
thanks for your help anyway, if I do find a married name can I get back to you
Also any suggestions on where to find a marriage in USA...this is my first time :-) all my other people are UK
Title: Re: LOOKUP OFFER for US Census Records
Post by: MeganWilber on Saturday 04 September 04 15:33 BST (UK)
ladybird,

Unfortuntely usually the census only lists the country of birth.  Some went so far to put things like Ger. Germany or on a REALLY rare occassion they might get a bit more specific, but that might be for a dozen people in an entire census.  Probably people from strange places that were in the middle of change.

You are always welcome to get back to me if you find out more information.  I love helping where I can.  I love genealogy whether it is my family or someone elses, doesn't matter.

You can always go to www.vitalrec.com to try finding a marriage certificate for her.  I am not sure if they ship internationally but you can always find out.  Maybe a researcher in the US would be willing to help with that if you cannot request it yourself.

If you have a good hunch that she stayed around the Spokane Washington area you could always write to the County Clerk's office too for advice.  That would be Spokane County, Washington.  If you need I can look up address/phone number for you as well.

I do believe that most places charge a fee for looking and that the fee is none refundable whether they find it or not.

Another good place to get tips/ideas is at the following link...

http://www.usgenweb.org/

You might find some helpful information or someone to ask as well.

Hope something helps!

Megan

Hi Megan
Me back again sorry

Washington State Birth Index, Prior to 1910 - 1919
Parent: Albert Dixon
Name: Florence Eleanor Dixon
Location: Spokane City
Parent: Florence L Newton
Birth Date: 27 Jun 1910
Sex: f
Race: W
There was also a son Robert Eldred Dixon born 12 Apr 1916

I found these births in the Washington BMD's on Ancestry
It looks very hopeful. The names Eleanor and Robert both run in the family
Please can you check the relevant census for this family to see how old the Florence L Dixon (Newton) might be. By my reckoning she would have been about 33 when the daughter was born

many thanks

Hi Ladybird
Hope Megan doesn't mind my stepping in to help.

Found in 1910 census:

Washington, Spokane County.  Roll 1670, Book 1, 1-WD Spokane.Sheet 690/10a, Page 175a, ED 154

DIXON,

Florence, wife, F, W, 32, M1, married 7 years, mother to 1 child, 1 living, b England, to USA 1910

Laurence, son, M, W, 4, b Washington

and on to 1920 census

1920 US Census, Washington, Spokane County
Town of East Spokane, Roll T625_1940, Sheet 1390/10a, Page 10. ED 124. Taken 16 January, 1920.

DIXON
Albert, Head, M, 47, to USA 1880, Na 1885, b England
           Dairy Operator.  Parents b England

Florence, wife, M, 40, to USA 1902, Na 1905, b England
           Parents b England

Lawrence, son, S, 13, b Washington

Florence, dau, S, 10, b Washington

Robert, son, S, 3 ?/12, b Washington

Soooooo, the years of immigration change, as do the ages.  This is quite common on the census :'(
but it may help with naturalization records.  Also, it appears they married about 1902/3.

Kind regards,
Valerie

I'm 99% sure that this is my Florence L Newton. I don't know how big a town (city?) Spokane was in the early 1900's but there can't have been too many by that name born in UK
This is wonderful, my aunt will be be very pleased that Florence has been found as she's often wondered what became of her.

Spokane has always been a moderate sized city.  I've been there, I used to live very close to it (about 4-5 hour drive).  You're right that there probably not TOO many people with that name born in UK.  I know nowadays it has a population of almost 200,000.

Perhaps if you look about a bit more you might find more on her.  :)

Hi

Could sks do a US census look up for me for HENRY BRUTON christened 1819 Norton Juxta Kempsey, Worcester, England, so was either born end of 1818 or beginning of 1819. His father is definitely born in england, mother also probably born in england - she died before 1831 so he may not have know that.

i'm afraid i don't know if he was married (kids?). I'm not even sure when he left england for the US. His family did not go with him, and i can't find him on the free 1880 census on the LDS site. He was not living with his family in the 1851 census in england so perhaps was already in US.

He maybe in the new york area? So perhaps the 1860/1870 census may be the best bet.

sorry not much to go on  :-\

thanks in advance

Under "exact" spelling for US 1870, I found only one match.

William Southan, b Pennsylvania, age 18, living PA, Schuykill County, in Tamaqua.

BUT his father was John, age 53, b England.  Mother is Elizabeth, age 57, b PA.

Nothing comes close using the "soundex" method.

Hi Megan

I was interested in your mention of a Census Filler for the 1890 census and hope this may help me to trace my grandparents' marriage in New Jersey.  My grandfather emigrated first which I assume was pre 1890, my grandmother followed  and I believe they married during 1889/90 - their daughter Elizabeth was born 20 June 1891.

William James Hills  born 12 July 1862 in Cambridge, UK
I believe he worked for the Pennsylvania Railway

Elizabeth Pledger  born 21 December 1861 in Stoke-by-Clare, Suffolk, UK.

I do realise the 1890 NJ records are scant but any help would be much appreciated.   Thanks

forest,

All I found was this in the 1890 filler...

Morristown, New Jersey Directories 1887-88, 1890-91

Name: William Hills
Location 1: N Y
City: Morristown
State: NJ
Occupation: Merchant
Year: 1890-1891
Location 2: 167 Speedwell Ave.

Unfortunately the filler does not list families.  Only people working.  It is taken from directories from areas at around 1890.

Sorry I couldn't be more help there.

Hi Megan

Thanks for your efforts - I don't think my grandfather was
a merchant unfortunately - he was a railwayman before
leaving England and again after he returned, so I think
the Pennsylvania railway occupation is probably right.

Thanks anyway - I have now managed to place them both on emigrant ships at least, which is something.

Megan, I would be very grateful if you could check your lists for a William Knowles and Mary Knowles who travelled to the US in 1893. They should be accompanied by a four year old boy William Allen Knowles and maybe a younger child Thomas Knowles. I am led to believe that they ended up in Sugar Creek, Iowa. Mary had a baby girl in 1895  Martha Eliza Knowles. Mary died in 1902 during/after childbirth and William and remaining family then returned home to England. I am hoping that they will show on the 1900 census. Any help gratefullly appreciated.

Freeb any idea of what Joseph's middle name was?  No Wallis or Wallace listed in the census that fits the age of yours.  Perhaps he used his middle name?

eberg,

I am sorry to inform you but almost all of the 1890 US Federal Census was destroyed.  There are only some 6000 names left from the entire Census and I found no O'Brien's listed.  As for Peters or Pauls, again nothing that fit your relative.  Sorry and good luck.

Title: PASTERFIELD's & the USA

Megan or any of the other Angels (please excuse the use of the word "Angel" to the fella's)

It appears that you are one of the Angels of the Brits/Irish and also part of the fountain of knowledge for that side of the pond, can you assist in my quest :-

Jas (James) Pasterfield appears to be the forerunner of the Pasterfield's in the USA, is their any indication in any of the records of his place of birth? the name Pasterfield being of an Essex, England origin.
Today Pasterfield's are found in Australia (William emigrated 1854), Canada (Dunstan in the 1950's), Wales (via London), ALL ORIGINATED FROM THE SAME FAMILY THAT RESIDED IN THE INGRAVE/BRENTWOOD/WEALD areas of Essex and even today most still live in Essex, England, but the Pasterfield's  that elude me are the USA lot!
I note that the east coast has such place names as Essex!
Who was (Jas) James Pasterfield, was he English ? is there any indication in any of the records of how he or his parents arrived in the USA ?

Thanks for that, I have some of the info, including Caleb, but I didn't know he was part of the British invasion of Maryland. I was of the belief that Caleb was a son of Jas (James) of the 1790 Maryland census and that he was born in the USA ! the plot thickens.
I'm of the belief that Jas was English but proving it is the hard thing!
Thanks once again, any info is good info ;)

Thanks again, all info appreciated on the Pasterfield's of the USA (pre 1900)
James, Caleb, Philip, Ritta and Susan (all having been born around the 1780's/1790's) are according to my records, children of JAMES (who was his wife?)
this James (Jas) being the one in the 1790 census and mentioned in 1783. Was James (the elder) part of the British forces in the American War of Independence (1775 onwards), I don't know, but a possibility ?

Hello and thank you for the offer to do look ups.

I'm trying to find 3 people: Edwin Fletcher Foster from Halifax, England, aged about 36, who arrived at Ellis Island 17 May 1911 and went to 171 Linden St, Yonkers, NY.  Two years later his wife, Mary Ann Foster, aged 36 and their son, Harry Fletcher Foster, age 13 joined him.

If you could have a look at the 1920 census to see if you can find them I'd be most grateful.

Thanks

Hi Lindy

1920 US Census,

New York, Westchester County, Yonkers City, Ward 7

FOSTER
Edwin F, Head, Male, White, 43, married, arrived in USA 1911, PA, born England, both parents born England. Occupation: Moulder in Iron Foundry.

Mary A., wife, female, white, 42, married, arrived in USA 1911, PA, born England, both parents born England.

Young Harry is not in the home with them, and I have not found any listings that match his details (YET).

Hello again.  Can I request more look ups please?  Not sure if it will be possible however as I don't have any addresses to go on.

I'm trying to find James and Clara Dutton from Halifax in Yorkshire, England.  They may have emigrated to the US, but it's only guesswork as to when.  They disappear from UK records after the 1901 census when they were aged 26 and 29 respectively, but the Ellis Island site shows nothing relevant.

Also, if there are any records - from any census - showing the surname McDanielson I'd be grateful to know of them.

In particular, I've found a reference in the Galveston County births index 1938 to one Royston James McDanielson who is listed as the father of Elizabeth Frances McDanielson.  His wife is shown as Elizabeth Garrigan.  The Ellis Island site has no McDanielsons recorded so I assume Royston was an American citizen.

Many thanks for your time
Lindyboo

Title: Re: LOOKUP OFFER for US Census Records
Post by: grub on Friday 22 October 04 18:45 BST (UK)
Hi Lindy

Edwin and Mary Foster were living at 147 Linden Street (from previous post).

1930 US census, Texas, Galveston, Galveston
Roll 2335, ED 17

McDANIELSON
Royston James, Head, M, W, married age 29, born in England, came to USA in 1909, is Naturalized, occupation is Wharf Longshoreman.

Elba, Wife, F, W, married age 17, born in Italy, came to USA in 1909, is Naturalized.  No occupation

VALERIANI, Leda, daughter, F, W, 17, single, born Texas, occupation: insurance file clerk

VALERIANI, Gabriel, son, M, W, 11, single, born Texas, no occupation.

Street Address is 154 31st Street.

If the family came directly to Texas, it would not show up on the Ellis Island records.

So I took a look at 1920.....

1920 US Census
Texas, Galveston, Galveston
Roll T625_1806, Page 11B, ED 46

McDANIELSON
James, Head, M, W, 34, married, b England, both parents born England, occupation: Ship Carpenter.

Lina, Wife, F, W, 40, married, b Alabama, both parents born Alabama

LOGSTONE, Ben, Brother in law, 53??, single, born Alabama, both parents born Alabama, occupation: Wharf Laborer.

and he also shows up:

Texas, Galveston, Galveston
Fort San Jacinto
T625_1805, Page 1B, ED 169

McDANIELSON, James, married, 34, b England, to USA in 1909, naturalized in 1919.  Occupation: Soldier

Interesting, eh?

There are a couple of other McDanielsons that show up on the census search, none born England.

Regards,
Valerie

Hello Valerie

I've been doing some headscratching re the McDanielsons you found on the 1920/30 census records.

You found that James McDanielson appears twice on the 1920.  What do you think might be the likely reason for that?  I'm afraid I've no experience of US census records so I don't know if such entries would have been common.

Could I trouble you for another look up please?  If possible, could you have a look at the 1910 census and see if James and/or Royston appear on that one?

Finally, did you have any luck finding James and Clara Dutton (my posting of Friday 22nd Oct refers)?

Thanks again

Lindy

Title: Re: LOOKUP OFFER for US Census Records
Post by: grub on Tuesday 26 October 04 16:14 BST (UK)
Hi Lindy

Re: 1920 US census

One was taken on 10 January, where he was with his family.

The other in Fort San Jacinto was taken on 15 January.

It is quite likely that he could appear on both.

I have personally found a couple of my hubby's family in two different places for the same year.  Some travelled for work, etc, and I imagine the enumerator didn't ask if they had already been "censused."

1910 US census...have not found Royston James in any state.  This was indexed by head of household only, and he may have been staying with friends, or as a lodger, etc and his name would not appear on the index.

Re: James and Clara Dutton.

      Ancestry gives me:
      James (1910) - 105
                 (1920) - 87
                 (1930) - 171

and for Clara, 2 in 1910 (none of them her), 1 in 1920 (not her either) and 38 in 1930.

That was a country wide search. The place of birth was not always entered, and it would be of great value if you had any idea of where they may have settled.  It would help narrow down the search some.

Let me know :)
Valerie

(Wife Harriett born england)

Hello

Would like to take up your very kind offer of an American Census look up.

I only very recently discovered that my maternal grandfather's sister went to America early 1900's.

From my own research, I have found the following info:

Selena Lilley born c1885 probably in Larne, County Antrim

married on 18/06/1907 in Manhattan, New York to

Alexander Blair date and place of birth not known.

Selena's Parents were Alexander Lilley and Ann June/Jane? Lilley (maiden name unknown).

Alexander's parents were John Blair and Martha Mowhinny (?spelling).

I have nothing else and at moment, am not even sure if Selena's parents also went to America or if it was only her.

Anything you may find out would be very welcome.

Thanks in advance  :).

Cathy,
I did a bit of hunting and this is what I came up with.

The part of the image not here states that...The first two in the list were born in Germany as were their parents.. The children all were born in Ohio as were their parents??... Occupation of Peter and the oldest two boys were Farmer and farm laborer... younger children listed as At school... there was one more child listed on the next page.. Edward  5yrs May 1897...

If this isnt your family then I am at a loss to find them..
This family was listed as Fowsch at ancestry, but seemed to me to fit.. They stated wifes name as Vertie but it looked like Victoria to me..

Hope this is the one..

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,
I think you really have come up with the goods for me. this time. You have found my family despite the change of name! This is my first link to researching my Ggrandmother Clara Trausch (Fowsch) and her parents
You mention the first two in the list born in Germany that  the image is missing do they have the same Surnames? If so I would love to have this info too.

Many many thanks for your help

Cathy,

Your welcome am Glad I could help.. By the first two in the list I was refering to Peter and Victoria.. They were born in Germany as were their parents... The children were all born in Ohio and it said their parents were too.. that was the part that didnt make sense since their parents were shown on the same page as being both born in Germany....
When I saved the image I only saved the names and vital statistic part.. the places of birth didnt fit in the image area I could save..

Hi

I am trying to find Alfred James Hall born abt 1876 in Baddesley Warwick England.

Have been told a story that when my ggrandfather came to Australia one of his brothers came with him and the other one went to America.

From what i can determine it Alfred would have arrived in America after 1891. Do not know where he would be. I know it isn't much information but if you could have a look and see if you can find anything it would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Megan, Thank you for your very kind offer, Could you please look for my Gt grandfather:

William THEARLE he was born 1877 Kensington England. He arrived in America sept 1922.  He was living in Attlemont N.Y. in 1938 according to an obituary.
I have details of his brother Joseph THEARLE and his family in the 1930 Census but not William, any others you could add i would be greatful for.

Anything you could possibly find on William would be very helpful.

Hello Jean
I went to look further back to the 1900 US census for New Jersey and found:

State: New Jersey
County: Passaic
Township: Manchester
ED 88
Sheet 17B

BURRELL
Henry, Head, M, W, Born June 1872, Ireland, married for 6 years, came to USA in 1890, occupation: Card Cutter

Agnes, Wife, F, W, born Dec 1875, Scotland, married for 6 years, had 1 child, still living, to USA in 1880

Elizabeth, dau, F, W, born Oct 1896, New Jersey.

Interesting to note that in the same census, just a couple of pages away, was Henry BURRELL, age 73.  He is listed as father to Jennie GRAY, age 33 who was born in Ireland.  I can post more detail if he is of interest.

Regards,
Valerie

Hello,

I saw your very kind offer of help with searching the US Censuses.  If you could help it would be really great as I can't find out any more without census info.

My Great Uncle Gordon was born in 1904.  He left for the USA arriving through Ellis Island in 1921 aged 16.  His actual name was Arthur Gordon Trowbridge, known as Gordon, though I have seen him as "A Gordon Trowbridge" and "Arthur G Trowbridge".  I have found his Social Security Death details on the LDS site.  I also know that he was travelling to his Uncle's house in Ashtabula, Ohio.  His uncle was HW REAKES, (Herbert).

From Ancestry.com I can tell that there is only one reference to Arthur Gordon Trowbridge in the 1930 US census - A Gordon Trowbridge.  He is living in Portage county (state not visible (presume OHIO).  There is only one other Trowbridge in Portage county - Emma L Trowbridge.  I am therefore presuming that they are husband and wife.

The information that I can/can't see is as follows US 1930 Census:
Name:    A Gordon Trowbridge
Age:    25
Estimated birth year:    abt 1905
Birthplace:    England
Relation to head-of-house:    Head
Race:    White
Home in 1930:    Rootstown, Portage, Ohio
Occupation:    .
Education:    .
Military service:    .
Rent/home value:    .
Age at first marriage:    .
Parents' birthplace:    .
Owned a radio:    .
Image source:    Year: 1930; Census Place: Rootstown, Portage, Ohio; Roll: 1862; Page:  ; Enumeration District: 29; Image: 405.0.

I am really keen to see who else is in the household as, as far as we know he had no natural children but did adopt a boy that he called Sunny.

I found his uncle HW Reakes also on a ship manifest arriving in 1892 listed as 'resident'.  He was born about 1875.  I believe he died 30 July 1930.  I also know that his brother Ralph Arnold Reakes (known as either Ralph or Arnold) left f North Wootton , Somerset, England for Ohio in 1896.  I believe he lived until 1956.  I think he was in Trumbull Ohio in 1910

Any help that you could give me regarding any of these three men and their households would be fantastic.

Thank you in advance if you can help.

Eddie

Hi

This is a bit of a long shot as we don't have too much information:

Eliza Lillian Caroline (known as Lillian Caroline Eliza) JACKSON nee WOOLSTON(E) born 1893 Folkestone, Kent, England

Husband Ray E JACKSON (nationality unknown)

Daughter Mary Ellen JACKSON - dob unknown but presumably born in America as mother supposedly emigrated to USA c1919/1920.

Unfortunately we don't have any further info with regards state etc. and fully understand that there may well be too many entries to ascertain which is ours. ???

TIA

Hi there, thanks for the offer

Would it be possible to find my relative Ethel Chant who was born 1879 in Bickington, Devon, England.  She emmigrated to California about 1900 and I know of two children, William Chant (1907) and George Arthur Chant (1908) so a census entry for sometime after these dates would be wonderful. Her husband was Arthur Thomas Chant who died in the Great War in 1916.

Many Thanks

Hi Megan,

I would be really grateful if you could look up the following on the 1930 census.

I know they emigrated to the USA in 1927 (or thereabouts)but, the only problem is, is that I have no idea what the mothers name is! I know her daughter was called Rene (probably Irene) Morgan, I think she would have been about 7 or 8 in 1927, and that they moved there after my great uncle, Thomas, was killed in a motor cycle accident in Eastnor, Herefordshire.

I would appreciate any help you can give me on this!

Rebecca

Algernon Hudson, born 1855 in Southwark (St. George), Surrey, emigrated to USA between 1871 (when he appears in the UK census) and 1880 when he appears in the US census as follows:

Algernon HUDSON
    Male

  Other Information:
    Birth Year <1855>
    Birthplace ENG
    Age 25
    Occupation Clerk In Office
    Marital Status S <Single>
    Male

As far as I know, he remained in Colorado, never married, and died about 1921. I believe he went to Colorado for the benefit of the dry climate being an asthma sufferer.
I should be most grateful for any details of him in later Censuses - or information about the date and whereabouts of his death - but perhaps this should be a different topic.

I'm afraid I haven't a lot of info other than

William Rowland b London, Southwark,Surrey 1887 and brother George born same place 1889.
Emigrated to Illinois sometime after 1901.
I know that is pretty rubbish, but it's worth a try, and I am an eternal optimist with this family history stuff.

Hi Colin

Re: Albert BOWER

On the Ellis Island site, there is an Albert BOWER, age 26
(not 28) serving as an assistant cook (Manifest of Aliens Employed on Vessel as Members of Crew) on board the Aquitania, which arrived in New York 23 July 1921.

I took a look around the 1930 census, and this is the closest I could come.

Hi Valerie,
Thank you for your help. The Albert Bower that you mention on the Ellis Island site for 1921 may be the one I am looking for, if a ships cook then may not have emigrated to USA and therefore possibly not the Bowyer you subsequently found on the 1830 census.
I will look at both these optionse, I appreciate these leads.

Hi, I am still trying to find Thomas Naylor Lucas in the 1860 and possibly 1850 census. T N Lucas appears in 1870 &1880 census in Stateburg South Carolina (Thomas was a minister in the Episcopal Church) with his wife Sarah.

Thomas was born Charleston SC in 1816, Sarah born 1817 England. Incidentally I have found Thomas at some Episcopal Church conventions 1861-1864, possibly living North Carolina in 1861. Thomas & Sarah appear in the 1841 census in Melbourne Australia and may not have been in USA at time of 1850 and 1860 - but were there in 1861. (The period 1841-1861 is a blank).

Incidentally Sarah died 1884 and Rev Thomas N Lucas died 1886, both in South Carolina.

Any information that fills the gap 1841 - 1861 (1850 & 1860 census?)  greatly appreciated.

Hi Joanna

I'm not finding Agnes indexed on the 1910 census, as it is done by Head of Household.

However, on the 1920 it shows as follows:

1920 US Census
Massachusetts, Suffolk County, Boston
Precinct 6 Dorchester.
ED 443, Page 1B
3 January, 1920
Living at 22 Powell Street

O'CALLAHAN
Frank, Head, Male, White, 34, b MA, fa b Ireland, mo b Massachusetts.  Occupation: Shipper in Shipping Office

Agnes, Wife, female, white, 30, b Ireland, parents born Ireland.  To USA 1906, naturalized in 1911.  No occupation

Frank, son, male, white,2.5/12, b MA, fa b MA, mo b Ireland

This site should help you with naturalization records.
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/rg/guide/Massachusetts11.asp

I suspect both Agnes and Ellen arrived in Boston not New York and I'm not sure where one would find details of their passage.  Most on line is from earlier dates.

Valerie

1920 US census

ELLIS
Edward F., Head, male, white, 39, married, born MA, both parents born MA.  Occupaton: Laborer, Street Department

Mary E., Wife, female, white, 39, married, born Ireland, both parents born Ireland.  To USA 1894, naturalized in 1901.  No occupation.

If you follow the link I gave you in the message about Agnes, you could order also Mary Ellens naturalization records.

Quite often they include ship arrivals, etc.
Apart from that, I have no way of finding "their" arrivals.

Hello Grub

I wonder if you can help me. My great-grandmothers brothers emigrated to the States in the early part of last century. They may have been in their early teens. All the children were orphan's and after a stay at Barbardo's they went to an Foster mother in Sussex. The two girls stayed in this country and went into 'service'. The two boys went to the US.
They never came back to England, so they should...I hope...show up on census records.

We believe that they went to Illinois.

Their details are
William Rowland b London, Southwark,Surrey 1887
George Rowland born same place 1889.

Many Thanks

Hello Megan,

Would it be possible for a lookup for Galveston, Galveston County, Texas for,

William Powell, Head,  born Liverpool 1850
Sarah Powell, Wife,  born Staffordshire 1852
Florence Powell, Dau, born Warwickshire 1875
William Powell, son, born Warwickshire 1877

Sarah, Florence and Willie arrived in New York, Jan 1889 but I think their final destination was Galveston.

I realize that there is not much left of the 1890 census but it's worth a try.

I am new to rootschat but am hoping your kind offer will help. I have traced a great aunt to Ellis Island in 1909.   Jane Crawford, a cook, aged 24, Born Workington Cumbria about Jan/Feb/Mar 1885,  parents Irish, Last address, 61,Snowden street Middlesbrough: She arrived NewYork 20th November 1909, she gave no forwarding address other than final destination "Greenwich". She did not have any relatives or friends that we know of in America. However we do know that she married a William Hutchinson sometime after1909 and before 1926 when she returned for a short visit Middlesbrough, we believe she may have had 3 children, Charles, William, Anne. and that she possibly had a connection with 6920 South Anthony Avenue. Hi thanks for your kind offer. :)

Could you check the 1870 census for me.

I'm interested in Henry Woodiwiss, born 1832 Derbyshire, England. Also his wife Fanny, she was from Ireland. They would have a son with the Henry F Woodiwiss, born 1868 New York.

I assume they were in New York, as they have another child in 1873, the 1880 census for New York shows she was born in New York.

Mag, I have just discovered who my boyfriends grandfather was.  He left when his son was very young, under 9, and never was  mentioned by his wife again.  His name was JASPER C. EDWARDS.  Someone else found him in   1930 in WASHINGTON CO., TN., DISTRICT 4.  He was AGE 32 ((B) 1897/98).  He was then (m) to a MARY AGE 21 and they were then (M)  2 YEARS.  We don't have any record of him and my boyfriends grandmother ever getting divorced  and in 1930 she was living in Hartford,Ct and stated she was (m) on that census so maybe Jasper was a bigamist.  Could you see if you can find him in 1900 as a child w/parents and/or in 1910?  He was from TN. before he (m) Angelina Bazinet/Bassinett about 1918 in Ma. where their son Alfred Norman Edwards was (b) in June 1920.  Alfred was my boyfriends father.  You would probably find Jasper in Tn. in those years.  Also could you check 1920 census to find him w/ANGELINA EDWARDS (WIFE) around NEW BEDFORD,MA..?  I know I am asking you to look in several years census' and I don't want to put you out but it took me 2 years searching just to find his first name and I have spent 3 days on-line and can't find Anything else about him.  I am trying to see if he had more kids w/Mary 'cause if so They might still be alive and not even know Jasper was (m) and had a son before and I would like to introduce them to their nephew, my boyfriend Bob.  Or at least Bob might have cousins alive in TN..  Thank You Very Much.  I am in no great hurry as I know you have many look-ups to do, I just don't want to wait 2 more years.     Leagen

Hi Megan,
can I please take up your kind offer.

The family I am looking for were found on the 1880 Census at Buffalo, Erie, New York

Joseph Rowe married 28 Carpenter born England
Ellen Rowe     wife      29                           Ireland
Joseph Rowe  son        5                           Canada
Margaret         dau.      3                            Canada
Thursey           dau.      8 months               Canada

Family information states that Ellen had died by 1888 and Joseph had re-married. Also Thursey was possible named Thirza after her grandmother and not Thursey.
Hope that this is enough information for you.

Many thanks for your help

hi Megan -I would think you're inundated with requests - can I please add mine. My late mother had an aunt that emigrated to the USA. Her name was Maud Jefferies - Maud was born in 1887 in Bristol England and we think she must have gone anytime from 1910. I know she married a Russian Jew and that he was a doorman at the Waldorf Astoria in New York and that they either lived or had property on Long Island and that they lost money in the Wall St crash. I have a picture of them  on a roof top which I believe is in New York. I know of no other facts than that. I found a Maud Jefferies on the Ellis Island site but I know that isn't her. I know this is maybe looking for a needle in a haystack  - many thanks in anticipation.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I am looking for John Lockard Logan in the 1840, 1850, and 1860 censuses.   He was born in Scotland in 1833 - parents Robert Logan and Janet (Conning) Logan, both born in Scotland.  John L. Logan married Mary M. Ware in 1859 in Hortonia, Outagamie Co., Wisconsin and lived there until his death in 1907.  He may have been in Outagamie Co. before 1860 or perhaps elsewhere in Wisconsin.

Hi Megan -

If you can help find the VIGERS family in 1830, I would be really pleased ... but it may depend on when in the year the census was taken.

The information I have is -
John Vigers and Sarah Etheldreda (nee Aves) were married in London 20 March 1830.  They had a daughter, also called Sarah Etheldreda Vigers, born in New York 1833 - but returned to London and SEV was baptised there in 1834.  The mother may have died in the USA.  They may have had two other children b. in the USA between 1830-1832: John and Edward (b. Conn).

I wonder if it is possible the parents could be on the 1830 census in New York or Connecticut (sorry I don'y know any counties) - if it was done later in the year?

If not, any suggestions on other sources would be welcomed.

Thanks

Mike E

Megan, I thought I could give you a hand, your list is growing!

Dotty,

There are quite a few John Whiteheads in MA in the 1910 census, do you have an age? There are 8 in Bristol,

        WHITEHEAD    JOHN   83   M   W   ENGL   MA   BRISTOL    1-WD FALL RVR    1910

        WHITEHEAD    JOHN   27   M   W   ENGL   MA   BRISTOL    6-WD FALL RVR    1910

        WHITEHEAD    JOHN   34   M   W   MA   MA   BRISTOL    9-WD FALL RVR    1910

        WHITEHEAD    JOHN   64   M   W   ENGL   MA   BRISTOL    2-WD NEW BEDFORD    1910

        WHITEHEAD    JOHN   75   M   W   ENGL   MA   BRISTOL    1-WD NEW BEDFORD    1910

        WHITEHEAD    JOHN B   48   M   W   ENGL   MA   BRISTOL    4-WD NEW BEDFORD    1910

        WHITEHEAD    JOHN R   36   M   W   MA   MA   BRISTOL    8-WD TAUNTON    1910

        WHITEHEAD    JOHN W   35   M   W   ENGL   MA   BRISTOL    DIGHTON    1910

Ok, then Herbert Taylor and his wife Agnes are even harder to find as the only Herbert Taylor in the 1910 census of the right age was 28 yr old Herbert W Taylor, his wife Alice (27) and their daughters Gladys (4) & Phyllis (3) in Waterbury, New Haven CT

In Bristol co MA in the 1910 census gives us these Taylors from England of the appropriate age:

        TAYLOR    ARTHUR   28   M   W   ENGL   MA   BRISTOL    6-WD FALL RVR    1910

        TAYLOR    ERNEST   28   M   W   ENGL   MA   BRISTOL    5-WD FALL RVR    1910

        TAYLOR    FRED   27   M   W   ENGL   MA   BRISTOL    6-WD FALL RVR    1910

TAYLOR    JAMES   21   M   W   ENGL   MA   BRISTOL    SOMERSET    1910

        TAYLOR    JAMES   30   M   W   ENGL   MA   BRISTOL    1-WD FALL RVR    1910

        TAYLOR    JAMES   29   M   W   ENGL   MA   BRISTOL    1-WD FALL RVR    1910

        TAYLOR    JAMES   29   M   W   ENGL   MA   BRISTOL    2-WD NEW BEDFORD    1910

        TAYLOR    JOSEPH   30   M   W   ENGL   MA   BRISTOL    1-WD FALL RVR    1910

        TAYLOR    JOSEPH   27   M   W   ENGL   MA   BRISTOL    1-WD NEW BEDFORD    1910

        TAYLOR    ROFER   27   M   W   ENGL   MA   BRISTOL    6-WD NEW BEDFORD    1910

        TAYLOR    ROGER   29   M   W   ENGL   MA   BRISTOL    5-WD FALL RVR    1910

        TAYLOR    WRIGHT   25   M   W   ENGL   MA   BRISTOL    6-WD NEW BEDFORD    1910

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, let me know if you need any more of these guys, ok?

Hi Megan
My request is for NJ, which I realise might be a problem.  The names are:
WILLIAM HILLS, (Christened James William Hills) b. 12 July 1862 Cambridge, UK.  Arrival date in Philadelphia was 25 June 1889.  He worked for the Pennsylvania Railway as an overseer.

ELIZABETH HILLS (nee PLEDGER) b.21 Dec.1861 Stoke by Clare, Suffolk.  Arrival date in Philadelphia 9 Sept.1890  (too late for census?)

Only know that they lived somewhee in NJ.   Any inf.would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Thank you for offering to do look ups.  I'd be glad if you have time, to check for the following:

James McDonald (or variation – eg, McDonnell) born c1819 Ireland (Co Mayo)
Wife: Maria – age not known but younger than James
Alexander McDonald (brother of James) born c1825 Ireland (Co Mayo)

I'm afraid this is a somewhat vague search request, since I'm not sure if they emigrated, but it seems to be the most likely reason for their absence from UK records after 1842 – in the case of James and Maria – and 1851 in the case of Alexander.

They had no special trades when they lived in England.  Their residence in England was Bolton, Lancashire, so if they emigrated they would presumably have departed from the port of Liverpool.

On the LDS 1881 there are a few with the above names but I'm not sure.

Lindy

hi there Megan,

Thx for your kind offer, i'm looking for these people in GILLESPIE, MACOUPIN COUNTY, ILLINOIS.

JAMES GALLAGHER DOB APPROX 1874-1892.

His brother

OWEN GALLAGHER DOB SAME AS ABOVE.

I know they were born in Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanarkshire around this time, but not the exact years, I also do not know when they emigrated, I have the town they went to (Gillespie) from relations, but they are relying on memory, it may be wrong, one legend has James being voted the best dressed man in town, I think at around 1900-1930, as I say these are memories from childhood.
Their Parents were:

JAMES GALLAGHER DOB 1851

married Bridgeton, Glasgow,17 Jan 1873, to:

MARY QUINN DOB 1850

I understand there is not a lot of Info on these guy's, but anything you can find on them will be gratefully received.

Kind regards

Jim. Hendry

Hi Valerie,

Thanks for your quick reply, these two definatly look like the "Brother's Gallagher" of mine, now I have their ages I can search for their Birth Certs here in Scotland, they were brother's of my Grandmother, whose Birth cert I can't locate here, maybe I'll get a lead from where the brother's were born here in Scotland.

By the way I wonder if you could seach for the name of the local newspaper for Gillespie or Macoupin County, I'd like to see if James Gallagher is mentioned in it as the towns "best dressed man", if you can that is, I'm very grateful for the Info you have given me.

Thx for your help again.

Kind regards

Jim.

Hi Sue
There is a John Gatehouse, age 36 in Syracuse, NY on 1880 US census, available free through www.familysearch.org.

1900 US census shows:
Syracuse, Onondaga, NY
Gatehouse, John, Head, b Oct 1846, 53.Married for 19 years,
b England, parents born England,
to USA in 1870, is naturalized,
occupation: cartman.

Elizabeth, wife, b March 1853, 47,
b NY, parents born Germany
Mother to 1 child, child is living

Jessie, daugter, b April 1883, single, born New York

In 1910, the family is still in Syracuse, NY

John is now listed as 60, still says to USA in 1870
Elizabeth is 56

Jessie is married, surname given as BALER, age 26, married for 6 years, no children.

Can't yet see any of them on the 1920.

Hope this helps.

Hi can anybody see if they can find a marriage for

William Sacheus Morgan to Leolyn S Smith between 1900 and 1906, i think in was in Connecticut. Most likely year is 1904.

Also i have him in 1920 and 1930 censuses but not before.
But in the census it says he was first married when he was 26(1890/91) so could that be checked as well please.

He was born in Wales in 1864 and went to yale until 1895 I have him in Berkeley California in 1913 - 1960.

Thank you

Kev. ;D
