Title: Place in Dorset?
Post by: Stangat on Thursday 09 March 23 17:49 GMT (UK)
Good evening

Today I am returning to genealogy for the first time in a few years and have decided to look at the 1921 Census as a starting point.

Already I have come up with a question which I wonder if anyone could assist with. The person in question has written his place of birth but I can't work it out. I've tried lots of different possibilities to no avail. Other census from different years suggest he was born in Crewkerne or Broadwindsor. He disappears in the 18881 and 1891 so I was trying to find him via the 1921 using the new place of birth.

For info he was William Walter Warry b1858 ish.

I am attaching a copy of the entry below.

Thanks for any help

Regards

Stangat

Broadwinsor is in Dorset, Crewkerne is in Somerset.

In which Registration District was his birth registered?

The birth was registered in Beaminster RD, June q. 1858.

Crewkerne was in Chard R.D.

So, to be clear, you are looking for William Walter Warry, born 1858, in the 1881 and 1891 censuses?

Hi JenB

Basically, yes.

Due to work commitments etc a few years ago, I had to stop building the tree.

William was one of my brick walls at the time having tried allsorts of ideas. He eventually turned up in the 1901
in Narborough, Leics having married in Blaby in 1892.

I wondered if he was in the army or something but couldn't find him.

I was trying to use the new birth place in new searches rather than putting on members to search. However, if anyone had any ideas I'd be very grateful!

In the 1911 Census he gives pob as Centerford and I think that is what is on the 1921 Census spelt Sentifa.

Thanks, that seems to have legs although I can't find a Centerford either!

Oh well, back to the drawing board

Thanks All

The obvious thing is to order his birth certificate, you can get a pdf copy for £7, you have the reference. His mother’s surname was VINCENT

Think he was in Kettering, Northamptonshire in 1891. Bricklayer, single, Lodger. Walter Warry age 27 born Leicestershire. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:4L7S-HMM

But how is that going to help locate him in 1881 and 1891, which is the purpose of the enquiry?

I was totally unaware that you can get a PDF certificate for £7, a bit like the old days, so thanks for that!

I have decided to order his birth certificate which should tie down where he was born at least.

It may help with the search but probably not.

I remember checking various army sites with no luck so the only thing I can think of now is a mis-transcription etc

I have been going through possible miss transcriptions in the Genealogist website with no success, it is too late to do more tonight.

Having his confirmed birth place should give you some certainty.  He certainly knocked five years of his age in the later census, probably to laden the age gap between him and his wife.

In 1861 the family were living at a place called Stony Naps (parish of Broadwindsor).

You can see Stony Naps on this map. https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=15.6&lat=50.83325&lon=-2.86690&layers=6&b=1

Note that to its south-west is a place called Synderford, which is undoubtedly the 'Centerford' and 'Sentifa' given as his birthplace in 1911 and 1921

Thanks JenB, obviously you have a certain nack with names!

I've just looked on Google maps and there's virtually nothing there at all now.

It seems such an unlikely move from there to Blaby but he did it. One of the reasons for trying to find him as he moved there through the years!

Thanks again
