Title: POYSER brothers convicts to Tasmania.

Hi All,

I am looking for information on what might have happened to these two fellows after they received their Ticket of Leave.

Thomas and  William Poyser were sent to VDL (Tasmania) in 1824 aboard the Phoenix. By 1840 they had received their ticket of leave and in 1841 Thomas married Mary Ann Thomas in Hobart.

After that I can find no trace of them to complicate things William Poyser also used the alias William Waddingham.

Any help tracking down these 2 great great great uncles appreciated.

According to this record his alias was "William Waddington". Might be worth checking under that name.

I would recommend looking for mention of them in the newspapers.
For example, here is William Poyser mentioned in a Government Notice, as appointed to Keeper of the Pound in New Norfolk. march 1840

William received an Absolute pardon in 1842

They both received a conditional pardon in 1836 and as Neale1961 has mentioned their absolute pardons were in 1841 for William and 1842 for Thomas.  That meant that they could go wherever they wanted including returning to England.

Per newspaper reports of the court hearings and trial, Thomas Poyser (alias Murphy) was 36 in 1823. He had a wife Anne and his home was in Chingford, Essex. Anne had a brother Henry Poyser, a wheelwright. William Poyser alias Waddington was aged 50.

The newspaper reports may have got a bit garbled about the Poyser relationships. Per the censuses, Henry Poyser the wheelwright had a wife Ann(e). He was born in Bloore, Staffordshire circa 1790/1. Ann(e) was born in Derbyshire 1794/5. Perhaps these are your ancestors?

Thank you for those replies.

Some online trees had William and Thomas dying back in England.
I had ruled that out as a possibility however with the information provided I was a bit hasty doing so.

Henry and Ann Poyser are my ancestors.

Would anyone know if there were any Shipping records for passengers travelling back to England?
