Title: 1641/42 Westmorland Protestation Returns
Post by: Jeffrey on Wednesday 07 September 05 19:15 BST (UK)
Hi Deborah,

Please could you look up any Richardsons in the Cliburn or Morland areas in the Westmorland Protestation returns.

Thank you.

Morland protestation on 22 August 1641 and 6 March 1641/2:
Thomas Richardson (43rd name)
Robert Richardson   (47th name)
of approx 145 names.

There are no Richardsons in Cliburn.

Thank you Deborah.

Very interesting.
Do you know if all males had to sign (or not as the case may be) or just the ones owning land?

Also do you know anything about the Land Tax of 1700? Are there any records for Westmorland?

It was supposed to be  "all men" but in some places only men between 18 and 60 took the oath.  The ones who refused to take the oath were supposed to be listed and sometimes womens' names were included in this extra list.

There is no  recusant list for Morland and no statement of coverage.

There is a statement for Cliburn (oath taken on 9 March 1641/2):
"These are all that are within the parish of Cleburne and there is none within the said parish that did refuse it."

I don't know anything about the land tax of 1700.   The book I have does some population comparisons between the protestation returns and the hearth tax of 1671 (available at the PRO?).   I compare with the 1674 hearth tax which is online.

Hi Deborah,
Thank you for all the information.

I have the Hearth Tax for Westmorland & I see it lists Sleagill & Reagill seperate from Morland. I wonder if you could see if this is so in the Protestation index as my Richardsons came from Sleagill (It is in fact in Morland Parish). Thank you.

Would it also be possible to look up Hanson & Kersey in Colby (sometimes spelt Coulby or even Cowlby).

Thank you in anticipation.

I have the window tax for north Westmorland if I could do any looking up for you.

Regards.

The returns are not broken down to that level of detail (and only include East and West Wards) and I think are based on ecclesiastical districts.

I assume Crosby Ravensworth encompasses Reagill and the CR returns include several Richardsons but no way to tell which are from Reagill:
1st column
William Richardson churchwarden
Thomas Richardson churchwarden
John Richardson cunstable
William Richardson overseer of the poore
Lancelot Richardson
John Richardson
Rowland Richardson
2nd column
William Richardson
Thomas Richardson
Thomas Richardson

There are no Richardsons in returns from Shap or Little Stickland but there are some in Appleby (which might encompass Colby?).   Let me know if you want these details.

I have an interest in Richardsons in the CR and surrounding areas but I have not yet started investigating.   My husband is descended from Hannah Richardson who married John Salkeld in 1773.  I may ask for help when I get to her.

Hi Deborah,

Thanks again for all the information.

Would be grateful for the Appleby Protestation Returns. Yes Colby came in with Appleby St Lawrence. There are very few Kerseys & Hansons in the area so most of them will be some sort of ancestors.

Whilst looking for my Morland Richardsons I have come accross many from CR. I do not think I have an obvious link but there are so many in the area there may be links somwhere.

Besr Wishes

Sorry I didn't read your last request properly!

I cannot find any Kerseys in the returns.

There are Hansons in Orton and Boulton only.

In Orton, it is recorded whether the men marked or signed:
2nd column
George Hanson (marks)
5th column
James Hanson (marks)

and in the 3rd column there is a Roger with illegible surname.

And "maide by the men of the Townshipp of Boulton  from eighteen yeares to threescore":
John Hanson
Thomas Hanson

Deborah

Hi Deborah,
Thanks for all the information.

I think my Hanson ancestors are maybe from the Bolton ones.

My Kerseys seem very elusive as it is not a common name around the Westmorland area.

Judy

Hi Deborah,
Some time ago you helped with the Protestation returns for my Hanson's & kerseys.
I have found all the Hansons you mentioned and John Hanson from Bolton  is in my direct line.

I now know that the Kersey's were spelt in different ways. One which I hadn't thought of is "Casey".
So could I ask if you can check if there are any Casey's in Colby or the villages around in the returns.

Also would it be possible to see if there were any Hanson's in Dufton or Appleby.

Thank you
Judy

Would there be any mention of my Gibson family who lived in the village of Bolton. I would be most grateful to you for this information.
Many thanks.
