Title: James Simpson CHAPMAN
Post by: snowqueen on Saturday 25 February 23 15:49 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I have a James Simpson Chapman born c.1798 in Hull.  I can find his marriage and burial but not his baptism.  I think the family may have been nonconformist.  Does anyone have any advice where I can look for nonconformist baptisms at that time in Hull.

I can't throw any light on this baptism BUT it must be kept in mind that (as far as I am aware) disposal or otherwise of Non-Conformist records would be the responsibility of the particular church/chapel.  There was, I understand, no duty to submit records to a higher authority, unlike C of E churches who were under the jurisdiction of the Diocese - hence BT's available as well as parish records.

I see that his marriage in 1831 was by Licence - have you obtained a copy of the Bond and/or Allegation?

Hi,

No I don't have the bond but I know who he is because I have a newspaper notice of his marriage and his birth comes from age at death.

If they were married at St. Mary's Church, I would have thought that they would have lived in that parish and would have been baptised in the same church. St. Mary's Church is in Lowgate, Hull and is beautiful, it has been there since 14th century. I have attended a few weddings there. Plenty of images of it online.

Only John's burial

When and where did that take place.  If it was St Mary’s or Trinity then I would expect any baptism to have taken place there.  It is also possible that Mary returned to her parents parish to have her children baptised. Maybe they were not baptised

Thank you.  I'm still looking for the baptism of James Simpson Chapman which I think could possibly be non-conformist so probably not on line.
