Title: Information contained in a death certificate
Post by: amanda0901 on Thursday 16 February 23 15:09 GMT (UK)
Please could someone tell me if a married woman's death certificate from 1874 (in England) would contain her maiden name? My 4x great grandmother married twice - the second time in 1829 and I can't find any information about her life previous to this, apart from her children's births with my 4x great grandfather!

Thanks in advance  :)

I have a number of death certificates for my female ancestors, and they don't mention any maiden name.

ADDED:  These are all in England.

Headings:  When and where died.  Name and Surname.  Sex.  Age.  Occupation.  Cause of Death.  Signature, description and residence of informer.  When registered.  Signature of Registrar.

Ah:  just noticed that a 1970 death certificate has a space for "Maiden surname of woman who has married".   :-[  BUT not on a 1958 or 1961 certificate.

Birth Certificates of any children should mention her maiden name?

Change of format of English death certificates from 1 April 1969 to include

Date and place of birth
Maiden surname for married or widowed women

The GRO Indexes will also show Mother's Maiden Name on the childrens births.

Sorry, should have added that all her children were born pre-registration unfortunately! Thank you for the replies so far.

Have you got her in 1851, 1861 and 1871  census? If her birth place is consistent and relates to where she married in 1829, it may be an idea to research the witnesses at the marriage, it is possible one or both were related and could provide a clue to her maiden name.

I'm assuming that you have the baptism records for the children born pre-registration, and that none of them indicate the mother's maiden name!  :o

No, I'm sorry to say they were extremely unimaginative! Not one of the offspring even had a middle name  ::)

Thank you, that's a very good idea! She was born in very small village  according to the Census returns, and married for the second time in the nearest town, only about six or seven miles away.

Thank you again; it's much appreciated!

I'm not sure that we can help you further, since you appear to be more than reticent in disclosing anyone's name.  :'(

Good luck!

I don't know if this will work, but it might be worth a try.
I assume on the marriage record for her second marriage that her married surname is given, correct?

Did any man with that surname die in the area in the previous year or two?

Can you find his marriage record and does the first name of the bride match your ancestor's first name? Track the couple forward. Did the wife survive the date of your ancestor's second marriage? If so then it isn't her. Repeat the steps for the next man on the list with that surname who died recently. Etc.

Obviously, this will work better if some of the names are unusual.

-------
Are there step children in the household in 1851? What do you know about them?

I don't remember the information on an 1841 English census. Can you find her on it? Can you tell if there are children in the home who are too old for that marriage?

Can you find church baptism records - not the civil registrations that started in 1837 - the church records.
Who were the godparents?

Occasionally a newspaper announcement of a marriage may give some more information - sometimes brides are described as "daughter of ...", and sometimes "relict of ..." in which case you could try as oldohiohome suggests working backwards from a death of the previous spouse.

As BumbleB implies, if you give us a name we may be able to help more.  :)
