Title: Parish record
Post by: CJurkow on Wednesday 15 February 23 20:53 GMT (UK)
Hi, I'm looking for help with finding any records.  I have James Hurst born 1780 and Married to Sarah White St Mary The Virgin Nottingham 1805.   I can't go any further back for his parents.  Any help is appreciated.  Many thanks and regards.

Where did you get his birthyear from?

Do you have him on any census showing his birthplace?  Without knowing where he was born it would be impossible to establish his parentage

The only 1841 entry b 1780 was John Hurst - not James.  He does have a wife Sarah but she is only 38 so too young to have married 1805 unless it’s a second marriage.

There is a 1yr old son James - birth reg shows mmn Northidge

In the 1841 census, James Hurst is in Mansfield (which is where all his children were born). He is recorded as born in county. His age has been rounded to 60 (ie born abt 1781)
His death in Mansfield in 1850 records his age as 72 (ie born in 1778)

Thank you.  The 1841 info is the right one but this is where I've got to and no further back.  I'll keep going, its just a shame it seems to stop.  Thanks again.

There is also an 1841 census in Mansfield for a James Hurst, age 60 (rounded down from nearest 5)
He is a frame work knitter.

Possibly a widower, as a big jump down in ages to:
Mary Hurst   30
Thomas Hurst 20
Sarah Hurst  15
George Hurst  13
Selina Hurst  10
Henry Hurst  3  (GRO show illegitimate)

Census details:
Where born:    Nottinghamshire, England
Civil parish:    Mansfield       Hundred: Broxtow (North Division)
County/Island:    Nottinghamshire
Registration district:    Mansfield
Sub-registration district:    Mansfield
Piece:    859         Book: 6     Folio: 25  Page 10

What are the names of the children for your Mr. James?
We need an accurate starting point.  ;)

That is the same 1841 census already referred to in previous replies 3 and 4.

I wasn't sure which post   CJurkow was confirming, as two different '41s have been mentioned.

Just looking for clarification before I trudge the newspapers!   :)

Have you tried going sideways?

There is a Thomas Hurst and wife Alice (Ellen/Alley on other transcriptions) baptizing children at the same time in Mansfield a possible brother.

There is listing for a William Hurst who died 1801 for death duties he was a Hosier.
Does the record office have a will or inventory if he died intestate?

Another possibility is the Will of William Hurst 1700 of Mansfield he leaves everything to wife Elizabeth and his children no names given. Have you tried to find his children and work forward to see if a relationship exists?

Nottinghamshire Guardian 27 January 1853
At Mansfield on the 21st instant Mr. James Hurst aged 83

In case it may help in the future, the transcription for the above's burial record gives his address as "Whild Boar Lane".
