Hi,
I have a typed probate index record for a man who lived, in 1967, at 'Inverness Av Mount Roskill Auckland'.
I cannot find it on google maps. Do road names change or is it a very small road or does googlemaps just not recognise it?

hello - there is an Invermay Avenue in Mt Roskill - do you have any other information - have you found the person on the electoral roll? 8)

I saw that Invermay Avenue and did wonder about it. The probate record is very clearly typed, but it would not be the first one that manages to make a mess of the address.
However, I do have him, or someone with the same name, in 1963 at 26, Inverness Av, S2, in Auckland, Roskill. He has, possibly, the wrong wife - or he left her behind in England....

The lady at the same address in 1963, was his legal wife, as testified in the affidavit of Edwin John BIDDLECOMBE contained in the Probate documents for Florence Eveline BIDDLECOMBE. See following link >

Have you tried Google Street View ?? Select New Zealand > Auckland > Inverness Ave added (2) : following new information from kiwi-terrier that street name is most likely now "Invermay Ave"
Added : ... 26 Invermay Ave, Auckland can be accessed on Google"street view" ... looks to be an older style bungalow (painted white, with a tidy/stylish paling fence, overall neat appearance.)

Incidentally, the 1965 Probate record for wife Florence, also has the address as Inverness Avenue, Mt Roskill.
[ There is an "Inverness Road" in the suburb of Brown's Bay, Auckland, but this would seem unlikely given that "Mt. Roskill" is also given in the addresses for these people. ]

I keep on trying to enter that address, but googlemaps/uk refuses to recognise it and keeps sending me to Inverness Avenue, Hamilton East. Do you have a postcode/zipcode or similar?
OK - just saw update - how can Inverness Avenue be renamed in 1939 to Invermay Avenue if it shows as Inverness Avenue on ER's in 1960's?

Sorry, I am going to bed now, did not plan on putting a NZ request on here, and had not worked out the best time to do it.
I could put a link to where he was living on googlemaps in 1939, with English wife of 4 years, but it is up a farm track on Wiltshire/Hampshire border and no street view. 2 children born 1936 and 1939.

This is not to dispute your finding ... but there is the following odditity. :D ???
I just re-checked (NZ) electoral rolls using street name "Inverness Ave + Roskill" (without entering a surname).
Result was 7 pages of persons living at "Inverness Ave" - Roskill electoral roll between the years of 1941 and 1966.
[So the use of that street name seems to disappear after 1966 ... and in 1975 an "Inverness Ave" appears in Hamilton East (Waikato District) ]
???

added: Just another odd aspect (trivia really), ... Edwin's last wife* (the one after Florence E.), was listed as still living at 26 Inverness Ave in 1969 / 1972 / 1978 in which years it's now known as Eden electorate. ??? [* Haven't included her name here as can't find her death. ]

You will need to use > New Zealand in the title of a Google street view search.
The current Mount Roskill postcode is > 1041 :
[ Ignore "Inverness Avenue, Hamilton East" it's in an adjoining province. ]
According to the information first posted by "kiwi jeanie" ... and the later information given by "kiwi-terrier" from the Auckland Libraries Heritage Collection, the Mt Roskill street name "Inverness Avenue changed in June 1939 to "Invermay Avenue".
And despite the fact that the electoral rolls up to 1966 show persons (in Roskill electorate) still using the "Inverness" name, you should be guided by the Auckland Libraries Heritage Collection data.
So your Google street view search now needs to be ...
"New Zealand > Auckland > 26 Invermay Avenue"

Edwin John BIDDLECOMBE arrived in Sydney*, Australia on 24 May 1965. He had embarked on a flight from Auckland (NZ) and was in transit ... and stated he had "last stayed in N Z". He ticked the box denoting he was "widowed".
[ * This passenger card is in two parts - on the reverse it says "flight - first port of call "S" - which I take to mean as "Sydney". ]
Edit : [Have just amended my original post, as it appears this travel (probably to UK - will check for that), was following the death of his wife Florence in NZ.

Just as an interesting sidebar my friend lived next door at number 24 approx 15 years ago. It is a part of Auckland that was badly affected by the floods of two weeks ago :'(

There is a very good, clear, picture of number "26 Invermay Avenue" which can be obtained by using the Google street view search. I described the house in an earlier post ... and also zoomed in on it to make sure I had the correct place and street number. (May save you a trip ?? ;) )
I was going to add the "street view" link ... but I think they time-out after a little while ... so that's why I have given chempat the details on how to search on Google for it.

Thank-you for all the extra information, some of which I have. I am still curious to know why the street was renamed but that name was not used on ER's. I can find Invermay but was stubbornly still looking for an Inverness hiding somewhere. I will stop that for now. I do like street views because you can look to see how much the house has changed through the years, and also whether the same car is still in the drive - in some cases it has not moved in 10 years.
That travel information has the same birth date as his on 1939 register, so the correct man - Biddlecombe may be an unusual surname but there are a few around so it helps to make sure.
Just a related query - when I am looking for old streets in England I use an online 25" ordnance survey map of various years e.g. 1910 , 1941. Quite a few streets disappeared in the war and during urban clearance. Do any such maps exist for New Zealand?

There was a 1908 Auckland map which I had saved on my laptop but when I went to the link it said Auckland archives had taken a lot of their information offline to update. Someone more experienced may be able to locate it for you
