Hi i am searching for info and pictures of Mullaghbrack from the very early 1900s, wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction as i have been unable to find anything.
-
Do you have an historic map of the townland of Mullaghbrack?
Using the OSi National Townland and Historical Map Viewer.
Click 'Accept' and 'OK'. Click 'X' in the black band (if necessary). Then select the map in Basemap Gallery.
MapGenie 25 Inch for 1887-1913.

Thank you for replying.

If it helps gives you a sense of Mullaghbrack, in 1901 the census tells us there were 19 inhabited houses and a total population of 88. Griffiths Valuation tells us the townland was 326 acres in size.
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Leitrim/Mohill/Mullaghbrack/
The 1901 census also tells us that every adult in the townland was engaged in farming or agriculture, save for one cooper. Are there likely to be any photographs of the townland in the early 1900s? No, unless something significant happened there. It was just conventional agricultural land such as you might find anywhere in Ireland.

Thank you for this info its going to be hard to find the info etc i am looking for but i now know what way to proceed.
-
How do i get info of records for a school in Mullaghbrack Mohill 1890--1940.
I keep hitting a brick wall.
Thank you in advance.
-
There was no school in Mullaghbrack (according to Griffiths Valuation). Search the contemporaneous maps on Griffiths for the townlands adjacent to Mullaghbrack and you will see where there were schools. There was one in Creenagh for example. That wasn’t too far away.
Also if you search the 1901 census for Leitrim, with the DED of Mohill, and the occupation “teacher” you will find 12 teachers in the area. That also tells you where there were probably schools.
Surviving attendance records may be on Findmypast.

Many thanks for this its harder than i thought searching family history in Ireland,

Many thanks for this its harder than i thought searching family history in Ireland,
I am afraid it can be challenging at times. We don’t have quite the same range of records that other countries/jurisdictions do.
-
Also being farmers they dont seem to leave the same trails and i cant find any marriages for the children so double difficult but i will definately follow what i ahve been given and thank you .
-
If you post the details of the marriages or other events you are searching for, we can try and find them for you.
Mohill RC’s parish records start in 1836, so you will struggle to get back much earlier than that. Birth, death and RC marriage registration started in 1864.

No wonder all i can find is whats on the 1901 and 1911 census.
The surname is Carney and have looked before on here and nothing ever came of it such as marriages etc but will keep on looking.

No wonder all i can find is whats on the 1901 and 1911 census.
Fragments survive for 1821 – 1851 for some counties, as follows:
Antrim, 1851; Belfast city (one ward only), 1851; Cavan, 1821 and 1841; Cork, 1841; Dublin city (index to heads of household only), 1851; Fermanagh, 1821, 1841 and 1851; Galway, 1813 (numerical returns for Longford barony) and 1821; King’s County (Offaly), 1821; Londonderry (Derry), 1831 – 34; Meath, 1821; Waterford, 1841.
The original census returns for 1861 and 1871 were destroyed shortly after the censuses were taken.
Those for 1881 and 1891 were pulped during the First World War, probably because of the paper shortage.
The returns for 1821, 1831, 1841 and 1851 were, apart from a few survivals, notably for a few counties for 1821 and 1831, destroyed in 1922 in the fire at the Public Record Office at the beginning of the Civil War.

So is it Michael and Ellen's family you are looking for?
Here for example is their daughter's Rose's birth cert
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1891/02377/1887059.pdf
It's hard to help until we know what your looking for
-
Possibly her death in 1971
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1972/04109/4040629.pdf
If that is the correct family it's looks like Patrick and Mary didn't marry either.
Mary died 1973 (Newspaper) and Patrick in 1967

I've been looking at the same records:
Michael Carney’s marriage to Ellen Flynn in 1886:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1886/10828/5949603.pdf
Michael’s death in 1939. Informant was daughter Mary who evidently had not married.
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1939/04744/4270204.pdf
Ellen’s death in 1940 (informant Patrick):
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1940/04725/4263016.pdf
Patrick died in 1967. He never married.
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1967/04202/4073426.pdf
Francis died in 1927. He never married:

This may be Rose Ann’s death in 1971. She never married:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1972/04109/4040629.pdf
Michael junior died in 1912. He never married:

None of them married that i could find and noone seemed to know them except my father who lived with them at one time.
The Carney children were all single then as well the boys worked on the farm doesnt look like i can go farther unless i can find siblings of Michael senior.
Thank you all for so much info for me to go forward with.
-
Wow i cant believe all that info you found many thanks.

When Mary Carney died (18 Feb 1973) she was living in Coolbawn, formerly of Mullaghbrack and the admin of her estate was granted to Bridget McGovern the same name as the informant on Rose's death, she may be related.

Michael Carney (eldest) death in 1875:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1875/020621/7235193.pdf
There’s a widow Carney death in 1881. Informant is son John.
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1881/06448/4853199.pdf
This might be that John marrying in 1887:

If it is the right man, then this is the family in 1901 & 1911:

If you are trying to locate the farm, then it’s possible to do that using the Valuation Revision records in the Valuation Office in Dublin. (Not on-line yet so you need to go to the Valuation Office or contact them to see if they’ll help. There may be a fee). Those records will show the plot number in the townland, and you can then compare that with the plot numbers on the maps on the Griffiths Valuation site. (Your family weren’t listed there in 1857, so appear to have acquired the farm sometime later). You can switch between the 1870s map and a modern one, and it has a satellite view as well.
The 1911 census also gives you some information about the farm. Walls were brick or stone, roof was slate or tiles, there were 3 rooms and 4 windows at the front. There were 7 outbuildings: a stable, cowhouse, calf house, dairy, piggery, barn & a shed.
-
You have built me a lovely picture of the farm maybe someone has some photos somewhere so looking forward to my day of sitting doing the history etc many thanks, i live in Wales am in my 80s and hope to get a folder done for my great grandchildren.
