Hi All,
I am trying to make sense of a chancery document C/1/52/233 IMG 329 on Aalt 1475-80 or 1483-85. This document refers to the reversion of a messuage in Westgate Street Canterbury, held for life by Elys Rose, widow of William Rose. As far as I know, the property was inherited by William Rose of Broomfield, son of John Rose of Wye but the widow Elys was to be looked after during her life.
I believe that the John Rose of Wye and the husband William of Elyse Rose are brothers and that the William Rose of Broomfield is the nephew of Elys and William.
In the doc in the link, at the beginning of the fourth line, I think is written nephew? So part of the sentence would read: William Rose the nephew of the said widow Rose...

Does anyone agree with this?
Thanks in advance,
Gigi

The bill is brought by John Merley, of Westgate Street. Elys Rose, widow, holds a life interest in the freehold of a property in Westgate Street, which after her death was to revert to William Rose of Bromfield, tanner. But John Merley says he has bought the reversion off William Rose for 40 marks, paying him £11 upfront, with the balance to be paid off at the rate of 5 marks per year. But William Rose has withheld the papers setting out the details of the sale and agreement, meaning that John Merley cannot prove ownership in a court of law. So John is petitioning for William to be appear in Chancery to answer the case.
Notes
No relationships are stated on this page.
Elys Rose appears to be still living in the property.
1 mark = £13s. 4d (two thirds of £1)

Fascinating. And I hope that whatever the outcome, the Widow was allowed to remain in the property for the rest of her life!

Thanks very much!
There have been a number of legal shenanigans brought about by the Rose family going back generations!!!
It's a shame there are no relationships described in the docs, however, it is an interesting story!
Best regards

There may be a relationship on another page. This is just the Bill. There's also an Answer, Replication and Rejoinder, all on AALT, following immediately after the document you posted.
