Hi
I am trying to locate the source of a burial for an Elizabeth Underdown who died age 30 in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia in 1898. Her father was recorded as Robert and her mother as Elizabeth.
I wrote down the details as above however forgot to write down the source and have been trying to locate it since. I have checked Find a Grave, Billion Graves, Australian Cemeteries Index and Remembrance Parks with no success.
I know the details of Elizabeth's family so there is no need to post info relating to them. I am just trying to find out where I got this information from! I have obviously missed some resource somewhere. If you can help, it would be greatly appreciated.
Regards, Eramophla

Could it be this one in WA, but a Bendigo newspaper notice?

Thanks for that Matthew. No - this isn't the one I am looking for. I came across the same article myself previously. I really appreciate your efforts. I'm just kicking myself now that I forgot to write the source down.

HI, Checked TROVE for a Death Notice without success.

Thanks Canclam. The death notice you have added is for the woman who is potentially the mother of the Elizabeth I am looking for. Really appreciate your efforts.
-
I can't see any Elizabeth UNDERDOWN deaths in Victoria in (or around) 1898. :-\

This obituary for the Elizabeth UNDERDOWN who died in 1916 doesn't mention a daughter who pre-deceased her. :-\

-
No it doesn't Maddy, but she also had several other definitive children who had pre-deceased her and they are not mentioned in the article at all either.
I am beginning to wonder if I made an error in the information I wrote down as no source is appearing to support it. If anybody does find anything, please let me know, however I think I will need to ignore the information about the burial in 1898.

In Memorium.
Edit to clarify. This is for Robert BEAVIS and mentions his daughter Eliza who died in WA etc

Is this her birth?
Elizabeth Ann Underdown
Born 1861 Inglewood Vic
f. Robert
m. Elizabeth Ann (nee Brown)
Vic reg 17652/1861
M :)
ADD: mother's maiden name McBroom, Broom or Brown according to birth regs
-
No Matthew. That is a possible sister to her. The registration is actually for Mary Elizabeth Ann (even though registered only as Elizabeth Ann) who went by the name of 'Annie'. This family did very confusing things with names that has caused lots of complications, which is why I'm hoping to find the original burial source.

Hi
I had a look on Family Search , they have scans of the original burial register for Bendigo Cemetery
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSVT-Z714-9?i=549&cat=201328
I could not find the daughter Elizabeth Underdown, details of Robert's burial 15 Aug 1886 and Elizabeth 24.8.1916 are in the register.
She was mentioned 20.5.1879 in the Bendigo Advertiser https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/88212551?searchTerm=elizabeth%20underdown
maybe she married, I have had no luck finding a marriage

In summary
Eliza Ann BEAVIS born c 1860 Spring Gully or 1859 Parramatta NSW and died 1898 WA married
1. John James Miller McKINNON 1883
2. William Joshua UNDERDOWN 1896 Is this the Joshua mentioned in Elizabeth UNDERDOWN's obituary.
Erimophla - Would you be kind enough to post what information you have on the family. Every little bit helps.
-
I wondered too, but there is this early death, so I'm not sure.
UNDERDOWN Joshua George
Father Robert
Mother Elizabeth Ann (UK)
VICT
Aged 22 Months
3282/1861
OP seems certain the Robert BEAVIS family is not the same as the Robert UNDERDOWN family, though both appear in Bendigo.
I would be interested to understand what evidence eramophla has that the person she is seeking ever existed.
No birth, no death, and no other record to date.

A lot of what is being posted is information I already have on the family. These links summarise what I have:

What I am trying to establish is if there was another child born to this family in 1868 named Elizabeth. I had two pieces of evidence that established her existence. The first is an article from the Bendigo Advertiser dated 15/7/1868 in which mother Elizabeth was involved in the inquest into the death of a child (not hers) who she had been nursing. As she was nursing, it is likely that Elizabeth had her own infant that she was nursing at the time. I also had my own handwritten note that I copied from a source that stated an Elizabeth Underdown was buried in Bendigo in 1898, aged 30, the daughter of a Robert Underdown and Elizabeth. Unfortunately, I have misplaced the source that I located this from. It is this source that I have been trying to establish with my post.
I have tried all the usual locations to find it in Bendigo Cemetery records and newspaper articles to no avail. I was hoping that someone may be aware of some other or more obscure sources that I have overlooked and could potentially check to locate where I got this information from.
I hope this clarifies the situation for everyone.

You need to read the full digitised inquest into the death of Kate KANE whilst in the care of Mrs UNDERDOWN.
She was not breast fed, but fed on goat's milk.

So the woman was not lactating.

ADDING A snip from the inquest. "....Children like deceased who are not brought up on their mother's breast are more susceptible.......

Speculation:
Robert Underdown (father) had died in 1886 and his burial is recorded at Bendigo Cemetery, (Grave listing - BGO-MON-L7X-9989) The mother, Elizabeth was buried in the same grave in 1916. If that cemetery plot had been bought, it would seem possible that a child of theirs who died in 1889 in Bendigo may also have been buried in that grave and, as already stated there is no record of that happening. Someone else may be able to see if there is a way of searching Bendigo cemetery records by grave listing.
I note that one of the Wikitree links makes the comment:
Evidence that the child Elizabeth (born approximately 1868, died 1898) is a child of Robert and Elizabeth is given in The Bendigo Advertiser dated 15/7/1868. A servant at the local hotel gave birth to a baby girl called Kate Kane and the owners of the hotel decided to adopt the girl. They paid “Mrs Robert Underdown” 8s a week to nurse the child (which indicates that she had been nursing one of her own). but as we've seen (well found, Sue) the baby was fed on goat's milk. This Wikitree link doesn't show an Elizabeth b1868 in the list of children of Robert and Elizabeth, and has no reference for the death in 1898 while citing many other excellent references)
Perhaps an email to the author of the Wikitree information may help?

There is no death registration for this person on my resources or the Vic BDM online database.
On my resource I can search for a death in Victoria using just the given name, parents given names age and year. Nothing for an Eliza/Elizabeth in 1898 aged 30 years with parents Robert and Elizabeth.
In my opinion family history can only be researched using primary and secondary sources. You need to purchase a few certificates along the way to validate your research.
If this was my family and I suspected there was another child whose birth had not been registered, I would purchase the youngest child's birth certificate. This would record all previous children born to the parents including chn who had died. I do recall a long thread some years ago about quarterly returns from the Bendigo area which were not submitted to the Melbourne Registry. Perhaps make some enquiries to the one of the Bendigo history or genealogy societies.
I have researched as thoroughly as possible using my own resources and those available online. The only Eliza/Elizabeth UNDERDOWN death in 1898 in Vic, SA, WA, Qld, NSW and Tasmania with parents Robert (BEAVIS )and Elizabeth was in Western Australia however she was aged 38.
Eliza's second marriage was to William Joshua UNDERDOWN, son of Robert UNDERDOWN and Elizabeth McBROOM. He appears to be known to his family as Joshua.
-
Just adding also to my reply #17, I do notice the document makes no mention of any other infant (registered or not) in the household of Mr and Mrs UNDERDOWN in July 1868, around the time of the death of Kate KANE who was in in their care.

Before many resources were around and our old team were on rootschat ;D we researched some of this family. In 2008. Those were the days....co-operation and all messages acknowledged and appreciated. I even purchased Elizabeth UNDERDOWN'S 1916 death cert to help us sort out the family.
No Elizabeth/Eliza born c1868 either.

Adding - looking at the R'chat link provided by Cando it seems possible that the OP is the author of the Wiki information so my suggestion to make contact is a bit superfuous.
Goodness - (nothing to do with the Underdown family) this is just like old times!
