Title: Problem with Family Tree Maker
Post by: J.R.Ellam on Saturday 21 January 23 08:26 GMT (UK)
Hi

I am unable to link & sync my Family Tree Maker tree with Ancestry tree.

I have Family Tree Maker 17 & I was wondering if anyone else was having the same problem.

Regards
John

I think you will have to upgrade to the 2019 version to establish the link with Ancestry.

Think you are right.  I have just upgraded to 2019 from 2017 and noticed the sync feature from FTM to Ancestry on it.

I can't even sign into Ancestry via FTM 2017 anymore, let alone sync.  I've never had a problem before so I think it must be a problem with mackiev.  Wonder if its anything to do with them being based in Ukraine?

ADDED: Apparently its a recent problem & they're aware of it but can't give any timescale for a fix.  Only the latest version of FTM 2019 is unaffected.

I thought I would check if anyone else the same problem.

My Ancestry subscription is up for renewal & I was thinking of not renewing it but if FTM problem it is not there fault this time.

I had a similar problem a couple of months ago - couldn't get the login to ancestry. I contacted Mackiev and they solved it. I had an out of date graphics driver. I don't know why that caused the problem but updating the driver fixed it for me.

I suggest you contact Mackiev and get their help. They are very good. I don't think you need to upgrade to FTM2019. It should all work on FTM2017.

Martin, I seem to be having the same issue, not very IT savvy, what is the graphics driver and how do I update it? Thanks.

Hi

I went here :

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download-center/home.html

and assuming you have intel hardware you'll be able to update all your drivers.

I can't see why an out of date driver would cause the problem but in my case updating to the latest driver fixed the problem. Hopefully it'll help in your case as well.

Good luck

It looks like FMT have altered the software to get you to buy the upgrade.

I am thinking of changing to RootsMagic, cheaper then paying for the FMT upgrade.

Martin, I have a MAC OS so no updates are required. I have FTM 2019. Been in contact with Mackiev and they say it’s an issue with Ancestry and are in contact with them. I’ll just have to wait and see. Thanks for your help. Catherine

John

I use Roots Magic primarily to sync my Ancestry trees to my Laptop.

Roots Magic works well with the bonus of error checking tools like duplicates, floating branches/individuals (tree count feature) as well as checking dates are sequential ie baptism after birth etc.

Once corrected they can be sync’d back to Ancestry.

The Syncing is manual once you have downloaded the full tree and media and it can be a bit tedious if you leave it too long between updating Ancestry and syncing to Roots Magic.

Yes I have had a look at several programs & it seems Roots Magic syncs with more sites. It doesn't give you some of the gimmicks you don't use but it does what you need.

Just a matter of getting used to a new program.
