Title: John Mason (1780?) and Elizabeth Allan (1788?)
Post by: Caltha on Wednesday 18 January 23 16:50 GMT (UK)
These two in my family tree are creating a wee bit of a blockage! They all lived in Barony parish, Glasgow. I have them marrying on 2nd Feb 1817 and going on to have three children - Agnes (1820), John (1820) and Mary 1822. I can only find the birth record of Mary which refers to her mother as Bethia, although Mary's death certificate states her mother was Elizabeth. Elizabeth had a sister called Bethia, who was three years younger.
I have John and the three kids in the 1841, but no sign of Elizabeth.  I can't find any death certificate for John Mason or Elizabeth. I did find John in the 1851 Census, living with his daugher Mary (Carson) and family, but no sign of him after then.  I can find no sign of Elizabeth except for a couple of possible listings. However, nothing that I can pin my hat on to suggest any document then or afterwards that truly relates to her.
The Elizabeth Allan I have was born on 27 April 1788, to parents John Allan and Agnes Purdon.
Anyting that anyone can do to help find the ultimate death details of John and Elizabeth would be very helpful.  Im reaching a dead end.

JOHN MASON   MARRIED   ELISABETH ALLAN   02/02/1817   BARONY

I note the marriage on SP but no baptisms?

Sadly the only death records in Barony are 1805 to 1835, so if the died there before 1855 when statutory registration began you will not find a death.

Thats interesting Colin.  I had assumed, wrongly of course, that Scotlands People had all the Barony death records. That sounds possibly why I'm drawing a blank with them.

I think SP have all the extant pre-1855 death records for Barony. It's not a case of there being other death records somewhere else, but of the other records (if they ever existed) not having survived.

See the attached extract from https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/research/guides/old-parish-registers/list-of-old-parish-registers#Detailed%20list

Thanks Forfarian - so should these be on Scotlands People?  If so, my search goes on.

Yes, all these are on SP.

ColC is correct in saying that if they died between 1836 and 1854 in Barony, the death record, if there ever was one, appears not to have survived.

There is an earlier book that listed all the surviving OPRs, and stating whether they were held by the Registrar General or by the local registrar. See the attached extract. You can confirm that all the irems in the last column, held at that time by the local registrar, are now itemised in the previous extract, showing that they are all now held by the RG, and hence available on SP.

It is a bit of a puzzle and is on my direct line, so I'll keep pursuing until I'm certain its not available.

Good plan. You never know what might turn up in someone's attic or basement.
