Title: Toolan family
Post by: poppy234 on Tuesday 17 January 23 18:16 GMT (UK)
Searching for information on Toolan families in Roscommon around the 1830's. My grandmother was born Bridget Toolan in 1834 but I have absolutely no idea where in Roscommon that she was born or who her parents were. It's possible that my grandfather came from Drumshanbo.
 Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to Rootschat Poppy 234  :)

To really be able to help we need a bit more information.

What was Bridget's married name?
who did she marry, when & where?
When did she die and where?

What were the names of her children in birth order (the Irish had a traditional naming pattern) and if Bridget and her husband followed it it may give clues as to the names of her parents.

have you tracked any siblings of Bridget?

This is a good resource for BDM
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/

Early births will need looking at the Parish registers (some more legible than others)!

https://registers.nli.ie/

before doing this research on the registers we need to establish where Bridget was born.

On Griffiths Valuation 1858 for Co Roscommon there are these locations
Boyle, Kilglass & Elphin
and these names
Laurence, Francis, Patrick, Owen, Edward, Daniel TOOLAN.

Were any of Bridget's children named by any of the names above?

Hello,
Grandmother Toolan - County Roscommon - somewhere
Grandfather? - possibly Drumshanbo, Leitrim

Was Toolan Bridget’s birth name? Sorry, I see you have said that.
Do you have any marriage details?

Indexes (Ancestry) to Catholic baptisms which may be on this site https://registers.nli.ie/ show none in 1834 but some  1836/38/40.

Birth Name: Bridget Toolan
Born circa 1834-137
Somewhere in Roscommon

She married in Newcastle, England on 13-9-1865 - to - Martin McManus
who was also from Roscommon (I'm waiting on their marriage certificate
which will be posted in and around two weeks time.

I believe that Bridget died in 1914 in West Hartlepool, County Durham.

Hello.
Bridget Toolan married Martin McManus on 13-9-1865 in Newcastle England and
eventually moved down to West Hartlepool, County Durham.
(I should have said that these would be my great grandparents and I think Martin's father was
Domnick McManus. Not a spelling mistake on his name on my part.)

They both came from Roscommon and it's possible Bridget came from Kilronan and Martin from Drumshanbo.

I think Bridget died in 1914 in West Hartlepool.

My grandfather Martin (Named after his father) was born 1878 in Sunderland, moved to W/Hartlepiool
and settled in South Bank, Middlesbrough. NRY.
Any help at all would be a blessing as I'm not very good at this. So thank you in advance.

This is a link to Kilronan parish. You can see which records and years are available.
https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0145

Ancestry and Find my Past carry indexes which make searching easier otherwise it is a trawl through the records .

Looking at indexes, I can’t see any Toolan in Kilronan.

I can see some baptisms to Dominick McManus and Johanna/Jane Conlon (my translation of first names from Latin) and one to Dominick McManus and Catherine McShervin - years 1838 +/- 10 yrs in Kilronan  :-\
I can’t see one for Martin though.

Where do you have that information?

Drumshanbo records are much too late here

Here is one reference to a Dominick McManus around the right time in the Tithe Applotments records
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01s24/

Do you have Bridget’s father’s name from her marriage record?

Will be better for you to move forward once you have confirmation of fathers' names from that 1865 marriage for Martin and Bridget.

It does look likely that Martin's parents were Dominick and Jane doesn't it. From Censuses:

1861 www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M76Q-SZ4

Yes those children fit with the baptisms in Kilronan.

Added
It would have been better to post some information from the English census records too.

If you look at the Catholic records there is a gap 1829/1835 and it looks as though Martin was born within those years.

In case you don't have it, on the 1871 census, Martin is showing as Michael. The family are living at 23 Ann Street, West Hartlepool, Durham:

Michael Mc Manus 34 Iron Worker b. Ireland
Bridget Mc Manus 24 b. Ireland
Thomas Mc Manus 5 b. Sunderland
Mary Mc Manus 3 b. Hartlepool

They are straightforward to find thereafter on the censuses. Guessing you have their entries? If not, they are free to search and view indexes for on www.familysearch.org/en/ (you just need to register, which is free to do). Original images are available on the subscription sites of Ancestry and Find my Past (many libraries have access to one or the other for free).

It looks like there are a couple of listings for Bridgida Toolan in Roscommon

Bridgida Toolan baptised 17/05/1840
Mother Catherina
Father Patritu

Bridgida Toolan baptised 06/05/1849
Mother Bridgidae
Father Johnanis

It looks like the census details might be there with done slightly different spellings of the surname as well.
Mcmanns and McManis

Do you know what the mother's parents first names were??
