Title: Painting title or place (?) on back of oil painting...
Post by: TallPaul on Tuesday 17 January 23 11:56 GMT (UK)
This is not strictly genealogical in nature, but I know you folks are fantastic at deciphering old handwriting.

The label is on the back of an oil painting by James Edward Grace (1851-1908). It was exhibited in 1807 at the Dudley Gallery. At that time he was living at Bedford Park, Chiswick, but had lived in Milford, Surrey in the 1880s.

So far I've got:

Dudley oil
East [?]
James E Grace

I can't find anything which is a place or a meaningful title...  Here's hoping you can!

Many thanks
Paul

Just thought about the sun setting when describing the picture....It's not "Last Gleam"  perhaps...?

I think it is most likely as the down strokes on the other words have a strong slope to the left. There is no sign of such a mark on/around the tear or before it.

Easy Shean (a misspelled East Sheen) - quite local to Chiswick.

Thanks everyone.

I've decided that it is "Last Gleam".   Turns out that that is not a particularly original painting title for a pastoral sunset, but it is apt.

Cheers

I thought I'd try to find other examples of his handwriting, and luckily the only one I found has both a 'G' and an 'S' - 'G' in his name (written rather than signed) and 'S' in Surrey. The letter here is far more like the 'G' than the 'S'.

You can see what I found at the following link - scroll the thumbnails on the left to get to the bottom one, then click for a full size version:
